- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: How come you always had to be the wise one?
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Because you needed me to be.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: [visiting Gillian in the asylum] Let's just get something straight. Whatever you want, whatever you think I will do, that won't be possible, all right? You were very clever. You made a bargain. You saved your own neck, and that's more than other people can say. I'm not someone you should look to for help. I'm leaving here. Starting something new. I won't be back. You'll have your own room inside, that's been arranged. And if you get yourself out, there'll be money in a trust account. But that's all. Don't write me. Don't try to find me. Don't look for anything else. Do we understand each other?
- [Gillian says nothing]
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: [trembling voice] You want me on my knees? I won't do that. The past is past. Nothing can change it. What do you expect of me?
- Gillian Darmody: [absently] They're called ladybugs. But how can you tell which one's a lady?
- [Nucky frowns, confused; the matron appears in the doorway]
- Matron: Did you enjoy your visit?
- Gillian Darmody: Oh, yes.
- Matron: Nice to see old friends?
- [Gillian tried to stand up, but falls back in pain, holding her abdomen; Nucky realizes she's been given a hysterectomy]
- Gillian Darmody: I'm sorry. It's a bit tender.
- Matron: Dr. Cotton will give you something.
- Gillian Darmody: [offers her hand to Nucky] Would you be so kind?
- [Nucky uneasily takes Gillian's hand to help her up]
- Gillian Darmody: There's still graciousness in the world.
- [Gillian and the matron leave; Nucky stays behind, looking stunned]
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: I can't help you. Go back home.
- Joe Harper: I don't have one.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Then go find one. Make one. Or do without one. But don't take it out on everyone else.
- [puts a wad of bills into Joe's pocket]
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Coffee's a nickel. The rest I don't care about.
- Joe Harper: [scoffs] The answer to everything.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: No, just the best one I've got.
- [Joe takes out the cash, tears it up, and drops it to the ground]
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: [smirks] Okay, kid. You showed me.
- [puts a few coins on the counter to pay for the coffee]
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Good luck. You're gonna need it.
