First class
TheLittleSongbird15 August 2016
'Mayerling' was a new discovery not too long ago, and a great one with its moving story that would be even more magical with great lead chemistry and a great use of Liszt's magnificent music(some of the pieces used orchestral versions of pieces originally for piano).

This performance is first class in all senses, and even better than the equally first class 2010 production also from Royal Opera House that was let down somewhat by some borderline dreadful camera work. The costumes and sets are both sumptuous and atmospheric depending on the mood of the music used in the scene, more on the latter seeing how dark and sometimes claustrophobic the story is, and the lighting is dynamic and expressive.

Orchestral playing is first rate, bringing intense power and heartfelt pathos to the music and the conducting accommodates the action and keeps the story and action moving swiftly without rushing through it. The choreography is impeccable being both intricate and dramatic, with masterful interaction between the performers. The way dancers move in ballet always captivated me and this production of 'Mayerling' is no different, and while the movements are strenuous especially for Rudolf the movements are so fluid and beautifully placed that it looks easier than it actually is.

The performances are terrific, especially from Edward Watson's gracefully and soulfully danced and very emotionally acted Rudolf (quite mesmerising actually) and Mara Galeazzi who matches him in grace and emotion. Their chemistry together is magical, making the emotional scenes really poignant.

Supporting cast are equally strong, especially from Zenaida Yanowsky's vividly and powerfully acted, complete with poised and very dramatic dancing, Elisabeth.

In conclusion, first class. 10/10 Bethany Cox
