Nina Dobrev shines in a lackluster drama, hindered by a predictable plot, lame screenplay, and overlong runtime
ambusched9428 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
More so in the drama genre than pure comedy, although I did chuckle a couple times. The screenplay is lame, too predictable towards the end when she's forgiven so easily in a short amount of time, and the later half of the film is dragged out overstaying its welcome. The runtime could've been cut down by 20 minutes. There's a right way to do a taboo subject like faking cancer for attention and there's a bad way: Sick Girl is the latter.

I literally was like this is starting to fall into the silly, stupid category once I got to the scene where Wren's (Nina Dobrev) best friends have shaved their head in support of her cancer diagnosis, which she has been faking just to get the attention of her friends so that it could bring them together and they can hang out more often like old times. Nina puts in a fantastic committed performance, showcasing her dramatic range in her lead role as Wren and tbh she deserves better lead role material. Though, her performance cannot salvage how pathetically bland and disjointed the film's writing is by director/writer Jennifer Cram.

Although, I did like the emphasized theme of the significance of preserving and maintaining close friendships in adulthood, regardless of life responsibilities and individual paths of having kids, being married, etc. That shouldn't take priority over important friendships you hold dear to you. They are equal and it's all about balance, and making time for what and who is meaningful in your life.

Not a film I'd recommend going out of your way to watch, but if you're a fan of Nina's acting and on-screen presence (like I am), then yes I recommend Sick Girl as a one-time viewing. In overview though, she deserves better-written indie drama films or a drama series to star in.

Sick Girl (Nina Dobrev) Has Got The Cure.

How do you take a controversial idea & then produce a heartwarming story of self discovery. Answer you hire Nina Dobrev to play the lead. From a desperate lie, guilt ridden Wren successfully rekindles friendships from years long past. While I enjoyed the film you are left feeling it could have been so much more. More meat on the bone was required to understand why these friendships were so important. Yet it's still fun & at times extremely awkward. What we are ultimately left with is a classic story of redemption. I guess we can all relate at some level. Supporting cast all did a good job with limited material. Sick Girl could have been terminal but Dobrev's charm never fails to draw you in. I guess she always has the cure. Still waiting to see her in a role worthy of her extensive talents. 7/10.

Exceptional Comedy

Absolutely hilarious! My new #1 go to comedy!!! Funny, funny story that replicates real life! Loved the script and all of the actresses and actors! I'll be watching this movie again and again!! I laughed until I cried! Will be a great movie to watch with my sisters and close friends!! I cannot wait to see more work from this writer and director!!! Although it was a sensitive subject, the subject matter is given it's due diligence-never made light of this. The main character is appropriately ashamed of the fib that she tells. The supporting cast really pulled through for their friend! Truly a great work!

Equally funny, fun, sensitive, enjoyeable, and serious to watch.

Great movie. Perfect comedic timing, loved the cast (joy to watch), characters, plot, and terrific pace. I watched it for Nina Dobrev and I really thought it was a "sick girl" movie; boy was I surprised - delightedly so.

I think it was actually well written as not to offend anybody. I especially loved the comedic timing of the cast and I actually laughed hard and loud on most jokes; it actually deserves to be in the comedy genre. The pace & transition of the story was perfect. Ending was properly done with appropriate realistic touch. The lessons/morals of the movie are there, albeit the motifs to almost every movie out there. I would totally rewatch this and will highly recommend this to people.

Mix of comedy and drama, mostly comedy.

There is couple of laugh out loud moments and there is a lot of the cringe style comedy moments. The movie deals with cancer, friendship and growing up but is mostly lighthearted.

Nina Dobrev does a great job, the supporting cast is solid, no bad acting from anyone. Good chemistry.

Copy pasting because character limit
