Duke Kahanamoku (Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku), a native of Hawaii and a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming, moved to Newport Beach, California, to surf the Newport Harbor. Kahanamoku was the first inductee into into the Surfing Hall of Fame. While living in Newport Beach, Kahanamoku rescued eight men from a fishing vessel that capsized in heavy surf while attempting entry into the treacherous surf of the Newport Harbor.
