A couple of weeks earlier, when Netflix released a documentary film titled Skywalkers: A Love Story, many perceived it as an unnecessary and shameless presentation of an activity that literally involves made-up problems and overcoming them through illegal acts. This week’s documentary film, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, is almost a redemption by Netflix, as it tells the highly inspiring story of Lhakpa Sherpa, the woman to have summitted Mount Everest the most number of times. The film also deals with the extreme difficulties in her personal life, which she had to overcome before creating history in an overwhelming manner. Overall, Mountain Queen is an entertaining and rousing watch that definitely puts our small and relatively insignificant struggles into perspective.
Who is Lhakpa Sherpa?
While Mountain Queen begins with the protagonist and her team walking up to Everest Camp Four, also called The Death Zone, Lhakpa Sherpa’s story begins much earlier.

Lhakpa Sherpa holds the world’s record for most climbs of Mount Everest by a woman, having summited 10 times, but she has conquered more than mountains. Lucy Walker’s Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa includes dazzling footage of Lhakpa on Everest, sometimes in snow and ferocious wind. But this engaging, modest and fiercely determined woman’s life is the real point here. Her story captures the doggedness that made all those climbs possible, as she goes from childhood in a village in Nepal, where she was uneducated and illiterate, to success on the mountain while enduring years as a physically abused wife and mother before she managed to leave that marriage.
Walker takes an unintrusive approach to her subject, as she has done in previous films, including the Oscar-nominated Waste Land (2010), about making art out of a trash heap, and Blindsight (2006), about blind mountain climbers in Tibet. She...

In a big deal that closed in the days leading into this week’s Cannes market, Apple Original Films has landed worldwide rights to Tenzing, the new package we told you about last week starring Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe.
The question we asked today was whether the U.S. buyers would come to play for the Cannes market projects and we have an answer already.
Oscar-winning producer See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech) is producing Tenzing, about the inspirational life of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and his summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside fellow outsider New Zealander Edmund Hillary.
A search is underway to cast the lead role of Tenzing Norgay who will star alongside BAFTA-nominated Tom Hiddleston (Loki) as Sir Edmund Hillary and four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) as the English expedition leader, Colonel John Hunt.

“Tenzing,” a film about the true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 trek to the summit of Mount Everest alongside Edmund Hillary, has been snapped up by Apple Original Films.
Casting is underway for Tenzing while “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston is set to play New Zealand mountaineer Hillary.
Willem Dafoe (“Eternity’s Gate”) is expected to star as English expedition leader Colonel John Hunt.
Apple acquired the rights the project in what was described as a “competitive situation” as Cannes kicked off. It is one of the first major deals to come out of the market as it goes into Day 3.
“Tibetan born Tenzing Norgay, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, both outsiders on a British Expedition, defied insurmountable odds to achieve what was once thought impossible, reaching the summit of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest,” reads the logline. “After six previous attempts, Tenzing risked everything for one final venture.

Prestige indie banner See-Saw Films are lining up a biopic of Tenzing Norgay, the legendary Nepalese-Indian mountaineer who summited Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, becoming one of the first men to stand on the top of the world.
Variety has learned that “Tenzing” will star Tom Hiddleston as Hillary with Norgay’s casting yet to be unveiled. Willem Dafoe will also star in the film, which is being introduced to buyers at Cannes with Rocket Science launching sales.
The feature is being directed from Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedon, who comes with some solid experience in the mountaineering field having helmed the 2015 documentary “Sherpa.” Fellow Australian Luke Davies wrote the script.
Having landed numerous awards for “The Power of the Dog,” See-Saw Films has been relatively quiet on the feature front recently, with its TV output — particularly its hits “Slow Horses” and “Heartstopper” — getting much of the attention. However,...

Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to the documentary “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” out of the Toronto International Film Festival, TheWrap has learned. The sale comes on the heels of another high-profile pickup from Netflix, Anna Kendrick’s serial killer directorial debut “Woman of the Hour.”
The streamer will release the film in 2024.
Directed by Lucy Walker (“Of Night & Light”), the film tells the story of Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit and descend Mount Everest who is now a single mom working at a Connecticut Whole Foods.
“Lhakpa grew up in Nepal, illiterate and rejected by her family, and emigrated to the US without speaking English,” the official synopsis from TIFF reads. “When we meet her, she’s working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods in Connecticut, raising her teenage daughters, Sunny and Shiny, in a small apartment. She’s a single mom and spousal-abuse survivor.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to the documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa out of the Toronto Film Festival, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
The deal is the second in quick succession for the streamer, which less than 12 hours ago snapped up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of The Hour, for $11 million. No details as to the financial terms were disclosed.
Pic’s subject, Lhakpa Sherpa, was the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. For anyone else, that might be the greatest challenge and achievement of their life. But for the unforgettable Lhakpa — now a single mother of three, based in Connecticut — it was just the start.
Hailing from Sk Global Entertainment, Obb Pictures, and Avocados and Coconuts, the doc was directed by Lucy Walker, the 2x Oscar nominee previously at TIFF with another tale of a female Everest climber in 2006’s Cinema Eye Honors Award-nominated Blindsight.

Eliza Kubarska’s documentary follows the plight of the Nepalis expected to take huge risks to aid western leisure pursuits
Like Jennifer Peedom’s 2015 film, Sherpa, this climbing documentary is more interested in the Nepali ethnic group than the westerners who hire them – chipping away at the stereotype of Sherpas as smiling, uncomplaining helpers. The director is climber and documentary-maker Eliza Kubarska whose film follows Ngada, who has eight Everest ascents under his belt. He is agonising about whether to guide a trio of experienced climbers – two Russians and a Pole – on an expedition to the unclimbed eastern face of Kumbhakarna, a more dangerous and difficult climb than Everest.
The reason Ngada is willing to risk it is that his 16-year-old son, Dawa, is a gifted student who dreams of becoming a doctor, but there is no money to pay for his education. Some of the scenes in the family’s home feel staged,...

The local industry has greeted both moves with relief.
In a move welcomed with relief by the industry, the Australian government has passed legislation boosting the funding it provides for local television drama and dropping a series of changes that would have added to the difficulty of financing, in particular, low-budget features and documentaries.
The changes confirmed this week mostly relate to the Producer Offset (Po), a tax rebate for local production and for official co-productions between Australia and other countries. The rebate is now worth 30% up from 20% for TV drama, while the rebate for features stays at 40%. It had...

Not to be confused with a similarly titled sci-fi suspense film that squeaked into release in July, this River, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, is a visually majestic, significantly airborne journey over a wide variety of rivers around the world. It is, on a moment-to-moment basis, stunning to behold, and there are ecological messages to be received by the receptive. At the same time, a little of this can go a long way, and there is a level of pretension that will be indulged by some and not by others.
Rivers, the narration aptly points out, are the veins of the world, the source of life without which human, animal and plant life would quickly expire. Visually, Jennifer Peedom’s film is a spectacular display of, and tribute to, the rushing waters that feed the planet. The uncredited cinematography, much of it in slow-motion, is uniformly magnificent, as...

