Great Episode 1
stuartbell-116-48658724 September 2014
Great start to this series. Realistic (so far as I know) and really brings home to you more than just the difficulties of the situation. The soldiers are normal, ordinary guys learning their trade. They are highly efficient but show all the nerves, the horrors of the war, the humanity and frailties.

This is much more than just an action drama.

I thought it was really well thought out, scripted, produced, directed and acted. Maybe not for some of a delicate disposition in places but certainly absorbing throughout.

Beautifully chosen soundtrack used sparingly but effectively yet suitably understated. Particularly loved the use of Blue Angel by Antony and the Johnsons.

If the rest of the series continues at this standard this is going to become an increasingly popular drama.

This series is surprisingly good.
jonnithomas28 October 2014
I saw this series initially by chance and then made a point of watching it.

The acting is very solid and the characters are believable and quite likable. They are the sort of characters that you could genuinely meet down the pub or in Tesco. The military characters are quite realistic, ordinary people doing extraordinary work in sometimes boring and sometimes awful situations.

The lead actress is actually very good at making her character realistic and the series shows some of the 'fish out of water' perspective that a lot of service personnel suffer when they return to normal life. It doesn't try to glorify the situation of the characters or war at all.

I am pleasantly surprised at how good this series is a hope that there are more episodes to come.

Good pilot, but quickly went downhill with improbable romance
emuir-126 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As I joined up in 1959, I really enjoyed watching the pilot episode where the young girl from a very dysfunctional low class family joined the army on a whim. Many of the experiences mirrored my own, the pleasant recruiting sergeant laying on the charm - we got a ride to the railway station when going for our induction, but returning after signing on were told to make our own way to the station and carry our own bags! The big difference between then and now was that women were a separate branch and did not train for combat, so I was spared the route marches, extreme physical training, cross country runs, etc. and going to a war zone.

Where I felt that it stretched credulity was when Our Girl was sent to Afghanistan as the only woman in a crowd of men, even sleeping in the same tent as the men. Then to turn the show into a cliched romantic triangle soap opera killed it. For a disciplined married Sandhurst trained officer obviously from an upper class to fall for a rough working class East Londoner with an argumentative big mouth was a real stretch, setting aside the fact that he was breaking army rules and could have been court martialled. Putting a lone female into a close group such as they were is asking for trouble. the first time she disobeyed orders should have been her last.

Considering that Afghans do not hold women in high regard, and that they have been trying to throw out the invaders, Russian, Americans, British, etc. for 50 years, to send a woman soldier as part of the invasion force is highly offensive to them and like a red rag to a bull. Far from winning over the hearts and minds of the people, they are earning their hatred by trying to destroy their culture. Why not send male medics into supporting combat groups, and why was the woman sent alone.

Then there was the totally wrong romantic triangle. The private answering back to superior ranks and questioning the officer's love for her while they were inspecting a possible booby trap, her constant disobeying orders, Smurf having a meltdown at the checkpoint, the officer having a relationship with a low ranking private is totally prohibited and all three could have been court martialled.

If they had concentrated on the military aspects, dealing with the effects of returning home after the heightened excitement of military action, and laid off the soap opera, I would have made it to Season 2 and beyond. The portrayal of the woman as rule breaking maverick from the wrong side of the tracks who saves the team was just too PC for real.

"Band of Brothers" meets "The Simpsons"
bluefoxniner8 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Please...please...no matter what you thought of season 1 and the film...DON'T treat this too seriously.

Season 1 was easily the best, a good feel of 'military' with a cute little romance, touchy feely stuff thrown in. Mollie was so amiable and very likeable as the lead medic., as were her company.

Season 2 and onwards it sort of all falls apart in terms of grit or even attempted reason...don't get me wrong, Georgie, the new medic is hotter than the very depths of hell and absolutely gorgeous...but despite her smouldering good looks and decent acting skills, Michelle Keegan's role was pretty insulting. Jilted, she decides to Jilt someone else..she goes off mission endangering herself and her company whilst creating and managing several love triangles along the way...but it's ok..just please please please don't take it seriously. The acting is actually very good, the characters are likeable, the plots hysterical and completely over the top but it's OK..this is a FUN show and should be treated for what it is. The bad language is alarmingly frequent and pretty severe, which sort of clashes with it's love triangle type story lines, it could have been toned down without spoiling the flow of the show, but it's fairly clear the makers believed they were trying to give an authentic account of army life with a cartoon type script.

