Hafsia Herzi will be setting her sights on her third outing as early as next year. We’ve known Herzi as the face of Abdellatif Kechiche’s The Secret of the Grain and in Mark Jackson’s last pair of films in War Story and This Teacher, but she has firmly made her place as a filmmaker with two Cannes Film Festival selected films of You Deserve a Lover (2019) and Bonne Mère (2021).
Currently toplining Stéphane Demoustier’s Ibiza (formerly titled Borgo), and with the status of Patricia Mazuy’s Portraits trompeurs unknown, Herzi recently received some coin for La Petite Dernière (back in March) and will likely be going through some extensive casting to find the film’s lead.…...

Venice’s Critics’ Week, Berlinale and Locarno filmmaker Stéphane Demoustier is set to begin production on his fourth feature film which will film in May on the island of Corsica. There appears to have been a change in location as the initial title was “Ibiza.” We’ve yet to get a logline on Borgo but we found out a bit late in the casting process that Hafsia Herzi and the less known Moussa Mansaly will topline the project. Demoustier’s last film the courtroom thriller The Girl with a Bracelet (read review) “offers a surprising amount of jealousy and sexuality lurks beneath the façade of normalcy between two teen girls which makes for gripping melodrama in an oft-acrimonious courtroom drama.”…...

Fresh, which premiered earlier this month on Hulu, opened to mostly positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes rating the movie an 81 percent certified fresh based on 180 reviews. The movie is a directorial debut by Lauryn Kahn, who had previously worked as a writer for projects like Ibiza, The Other Guys, Fresh, and Step Brothers. The movie is produced by comedy legend Adam McKay, who brought us Don’t Look Up, as well as Kevin Messick and Maeve Cullinane. Here’s a synopsis of the film: “Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and — given her frustration with

This review of “Fresh” was originally posted Jan. 21, 2022 from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
It takes a long, long time before the so-called “opening credits” roll in Mimi Cave’s decadently horrifying directorial debut “Fresh.” That’s probably because, as wonderful as the film’s first act is, we ain’t seen nothing yet.
“Fresh” begins with the latest in what seems to be a long, long line of crappy online dates for Noa. She hates the modern courtship process — and with good cause — but, dang it, it’s the 21st century, and her options seem limited to swiping right and hoping for the best or a lifetime of lousy loneliness.
So it’s something of a shock when she actually meets a real live person, in a real-life grocery store, who shows an interest her and doesn’t seem like a total sack of crap. Steve has great taste in produce.

Exclusive: ABC is developing a multi-camera sitcom set in a barbershop and beauty salon from 2 Dope Queens co-creator Phoebe Robinson and The Amber Ruffin Show writer Dewayne Perkins.
The network has put Chopped & Screwed in the works with the pair with Perkins, who was also a co-producer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, attached to star as well.
The series is centered on a Black barbershop and beauty salon that, due to unavoidable circumstances, must come together as one entity to continue servicing the superficial and therapeutic needs of their customers and community.
Robinson and Perkins will write and exec produce. ABC Signature, where Robinson has an overall deal, is producing in association with Robinson’s Tiny Reparations and LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company.
It is Robinson’s latest project for a Disney-owned network; she recently scored a series order at Freeform for Everything’s Trash, an adaptation of her memoir.

Comedy fans may think they know Phoebe Robinson, but, with her new Comedy Central series, she’s about to show off many new sides of herself, all while celebrating some of her famous friends’ special skills and hobbies.
Launching April 9 with two back-to-back episodes, “Doing the Most With Phoebe Robinson” is the multi-hyphenate’s take on a talk show — but instead of sitting down on plush couches for a few minutes of banter about her guest’s latest project, they’re taking their discussion out into the world, sometimes over a friendly archery competition, sometimes in a recording booth, sometimes while wine tasting and, in the premiere episode, on horseback.
“The biggest inspiration for this show is honestly, I’m such a workaholic and so many people I know are [as well]. I spent so much time building my career and focusing, writing books or doing stand-up or podcasting or acting. And...

The pandemic has made desperadoes of all of us. There’s a strange kind of helplessness that sets in as home-bound film fans search for a decent movie to watch. Mind you, the medium has existed for more than a century, and its classics have never been more available than they are now. But unless you subscribe to a cinephile service like the Criterion Channel or Mubi, the good stuff isn’t curated in a way to help audiences stuck at home. And so, unsure what to watch, we settle for movies like “Desperados,” another lazy example of comedy-as-content from the Netflix machine, and among the service’s most popular performers for July.
If you liked such Netflix originals as “Ibiza” and “Wine Country,” try “Desperados,” or so the algorithm goes. Even the movie seems to have been made by computer, resulting in — to prove that leading lady Nasim Pedrad deserves a better movie.

The banner will be dedicated to the development and production of premium TV series for the U.S., as well as international co-productions. Wachsberger and Ashley Stern, Federation’s head of U.S. television, will be based in Los Angeles representing the newly formed venture.