The Willem Dafoe-narrated documentary “River,” from “Sherpa” director Jennifer Peedom, has unveiled its first trailer.
Produced by Stranger Than Fiction and Arrow Pictures, “River” is an exploration of the timeless relationship between humanity and rivers. Billed as an orchestral concert film, the doc is an ode to the natural word and a retelling of the history of both rivers and human civilization.
“When the first rains fell, the Earth awakened,” reads Dafoe in the moving trailer, which features stunning footage of river systems around the world. “Where rivers wandered, life could flourish. They have shaped us as a species and we worship them as gods. Today, there is scarcely a river unspanned, undammed or undiverted. Director Jennifer Peedom is set to re-team with her Mountain collaborators, the Australia Chamber Orchestra’s (Aco) Richard Tognetti and writer Robert Macfarlane, on new a theatrical documentary, River.
Co-commissioned by the ABC and BBC Arts, the project is a partnership between Stranger Than Fiction Films and the UK’s Arrow Pictures which will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and explore the relationship between humans and rivers.
Set to span six continents and boast “extraordinary contemporary cinematography”, including satellite filming, the film promises to show rivers on scales and from perspectives never seen before.
“As Mountain drew its audience up to the highest world’s most formidable summits, so River will draw its audiences in to explore the arteries of the planet,” Peedom said.
“This is not a traditional theatrical documentary. The phenomenal global success of Mountain shows that audiences worldwide have a huge appetite for a different kind of experience.

In 2017, mountaineer Chris Bombardier became the first person with hemophilia to scale Mount Everest. “Bombardier Blood,” bowing on demand Aug. 17, captures the remarkable journey in which he attempts to complete his goal of climbing the Seven Summits — the highest mountain on each continent — while raising awareness of the blood disorder.
The film’s shoestring budget of $200,000 meant the production couldn’t bankroll an entire team to make the climb to the top, so Rob Bradford and Joshua Sterling Bragg, the DPs for writer-director Patrick James Lynch’s documentary, knew they would need to entrust Bombardier, a novice with a lens, to handle the camera for the toughest part of the shoot.
Bragg compiled a “cinematography bible” that considered what kind of shots to use on which part of the mountain. He turned to the matter-of-fact style of Renan Ozturk, a climber and Dp on mountaineering films “Valley Uprising,” “Meru” and “Sherpa” for inspiration.

New York-based Visit Films has acquired international sales rights to doc “The Sanctity of Space,” co-directed by Renan Ozturk.
Ozturk was one of the cinematographers and climbers on “Meru,” the breakthrough film of “Free Solo” directors Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhely.
Also a Dp and and director of high-altitude scenes on “Sherpa,” which Variety acclaimed as packing a “visual and emotional punch,” Ozturk co-directs “The Sanctity of Space” with climber-writer Freddie Wilkinson.
Visit Films will be presenting a private promo of the film, currently in post-production, to key partners at the Efm.
“The Sanctity of Space” follows climbing buddies Ozturk, Wilkinson and Zack Smith as they retrace the steps of legendary mountaineer, explorer and photographer Bradford Washburn, who put up many of the first ascents in Alaska.

Get ready for your heart to skip a few beats if you plan to see the current film “Mountain,” featuring goosebumps-inducing footage of wingsuiters, tightrope walkers, Base jumpers, skiers, mountain bikers and rock climbers pursuing passions that take them to the world’s highest peaks, from Alaska to Tibet.
To make the movie, director Jennifer Peedom relied on the skills of Renan Ozturk, a cinematographer who’s also a mountaineer. While Ozturk shot some fresh footage for “Mountain,” the film is mostly assembled from existing clips he lensed, as well as other images from mountaineers culled from multiple suppliers, as evidenced by the film’s lengthy credits list. Peedom, who also worked with Ozturk on her 2015 documentary “Sherpa,” was impressed by the process.
“When I couldn’t find something, Renan would know where to find it,” she says. “It would just take an email from him to say, ‘Hey, my...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Dizzying and dazzling, this is a stirring meditation on the allure, the mystery, and the danger of the world’s highest summits, as places but also as ideas. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Documentarian Jennifer Peedom follows up her marvelous 2015 film Sherpa with another, and very different, perspective on the most soaring elements of our planet’s geography. Mountain is a meditative contemplation on the allure and the mystery, the provocation and the danger of the world’s highest peaks, as places but also as ideas. The perceptive and poetic narration, written by Peedom and Robert Macfarlane and voiced by Willem Dafoe (Murder on the Orient Express), is full of beauty — the “siren song of the summit”; “the mountains we climb are the mountains of the mind” — and snark: show-offy...

