One of the most memorable horror blockbusters in recent memory was director John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place." It remains impressive that the guy who played Jim on "The Office" crafted such a refreshing film (with lots of help from screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods) that has spawned an entire franchise. What tends to happen in the realm of horror is that a string of imitators will follow any major success. Well, the time has finally come as "Arcadian" has unquestionably taken more than a little inspiration from Krasinski's 2018 thriller. That said, this is far more than just a cheap imitation. Moreover, it serves as a showcase for one of our most compelling living actors: Nicolas Cage.
"Arcadian" recently screened at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I was lucky enough to catch the film. Directed by Benjamin Brewer ("The Trust") and written by Michael Nilon ("Braven"), it's certainly not...

‘Arcadian’ Review: Even in a Post-Apocalyptic World, Nicolas Cage Just Wants His Kids Home by Curfew
Nicolas Cage has enjoyed an unparalleled run of indie film weirdness over the past decade, applying his distinct brand of onscreen “Cage-iness” to everything from psychedelic metal revenge sagas to animatronic-laden B-movies and a meta comedy where he played Nicolas Cage. The actor was once mocked for his perceived low standards for roles, but recent reappraisals of his 2010s output have led many to see his willingness to leave everything on the court for small projects as something worth admiring. Even the simplest of premises and the lowest of budgets can become something special as long as Cage is afforded enough screen time to go apeshit.
But that framing, while partially accurate, negates the equally important flip side of Cage’s love affair with independent genre films. His penchant for cinematic freak-outs is unquestioned, but the actor is perfectly willing to lay down his metaphorical weapons and give restrained performances...

Nicolas Cage is back and this time he’s taking us into a grim, post-apocalyptic world in ‘Arcadian’. The movie’s trailer just dropped and it’s everything you’d expect from a thriller set after society’s collapse. Cage, playing Paul, is a dad trying to keep his two sons safe in a world where danger lurks as soon as the sun sets.
The story is set in a near future where life as we know it has crumbled. Paul, along with his sons Joseph, played by Jaeden Martell, and Thomas, played by Maxwell Jenkins, are facing a world filled with night-time terrors. These mysterious creatures come out at night, and according to the eerie trailer, they might be here because of the environmental mess we’ve made. Paul’s voice in the trailer hints at this, saying that these creatures might see humans as the problem, here to ‘cleanse’ the Earth.

Nicolas Cage may have purchased dinosaur bones Irl, but that doesn’t mean the actor will be going extinct anytime soon.
Cage stars in post-apocalyptic survival thriller “Arcadian” where he and his two sons Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins) and Joseph (Jaeden Martell) must fight back against mysterious creatures that prey on the dwindling human population. The world collapsed due to the climate crisis, and now, the monsters are sent to “cleanse the planet of the human race,” as Cage mutters in the trailer. Sadie Soverall also stars.
“Arcadian” is directed by Benjamin Brewer, with whom Cage previously collaborated with for “The Trust.” Mike Nilon penned the “Arcadian” script. Lead-actor Cage also produces the film along with David Wulf, Braxton Pope, Mike Nilon, Arianne Fraser, and Delphine Perrier.

We’ve been paying a lot of attention to the upcoming Osgood Perkins / Nicolas Cage horror movie Longlegs recently, getting ready for that film’s July 12th theatrical release… but today, Deadline has revealed that another Cage thriller will be reaching theatres before Longlegs! That’s the survival thriller Arcadian (formerly known as Sand and Stones), which Rlje Films will be bringing to theatres on April 12th. The movie will then be going to the Shudder and AMC+ streaming services later in the year.

Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

It's not hard to see why Netflix has chosen to follow up Squid Game: The Challenge with The Trust, a new competition series that probes the depths of human greed. Though The Trust's challenges are more of the mental and emotional variety — and theoretically, no one has to be eliminated at all, should the cast decide to split the $250,000 prize — both shows lean heavily into the social experiment genre, placing contestants in unfamiliar settings that require them to choose between their own desires and what's best for the group. Moreover, both boast incredibly diverse casts that counteract the genre's natural inclination to feature players of similar ages and backgrounds (predominantly white and privileged enough to take weeks off work to participate in the show).

Former CNN Newsroom host Brooke Baldwin is bringing her skills to Netflix for its new greed-centric reality competition series The Trust. The eight-part reality series is set to kick off on Wednesday, January 10, and puts eleven strangers at the center of the game which splits a quarter of a million dollars among the players evenly. The question is, will they take their fair share or will the possibility of winning more money divide them? In order to win more money, they’ll have to vote each other out, proving that The Trust is the ultimate test of human nature, as greed and mistrust threaten to destroy relationships made in the game. Ultimately, everyone starts as winners and they can all leave as winners, if they decide to share fair and square. In the vein of Peacock‘s Alan Cumming-hosted The Traitors, this new show puts these players in a...

Nicolas Cage gets a ride in this exclusive first-look image from upcoming survival action-thriller Arcadian (formerly titled Sand and Stones).
The Oscar winner — soon to be seen playing Dracula in Universal’s Renfield with Nicholas Hoult — stars alongside Jaeden Martell (It, Knives Out), Maxwell Jenkins (Dear Edward, Lost in Space) and Sadie Soverall (Fate: The Winx Saga, Saltburn) in the film, directed by Ben Brewer, who was the lead visual effects artist for Everything Everywhere All At Once (and reunites with Cage following the filmmaker’s feature debut The Trust).
Highland Film Group is handling worldwide rights to the feature, which recently wrapped production in Dublin, Ireland and is now in post-production.
Written by Michael Nilon (Braven starring Jason Momoa), Arcadian is set in a post-apocalyptic and sparsely populated world, where Paul (Cage) and his twin teenage sons, Joseph (Martell) and Thomas (Jenkins), have managed to claw out an existence yet live in constant fear.