So..yes, it's pretty much "Band of Brothers meets The Simpsons"...but that doesn't make it top notch entertainment. Throughly enjoyable

Series 1 is excellent but 2 is just ok
brushwood_darren30 November 2019
I really enjoyed series 1 of Our Girl. The Pilot was excellent and I was glad they did a series. Ok some of it was a little far fetched but the action was brilliant. I personally felt they made a mistake not keeping Molly (Lacey Turner). Series 2 and onwards is ok, just not as good.

I wish I could pin this review at the top, the way these women deserve it. (admin?)
akicork15 December 2020
"Our Girl" is a dramatised, fictionalised conflation (and extension) of the exploits of the first two women to be awarded the Military Cross, Private Michelle Norris (RAMC) attached to The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, for her actions in Iraq, and AB Kate Nesbitt (RN), a Medical Assistant attached to 1 Rifles, 3 Commando Brigade, for her actions in Afghanistan. These selfless women deserve to have their actions memorialised and preserved for the respect of future generations: honour attaches to them and if the public is entertained at the same time, so much the better!

Stop at season 1
mikemcbride970169 January 2021
This rating is for season 1 only. Do yourself a favor and don't watch any further than that. They replace the main character, Molly, in season 2 and proceed to totally spit in her face later on. As far as I'm concerned "Our Girl" only has one season.

It's not the worst I have seen.
AndyMassard28 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This review does contain spoilers. As a member of a western military, there are a few things about this that does make me cringe. It is not the worst series I have seen and there are periods where the plot, characters, scenery, and action are quite good. 1. There is no way a Corporal would stand for back chat from a recruit. 2. There is no way they would be allowed their mobile phones by their bed during recruit training. 3. If I was the platoon commander I would have ditched her half way through episode two as she is a liability. Never do you just wander off on a patrol. Never do you allow local civilians to walk straight up to you, regardless of age. 4. Not one of them has any form of eye protection. As a veteran of Afghanistan you are issued with ballistic glasses with changeable lenses. Tinted for day, clear or yellow for night. Every time you step outside the wire, they are on. This does not include the ballistic goggles on your helmet. 5. The closest distance any reasonable soldier would be to a suicide vest is 100 to 200 meters. There is a cordon and everyone inside is evacuated. As for the lovers tiff in front of an IED, that's something else.

Good British TV
kevinmaclellan020 October 2014
I have been watching British TV over the past couple of years and came across this series by fluke. In North America we do not have anywhere near some of the good British series available. Perhaps the NA plots will add more character in the future but today we watch a series centered on a plot and we know it will end in usually a good way. That is not to say there is not some good NA TV because there are some super series available. The Brits add more depth with character and less with the plot and inane action of killing a dozen people every show. Anyway my wife is Brit and she likes the British shows so I am along for the ride.

And what a ride the show Our Girl offers. You should watch the prequel show to get set up properly. A girl from a neighborhood that places her in a dead end situation. Her family is not supportive of her wishes and she busts out on her own when she reaches 18 years of age. She dumps her male boyfriend who seemed positioned to dominate any female through actions and religion. Her lot is directed when she finds herself in front of a recruiting office. She is desperate not to follow her mother's demise of catering to a bum of a husband who looks to not work and scam welfare as means of living.

The story follows with the TV series and it is based on her mission to Afghanistan and becoming a medic with responsibility she would never have had in England. I hope to catch the full series and love to watch this girl grow as a human. It is well done with a good script and acting. The production is first rate and my wife loves it. Fluke or not, the series deserves full merit and should be an aspiring film to young people.

Jan. 2015:

I was checking IMDb to see when series will resume. I did not see any continuous series for 2015. Hope they can write enough material to expand it. Great series and deserves a longer run.

