There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.
Attracting huge names in comedy, from Matt Berry, Stephen Merchant, James Corden and Joanna Scanlan, to the brilliant Gbemisola Ikumelo, Emer Kenny, Kerry Howard, and created by the writers behind People Just Do Nothing, Peep Show, Succession and more, here are some of the best darkly funny crime comedy series of recent years.

Ah, Ready Steady Cook – you were a product of simpler times. The BBC’s teatime TV cooking show saw two contestants bring along a bag of ingredients, team up with a celebrity chef, (becoming Team Green Pepper and Team Red Tomato) and spend 20 minutes transforming what they’d brought into a tasty dinner.
They only had a maximum budget of £5 (which these days would probably only stretch to half a cucumber and a pot noodle) so the dishes weren’t fancy – none of this nonsense about serving some daft gravy-with-notions and calling it a ‘jus’. No, the likes of Ainsley Harriott or Anthony Worrall Thompson usually just hastily assembled a lasagne, and then the audience voted for a winner – and by ‘vote’, we mean they lifted up a picture of a green pepper or a red tomato.

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

Finding Alice is a brilliant new series that begins on ITV this coming Sunday, and while featuring a host of treasured British talent, it was the show’s impressive newcomer we had the pleasure of speaking to, as we sat down to speak to the rising star Isabella Pappas.
We ask Pappas about her experience working with Keeley Hawes, and Nigel Havers, as well as Joanna Lumley, Gemma Jones and Kenneth Cranham (we told you it was treasured). She also comments on the incredible set, and her plans to watch the show, and if she feels a little like this period in her life is the quiet before the storm. She also talks about her childhood and whether acting is something she always wanted to do.
But that’s not to say she’s come completely out of the blue, as Pappas had an Olivier award nomination to her name.

The six-part series will narrate a Windrush-era story of two sisters, Leah and Chantrelle, and their Bible-loving acquaintance, Hosanna, as they leave the Caribbean to embark on a new life in Britain.
On arriving in Notting Hill, they quickly realize that London is not for them and flee to the Midlands, overcoming racism and integration issues to make a new home for themselves.

"You're not well... You don't even seem to realize that." IFC Midnight has revealed the first official trailer for a "psychological thriller rippling with suspense" titled Kindred, from filmmaker Joe Marcantonio. This one is skipping out on October entirely, and opening at the beginning of November this fall. Kindred follows vulnerable mother-to-be Charlotte, played by Tamara Lawrance, as she is taken in by her recently deceased boyfriend's mother and her step-son, who seem increasingly obsessed with her every move. Soon plagued by strange hallucinations, Charlotte's suspicions grow about Margaret and Thomas' intentions for her unborn child. The cast includes Fiona Shaw, Jack Lowden, Edward Holcroft, Chloe Pirrie, & Anton Lesser. This looks extra discomforting and intense, especially when all the weird things start happening in the second half of the trailer. Definitely worth a look. Here's the first official trailer for Joe Marcantonio's Kindred, direct from IFC's YouTube: When...

Pay-tv giant Sky and British broadcaster Channel 4 has struck a landmark content swap deal featuring Tim Roth-fronted drama Tin Star, Paul Abbott’s cop drama No Offence and live coverage of the F1 British Grand Prix.

British pay-tv heavyweight Sky and its free-to-air counterpart Channel 4 have struck a first-of-its-kind content-sharing deal, with an agreement that covers premium sports and drama. Pubcaster Channel 4 will show Sky’s Tim Roth revenge drama “Tin Star” and Formula 1 racing coverage. In return, Sky will show series from Channel 4’s international drama service Walter Presents, as well as the new season of the free-tv broadcaster’s police drama “No Offence.”
The unusual hookup comes as new kinds of partnership and pacts are being forged in response to the reshaping of the TV landscape by U.S. streamers. Pay-tv firms in Britain have already started bundling Netflix and Amazon, and free-tv broadcasters have been co-producing with the Faang companies. But the Sky-Channel 4 deal is the first time a pay-tv firm and pubcaster have shared high-end drama and premium sports in this way.

No offence intended to the first two Thor films – well, a little bit is intended to The Dark World – but Thor: Ragnarok is easily the best of the three movies to star the God of Thunder. Now that the threequel has been released in certain countries across the globe, we can safely say that it lives up to the hype surrounding it and delivers one of the most outright fun experiences you can have watching an McU film.
A big part of that success is its incredibly talented cast. Not only does it feature Chris Hemsworth on fine form – it’s probably his best Marvel performance to date – but he’s ably supported by the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson and, of course, Tom Hiddleston. After a week of drudgery at the theatres when we were coaxed into wading through a self-designed epic slush on war and love, it is such a welcome relief to go to the theatres just to have a unpretentious good time. No offence meant. None taken.
Come, unwind with Vidyut Jamwal as he cracks some serious bones and Fera codes, brings India’s wealth back into the country and saves civilization from catastrophe. All done in the vein of a comic book hero who forgot his cape in transit.
Okay, Jamwal is ambitious, And sorry to say, he can’t act. He can fight like a wild untamed beast, though. His reflexes in the action scenes, specially in the hand-to-hand combat with actor Thakur Anoop Singh at the climax on the rooftop of skyscraper, are to die for.