Laird Hamilton in Take Every Wave - this is the story of an American icon who changed the sport of big wave surfing forever. Transcending the surf genre, this in-depth portrait of a hard-charging athlete explores the fear, courage and ambition that push a man to greatness — and the cost that comes with it. Photo: Rory Kennedy Rory Kennedy and Jennifer Peedom are among the filmmakers who will be bringing their latest work to San Sebastian's Savage Cinema section this September.

After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best-reviewed filmmaker of the 21st century and Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer the worst, Metacritic’s next list explores the 25 best movies directed by women. Unsurprisingly, Kathryn Bigelow takes both the #1 and #2 spots with “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker,” respectively.

Those who think heights are better left to the birds might find themselves looking for an early exit in Mountain, a ravishing feat of vertiginous filmmaking set to a score of old and new classical compositions recorded by Richard Tognetti (Master and Commander) and his Australian Chamber Orchestra. Examining our historical obsession with the titular peaks, director Jennifer Peedom's follow-up to 2015's Sherpa is a different beast entirely, ditching a traditional human narrative to focus on that film's majestically indifferent backdrop.
The result is one of the most visceral essay films ever made, with Peedom and her Sherpa altitude cinematographer...

"What is this strange force that draws us upwards?" This looks spectacular! An official trailer has debuted for a new documentary experienced titled Mountain, an exploration of the mountains of the world. This is the new film from the director of the documentary Sherpa, named Jennifer Peedom, which was one of my favorite films of 2015, and she has gone all out bringing in some of the most mesmerizing and incredible footage of mountains and mountain climbing you've ever seen. In addition, there's a narration by Willem Dafoe and a beautiful orchestral score by the Australian Chamber Orchestra. If you're lucky to catch this on its tour, it's being performed with a live orchestra, which is even more magical. The film just premiered at the Sydney Film Festival to rave reviews, and hopefully will show up in America soon. Must watch first look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jennifer Peedom's documentary Mountain,...

Scored by a live orchestra at the Sydney Opera House, and narrated by Willem Dafoe, the film is not for the faint-hearted
“I wonder how many people died in the making of that film,” quips my white-knuckled neighbour as the lights come on in the Sydney Opera House concert hall after the world premiere of Mountain, a screening accompanied by sweeping live orchestration that will tour Australia in August.
I saw only one body bag flash across the screen in this masterful documentary – a cinematic and musical collaboration between the director of Sherpa, Jennifer Peedom, and Richard Tognetti’s Australian Chamber Orchestra.

The just-announced lineup is packed with star power, controversies, and a particularly strong Australian contingent. Here are our picks
Landing at that time of the year when summer is still vivid in the memory but beautiful days are increasingly scarce, the Sydney film festival once again promises to further deplete the vitamin D intake of the city’s cinephiles. With 288 films in total, there are more things to do than you will ever be able to cram into your schedule – including a particularly strong line-up of homemade films.
Many Australian titles in the program did not make this list, because there were simply so many to choose from. Omissions include David Wenham’s directorial debut Ellipsis, Ben C Lucas’s sci-fi film OtherLife, Hollie Fifer’s delayed documentary The Opposition, the first two episodes of the second season of Cleverman, and Sherpa director Jennifer Peedom’s new film, Mountain.

This year's Oscars ceremony went off alright, but not without a hitch (or two).
During the In Memoriam section, a photo of Australian producer Jan Chapman (Love Serenade, Lantana, The Babadook) was shown next to the name of late costume designer Janet Patterson, with whom Chapman worked on several Jane Campion films including The Piano, Bright Star and Holy Smoke..
Patterson died in October last year. Her final film was Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts..
.I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson," the still-very-much-breathing Chapman told Variety..
"I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.