Interesting and heartfelt
bbewnylorac23 April 2015
This series is clunky in many ways. It's true that sometimes it comes across like an army recruitment ad. Sometimes the script, acting and plot are too clichéd and the English countryside is an unconvincing stand-in for Afghanistan. But it's fantastic to see a drama revolving around a young cockney woman, Molly Dawes, who in London has a pretty bleak and insular life with few options in the future, and so tries a different tack and joins the army. The army opens up her life, and while she's not sophisticated at all, she does go on a journey that holds your interest. Lacey Turner is very convincing as the, at first, tough London teenager who becomes a scared, out of her depth, bullied, but brave and determined soldier. Too often, British dramas depict cockney girls as tarty losers always at the pub. This series was made with a good heart and I'm enjoying it.

Insane bit of English drama!!!
maria-kav20 October 2014
Best British drama in a long time! Amazing realistic series. Please bring back a second series needs to be done! Love love loved it!!!! Lacey Turner best British actress of all time she needs awards for this... insane bit of acting from all the cast. The captain wow! He's just out of this world I think I need to marry him. We need to see what happens with molly and the captain so bring please back another series. I never write reviews but I went to the effort to sign up and write this. Lacey Turner has always been a favourite actress of mine anyway, however this is something else. It's right up her Street and she's got to have some balls to be one of the only female actresses on set. She fits in perfectly, the script and acting is so well written you believe you are in her life. One of a kind drama that makes you see what is going on with our troops. So inspirational and brings to light how truly amazing the army actually is!! Made me want to join and I've never even thought of it as a career. Excellent work from start to finish!!!!

Season One is great! Season Two? Meh...
Firestorhm7729 January 2020
I only saw the first two seasons as they were the only ones available through Amazon prime video at the time of this review.

I really enjoyed season one. Lacey Turner (who plays Molly Dawes) does a great job and is very believable. She is a very likable actress and brings her character to life throughout season one.

Season two, however, was not enjoyable to me for a couple reasons. First, it got away from the roots of the show and started to just get into this love triangle and used the military as a backdrop as opposed to season one where it was more military-themed.

Another reason I did not enjoy season two was the lead actress. Michelle Keegan (who plays Georgie Lane) just didn't seem to fit the role. Don't get me wrong, she's very attractive but maybe that's the problem. On screen, she comes across like a hot sorority girl and it did not seem relatable to the viewer in her role as a combat medic.

I cannot judge the series past seasons one and two. I would definitely, however, at least give season one a chance! Again, Lacey Turner does a fantastic job. So much to the point that I'm interested in seeing some of her other films.

That being said, my positive score of seven is mainly based on season one. If I were solely basing my score on season two, it would probably be a four.

What is going on with the series?????
mahirehman20 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching Our Girl when it first aired with Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, and it was a great piece of British Drama until watching last nights episode (Belize) where Captain James declares his 'feelings' for Michelle Keegan's character Georgie. Since the introduction of Michelle Keegan's character I can easily see a decrease in the ratings. Its obvious that the source of why the ratings are dropping is because the the writer is primarily focused on forcing or creating love-matches. The story is OUR GIRL not LOVE ISLAND, focus on the premise of the WAR ASPECTS and the consequences of war and how we can better people if we showed compassion and a chance for reformation. That was literally the foundation of the show. BBC GET YOURSELF A NEW WRITER!

Best drama of the year
Tickylou21 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I give our girl 10 out of 10 and for me it is the best series on TV this year. Our girl follows an Army medic called Molly Dawes as she find her feet after she completes her training and is sent out on tour to Afghanistan. Through out the series you follow Molly as she develops from a naive girl into an able Army medic.

The acting is superb through out from the whole cast, but especially from Lacy Turner, Ben Aldridge and Iwan Rheon. I found the series to be believable representation of Army life and took my respect for the army to a new level. Our girl makes you laugh, cry, shocks you and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I am hoping that the BBC will have a second series so we get to see Molly Dawes develop further.

Great series
hselwood16 June 2015
I LOVE this show. It is very believable and so well written. Normally my husband and I can't agree on a series we both like especially when it comes to anything military related. We both love this.

I don't think anybody who watches this series will be disappointed, it has the full range of emotions and covers everything you hope it will.

It is the perfect follow on from the one off BBC special from 2013, I just want to see more! If you haven't seen the special you really need to get your hands on it and watch it. The Our Girl series perfectly picks up where the special left off. Every week my husband and I watched this series we couldn't wait for the next weeks episode. I really hope they make a second season and hopefully more than 5 episodes!