Over the years, the celebrity author has been involved in several goof ups and misappropriate comments but the latest one has ended up being a sorry statement! Recently, Shobha De tried to poke fun at a Mumbai Police constable who was on duty during the Bombay Municipal Corporation elections. In a reply, the Mumbai Police, which is highly popular for its witty banter on social media replied saying, “We love puns too but this one is totally misplaced. We expect better from responsible citizens like you.” The twitteratis were really happy with the response. Some citizens criticized De for fat-shaming the...

Right from its opening scene – where a suspect is chased under a bus and his head squashed like a jam doughnut – No Offence marked itself out as a gripping cop show like no other. The brainchild of Shameless’ Paul Abbott, it smashes together lightning-paced police drama with dark comedy and lashings of soap opera. At the centre is impulsive detective constable Dinah Kowalska, played by Elaine Cassidy, who we caught up with on the phone ahead of the second series beginning tonight (January 4th) on Channel 4. Key to No Offence’s success, she told us, was the Paul Abbott factor.
“It is like when you really like a band and you are waiting for their next album,” she said. “No Offence felt like his next album after Shameless, even though he has written films and stuff since. Paul’s writing is unique. It is just about three degrees left of reality.

He didn't add any caption with the picture and has yet to offer an explanation.

It's not that long ago that a sequel that did 65% of the original's business was deemed a success. Tell that to Spider-Man today...
When Tim Burton's Batman Returns was released in the summer of 1992, Warner Bros had high hopes. It was the follow-up to his 1989 Batman movie, which had shattered the record for a film's opening weekend at the Us box office (marking the first $40m+ opening on record in the States).
Batman went on to gross $251m at the American box office alone, and is credited as being a major stepping stone in the invention of the modern blockbuster (after the likes of Jaws and Star Wars). Hopes were not small for the sequel.
Even as late as the early 1990s, the main indicator of a film's commercial success lay in its American box office takings. By that kind of measure, this summer's Terminator: Genisys would have been...

No Offence actor Ben Tavassoli and The Mill's Mark Strepan will take on the lead roles of junior investigators Rash and Stefan.
Apparently, it'll be the first time that the Serious Fraud Office and police have worked together on screen, as the two are brought together by a link between two seemingly unrelated cases.
The crime-solving duo will come up against rich and powerful individuals, corporations and governments that are protected by an army of lawyers.
Anthony Horowitz said: "When I created a hero who was Polish/British and another who was Iranian/British, I never expected that we'd actually find the real thing but with Mark and Ben we've done exactly that.
"They really are the 'new blood' that the title promises and I'm confident that they're going to...

Following the defeat of Barry Allen’s arch-nemesis Eobard Thawne (a.k.a. Reverse Flash), Team Flash quickly turned their attention to the singularity swirling high above Central City, which fans last saw consuming everything in its path. Armed with the heart of a hero and the ability to move at super speeds, Barry charged into the eye of the singularity, but will he actually be able to save his city from impending doom? No offence to Arrow, but I think we all know which show is going to be better again this year, right? As a wrestling fan, I'm looking forward to seeing Adam "Edge" Copeland take on the role of Atom-Smasher, while Zoom being responsible for sending all these Earth-2 villains to Central City is a very interesting twist. What do you guys think? As always, share your thoughts and theories below.

Martin Campbell's Goldeneye rebooted James Bond, introduced Pierce Brosnan in the role, and proved to be a major hit. We take a look back...
This article contains spoilers for Goldeneye.
Goldeneye: a mostly triumphant return after an extended absence. Far from perfect but its flaws are overwhelmed by the sheer brio of the whole thing, especially once former Bond bestie Alec Trevelyan finally shows face. The reliance on gadgets is just about right (the exploding pen got a Skyfall namecheck) and the action is reliably entertaining. At least provided you can enjoy a tank chase through Moscow - which this writer certainly can. Probably the most loved of the Brosnan Bonds, although arguably Tomorrow Never Dies is a more coherent film (we'll be coming to that one next, of course). But this one had a lot riding on it. After six years it was do or die -...

Holly birthday, Happyoaks! Sorry, let's try that again. Happy birthday, Hollyoaks! That's better.
It's often written off as the runt of the soap litter, but we're rather affectionate towards Hollyoaks. Surprisingly, it's not only survived but is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this autumn. It now boasts 50 regulars and a faster pace than any other soap, but can you believe that Hollyoaks once focused on the adventures of only seven main characters?
Launching on Channel 4 in October 1995 with just one episode per week, Hollyoaks gradually earned a place in viewers' hearts as it followed the tangled lives and torrid loves of Kurt, Jambo, Louise, Maddie, Natasha, Dawn and Tony. So where are Chester's magnificent seven now?
Jeremy Edwards (Kurt)
Ex-model Jeremy Edwards' character Kurt Benson was Hollyoaks' original king of cool, known for his love of his motorbikes, music and the local ladies. Kurt eventually settled...

Ask anyone who’s been to their multiplex recently and they’ll tell you that 2015 is already one of the greatest times in recent years for action movies, with Mad Max: Fury Road, Furious 7 and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation earning as much in audience goodwill as they made at the box office.
Regardless of how the rest of the year turns out, the story of 2015 will cherish their memory while excluding movies about genetically engineered hitmen, CIA agents in the 1960s or anything that starred Jai Courtney. This is a good thing.
In too many previous years, drought conditions prevailed. The choice was between a remake, a film about a Caucasian superhero with problems or a sequel to a movie based on a toy line. No offence intended to the filmmakers, but every time a movie like Transformers: Revenge Of the Fallen makes money, an angel dies and falls from Heaven.