Highland Film Group is handling worldwide rights to the feature, which recently wrapped production in Dublin, Ireland and is now in post-production.

Following her Emmy-winning performance in "Mare of Easttown," Kate Winslet is returning for a brand new series on HBO. The "Titanic" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" actress is leading the cast of "The Palace," which depicts a year in an authoritarian regime as its foundation begins to crumble within the walls of a palace. Hugh Grant is part of the cast alongside Winslet -- he was last seen in Netflix's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" in a cameo appearance, playing Benoit Blanc's live-in partner.
"The Palace" is rocking talent behind the scenes too, with the writers of "Succession," "The Menu," and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" working with the directors of "The Crown" and "The Queen."
While their characters, the plot, and filming details are being kept under wraps, here's everything we know -- as yet -- about HBO's "The Palace."

Nicolas Cage has had enough of the press taking shots at him for his era of straight-to-vod movies. The Oscar winner had a string of theatrical flops around 2014, including duds such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” and so his career pivoted almost exclusively to VOD titles like “The Runner,” “Pay the Ghost,” “The Trust” and more. Anyone who claimed Cage didn’t care about his career during this era was dead wrong.
“People thought I didn’t care. I did. I was caring,” Cage recently told Rolling Stone. “I think that I did some of the best work of my life in that so-called ‘direct to video’ period. ‘Massive Talent’ was in that group. ‘Mandy’ was in that group. ‘Pig,’ ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans,’ ‘Joe,’ ‘Mom and Dad,’ ‘Color Out of Space’ — they were all in that group. ‘The Runner’ I thought was terrific.

Nicolas Cage Lists His Recent Films He Thinks Are Better Than ‘Anything I Did in the First 30 Years’
In the leadup to next weekend’s release of “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” the entire film world is talking about Nicolas Cage. The famously wacky actor is back in the spotlight for his critically acclaimed role as himself in Tom Gormican’s buddy comedy, which he believes is some of the best acting work he has ever done.
The film has prompted many cinephiles to revisit the multitude of films that Cage made in the 2010s. While Cage was often unfairly maligned in recent years as an actor who would never turn down a role, a closer look at his filmography reveals many little-seen gems from recent years. And nobody agrees with that assessment more than Cage himself.
Speaking to Collider, Cage said he believes his collection of small films from the 2010s represents some of the best work of his career, and listed the recent films that...

Don't you adore this family?
Ollerman tried to break the team up on Whiskey Cavalier Season 1 Episode 8, but he may have brought them closer together.
Not only did the hour highlight how close the team is, but it showcased how far they have come as individuals since their first introduction.
Ollerman was back, and while there is no way in hell he should've have escaped and taken off into the wind without the team taking him down, I'm glad he did.
He's such a great villain for the series. He's their best adversary because of how well he knows most of them. He spent years working with Will, Ray, and Susan, and he was a quick study with Frankie, Jai, and Standish.
The best villains are those who can play mental warfare with the protagonists. The moments where he was reading everyone so well was as good as any fight scene or shootout.

On screen, the revenge film Mandy is a ferocious fever-dream, but off screen it has been a game-changing success story for SpectreVision, the production company founded by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller. The film has won over critics and a growing fan following since its January premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and Wood now tells Deadline his company is sizing up an Oscar campaign for star Nicolas Cage.
“This is absolutely the most successful film and best-reviewed film we’ve made since we started this company eight years ago to focus on genre and horror films and to push the boundaries of what one considers those things to be,” said Wood, best known as the actor who portrayed the intrepid hobbit Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings films.

I annoyed Jerry Lewis once by asking him about The Day the Clown Cried, a movie he starred in and directed in 1972, and then refused to release. "It's awful," said Lewis of the Holocaust drama in which he starred as a circus clown who entertains Jewish children as he leads them to their deaths in Nazi gas chambers. Why not show it and let the world decide? "I'm ashamed of it," Lewis told me flatly. When I pressed him, he flashed a look that could be subtitled "End of Discussion.

The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^
In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.
The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

Nicolas Cage doesn’t hurt for work. The Academy Award-winner starred in five movies last year, whether you saw them or not (even as a Cage devotee, I only ended up seeing two), and the prolific actor already has a whopping six set to arrive later this year, including the already-released Arsenal from earlier this month. But the rage inside Cage doesn’t go down quietly. He figured out his next project, the bank heist drama 211, which starts filming in March in Bulgaria.
Written and directed by York Alex Shackleton, 211 follows a good cop (Cage) trying to dismantle a recent bank heist. Seems simple enough, right? 211, by the way, is police code for robbery in progress. It finds Cage on the other side of the law this time, as he recently found himself portraying a quirky bank robber in last year’s overlooked dark comedy The Trust, which was one...

I got to talk with Director Of Photography Sean Porter, a second time, in regards to his latest film 20th Century Women. You may know his work from Eden, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, The Trust, and/or Green Room, but I'd be impressed if you spotted an obvious throughline in his ouevre. Watching 20th Century Women I was unaware he had shot it til the credits rolled. As a cinematographer who hopes to adapt/evolve entirely to the given material, he surely takes that news as a compliment of the highest form.
Sean Porter photographed two of my favorite films of 2016. Released first was Green Room, a brutal siege horror exercise, which we talked about earlier in the year, and the other is 20th Century Women, which, during comparison, he describes as “a coming of age, sun-drenched, family dramedy”. They could not be more different. Although, in terms of his approach to exposure,...