An interesting drama!
fiore_warner6 March 2022
The war in Afghanistan touched the lives of so many people both in the UK and in the USA. It's difficult to present war in any fashion but in our girl they tried to show humanity and courage. As many people know the life of a medic in the battlefield is normally very short. This shows a little of what they had to experience.

Gritty War Drama
chiumt30 June 2019
A British drama. It is gritty and realistic. Acting was good. No corny dialogue. It is much better than what the title suggests. A good picture of what Afghanistan is like. Better than what a lot of Afghan war movie aspires to be.

Series One = 10 stars
svtcobra3313 December 2019
Series One is film making to perfection. Well, it's a character-development story, so we can excuse the lame combat scenes with actors forming a nice target while their guns are inadvertently pointing at each other. Molly Dawes is the underdog we all want to succeed, and this movie sets MD in a perfectly human situation: Loser BF, loser role models, she thinks she's smarter than she is (aren't we all guilty of this?) and she's an adult clinging to childhood.

As a Yank, I LOLed at the difference between British boot camp and the Hollywood DIs dressing down recruits. It's painful, though, to see a UK depiction of US Army officers. Tsk tsk.

Series One gives us real character growth, real drama, lots of tugs at the heart, and a scene where MD goes to a church in the last episode was perfection. The actress deserves something north of an Emmy. Series One, including the original movie, is absolutely excellent. I recommend that you watch it and then call this show "done".

Series Two casts MD away. The "more experienced" character is gorgeous and plays her part well, but who can get on board with "rich girl joins army"? The combat scenes are not well thought out, actually a little worse than series one. The story arch is forgettable and cliche. Series Two is an example of good production values mixed with "good looking perfect characters" without humanity. The boyfriend is just a face on an IPad. The officer has always been a friend. The "platoon" (squad?) is always off to the side being a bunch of noisy baboons when they're actually supposed to be Georgia's "family". This series is just two attractive guys with non-military haircuts who interact in stereotypical fashion with the pretty girl.

Blew my mind..
I've probbaly watched over 100 boxsets and all different programmes. But when I started watching 'Our Girl' I instantly fell in love. It's full of laughter, sadness & happiness.

I think all the actors and actresses are amazing and work extra hard. I honestly hands down recommend this to anyone. I've read a few reviews and I really don't agree with them saying it's "boring" or "predictable" this is NOT true. I know this isn't the biggest review but is the most honest in my opinion. Let's get this the attention that it does deserve. !

Going down hill
Chrispearce223 March 2020
In my opinion this is going down hill. On Nepal Tour episode 3 and it's turned into EastEnders with guns.

Script is poor "no live bogeys left" surely this is RAF slang. "We're buggin out" etc. Not much action as before and more a drama. Just my personal thoughts, I seem to be in the minority so give it a go.

Very Realistic
gartam-402779 August 2022
I felt that this was a very good series. It brought out in a very realistic way the emotions that our soldiers go through and the reality of the bond that grows between the members of a group of soldiers who depend on each other for their lives. I only got to watch the first two seasons but am looking forward to seeing more of this series.

The six stars were for season one!
andreainks26 April 2021
So disappointed that the cast was change, especially the lead, Lacy Turner. I realize she had other commitments but when I was looking for a show to stream it was her personality that caught my attention. She was cute and witty and the actors that played her family were great too. Ugh not even going to watch it anymore... how sad it started out so good!

Load of rubbish
david-hawkridge7 June 2019
Being ex services I try not to watch this type of drama, unfortunately I don't have sole domain over the remote, this load of rubbish re-enforces my decision to avoid it like the plague, the acting is wooden, the characters unbelievable, add to that the total lack of knowledge of how the military is run, the interaction between the officer ranks and lower ranks just would not happen, on top of that the military structure as depicted in this so called drama is so far off kilter its a joke. Thats it I can get back to my kindle while she who must be obeyed finishes watching what I hope is the last of what I hope is the last series

Series 1, Excellent. Series 2 and 3, not so much.
Davey-G23 May 2018
Series 1, Very well produced, and acted. Somewhat realistic scripting, and more than just a gung-ho action series.

Series 2 and 3, Michelle Keegan for too wooden, and far too many cleches.

Undoes the good work of series 1