Political conspiracy thriller “Bodyguard” is Britain’s biggest TV hit in years, and it’s easy to see why. With Jed Mercurio’s suspenseful story and mesmerizing performances by Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes, it’s an intoxicating and addictive television cocktail. Ten minutes in, and viewers will want to binge all six hours of the new Netflix-distributed series that examines how the London corridors of power grapple with the increased threat of terrorism.
This is not a remake of the 1992 Whitney Houston-Kevin Costner thriller “The Bodyguard,” although it does feature a hardened private security specialist David Budd (Madden) assigned to protect a high-profile woman, who in this case is the implacable Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes). Both are accustomed to taking charge and forge a wary professional alliance that eventually crosses into the personal.

Puerto Rican spark plug Ozuna enlists bachata star Romeo Santos on “Ibiza,” a compulsively listenable highlight of his brand new album, Aura. No Latin singer has sold more albums (313,000) in the first six months of 2018 than Ozuna; streaks of hits like the one in the middle of Aura reveal just why.
“Ibiza” starts with an acoustic guitar lick that remains blissfully genre-agnostic: It could be an introduction to another one of Santos’ come-hither bachatas, a Miley Cyrus pop smash from 2008, one of Jojo’s R&B earworms from 2004, or an...

Paramount Sets First Look Deal With Adam McKay & Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez & Gloria Sanchez Labels
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has set Gary Sanchez Productions and sister label Gloria Sanchez into a new three-year first look feature deal. Gary Sanchez Productions is led by principals Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with producer Jessica Elbaum heading Gloria Sanchez.
This comes as Paramount percolates the Demetri Martin scripted Will, and the English language remake of the German comedy Toni Erdmann, with Lisa Cholodenko to direct a vehicle for Kristen Wiig.
Ferrell and McKay once had a deal under the prior regime at Paramount but left the studio. Bringing them back is a coup for chairman Jim Gianopulos and Paramount Motion Picture Group president Wyck Godfrey. Gary Sanchez Productions films have grossed almost $1 billion worldwide for Paramount. That includes Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters ($226M), Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues ($173M), the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg Daddy’s Home ($242M) and Daddy’s Home 2 ($180M) and The Big Short, the...

Streaming services have opened the door for multilingual series like worldwide Netflix hit “Narcos,” but dramas in English still dominate TV’s Golden Age, travel the most widely and draw the biggest distribution deals. International companies are scrambling for a piece of the action — including, perhaps surprisingly, producers in France, despite the country’s perceived snobbery about other languages.
Federation Entertainment, the 5-year-old firm behind Netflix’s first French show, “Marseille,” and Canal Plus spy show “The Bureau,” is the latest French player to step into the competitive U.S. market, with nearly a dozen English-language projects in the pipeline. Unlike outfits such as Gaumont or EuropaCorp, Federation is one of the few sizable, fully independent TV outfits left in France, and not only has opened an office in L.A. but is also developing projects with Paramount TV and other American companies.
Even so, breaking into the U.S.

Between “Ocean’s 8,” “Overboard,” a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” called “The Hustle” and a follow-up to “What Women Want” called “What Men Want,” the surge of gender-swapped reboots in recent years is real. It’s a smart way of dusting off proven properties with a fresh point of view. And thankfully, there’s been an equal push to not just remake old movies with women but provide the right amount of diversity on screen in original properties as well. There’s still a long way to go though, and we polled the women of TheWrap to see what favorite films they’d like to see get gender-swapped next.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Hollywood loves a good trend, and when Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” debuted a work in progress print at the SXSW Film Festival in March of 2011, delighting audiences with the kind of bawdy comedy typically reserved for male-driven comedies, people were quick to predict that its charms would suddenly translate to a gold rush of other R-rated comedies featuring talented female stars. When the film opened two months later and made nearly $170 million at the domestic box office alone, the message was clear: There’s a market for these movies.
But more didn’t come. At least, not right away.

I love romantic comedies. Every Christmas, my mother and I are those people who watch “Love, Actually.” And I”m not ashamed to admit I saw “He’s Just Not That Into You”and “Mamma Mia!” in theaters. Twice. This might be a surprising revelation if you’re familiar with my criticism – I care deeply about female characters and am especially skeptical of films that write them poorly.

In F-rated Netflix comedy “Ibiza,” best friends Harper (Gillian Jacobs), Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) and Leah (Phoebe Robinson) have ditched Manhattan for a wild weekend in Spain where they’ll be welcomed with the 10 words every girl wants to hear: “Please serve yourself with food, drinks, and eye-opening sexual experiences.” That greeting is courtesy of wealthy mansion-owner Hernando (Jordi Mollà), one of a soccer-team’s worth of suitors vying to take the Americans to bed. Men come and go with a breezy freedom, not the manifest destiny of ordinary romantic comedies. Except for Harper’s laser-focus on a Scottish DJ named Leo who inspires her to re-route their vacation from Barcelona to eponymous party island, where she hopes to make stoned eyes at him across a nightclub as the Edm beat pumps like her heart.

Fifteen minutes into Alex Richenbach’s “Ibiza,” Vanessa Bayer breaks out into the first instance of its well-executed physical comedy. The “SNL” stars jumps onto a plush hotel bed to let out the first of many “woooooo!”s that punctuate the film’s script, before giving way to an unexpected result, which Bayer and company milk for every single laugh. The set-up is the kind we’ve seen many times before, but while the hilarity of the moment initially seems indicative of just what Bayer is about to bring to the table, it eventually reveals itself to be emblematic of the film itself: familiar trappings, gussied up with a fresh script from screenwriter Lauryn Kahn.
