Disappointing, cliché-laden, pretentious
LillyPiper20 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this movie. It has many things I enjoy: sci-fi, philosophy, sociology, quantum physics, bio-and neuro-engineering, music, and shiny tech. After a bit of a rough start, it finally found its stride and proceeded to walk right over a cliff of plot holes and half-formed ideas, landing in some sort of messy diatribe on religion. Or that technology is evil. Or something. The plot doesn't so much *twist* as flop about like a dying fish. And whenever you begin to think it's getting interesting, here comes that fish to slap your face.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

The movie pokes at you in every scene, apparently terrified you'll miss this clever thing they've done on the back wall, or that reference to the devil with all the finesse of a forty-foot troll, and now oh my god there are hip-hop demons. Did you catch the SUBTLE references to the blonde seer woman and the birds? Birds have wings, you know. And they move together. Gee, I wonder what else has wings? Oh! Actual angels, do you get it? Still too subtle? Paint giant wings on a wall and have the actor brood a lot as he leans against them in the perfect place.

And that's just *one* example of a near infinite supply. It really seems desperate that you know how clever it is. I've never really thought of metaphor/symbolism as a weapon before, but this movie seems hell-bent on bludgeoning the audience to death with it. Everything - and I do mean everything - has been slathered in so much edgy symbolism I'm amazed the actors didn't drown in it. This can be a good thing when done well (as in The Sixth Sense), but can quickly become silly and full of itself (as in Lady in the Water). I laughed out loud several times at points that I'm fairly sure were intended to be serious, but towards the end, laughing seemed a bit like picking on a small child and I just felt sorry for the cast.

For example, the 'angelic', spiritually enlightened character who literally dresses in white and if she were any paler, she'd be translucent begins wearing white wings at one point, just in case you somehow missed the message. And *of course* their arch rivals seem allergic to the concept of colour. Many, many times things were just too on-the-nose and the actors seemed to struggle under the endless clichés. Mediocre acting by all, as though they didn't want to be in the movie, and it felt like a waste of big talent.

Rather than pick apart this tangled circus further, I'll just end with its climax because it sums up the whole thing well: Armageddon happens in this one town, with technologically-enhanced demons doing parkour. There's a christian/demon/zombie synchronised dance battle (à la Michael Jackson) *to the literal death* and I didn't make any of that up.

It isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but it's rather far down the list.

The double slit experiment...
fgapmtn27 January 2020
The double slit experiment has got to be the most misunderstood, abused and misused result ever to come out of physics. And, aside from causing so many people to misinterpret quantum physics, it unfortunately forms the basis for mountains of both fiction and non-fiction literature.

You can't explain the theories tested in this movie in 2 hours
gunn-wrights25 January 2022
While not a superb film, it does assume you are familiar with theories such as Schrodinger's Cat. Or Unified field theory, or Parallel universes, or String Theory, or Brain bridging etc. I'm not going to pretend I know everything about these theories, but I do watch a lot of science and space documentaries. And also, many of these theories are controversial in science, philosophy, or religion.

RECOMMEND: If you like the POSSIBILITIES of of these theories, you may find it OK to watch - it kind of takes a leap of faith, aka 'imagination' but at least you'll understand it. I found it interesting - I've seen MUCH worse!!

All style no substance
bonjovirocker9 May 2019
What utterly contrived garbage, it spent so much effort making itself look "alternative" yet "trendy" that it forgot to actually include anything remotely like a coherrant story.

Sam Neill is about the only redeeming feature in this drivel, it's core ideas were interesting but it completely wasted them.

This movie was a disjointed, convoluted, and absolute piece of crap. Do not waste your time watching this. The "plot" is an incomprehensible mess with terrible acting.

Seriously, don't waste your freaking time. I feel robbed of 90 minutes. I'm legitimately angry about losing this small amount of time. I grant this movie no points and I hope the director has an unfulfilling and unhappy life.

What in the actual F
taywarren2929 January 2020
I was bored within the first 5 minutes. This movie has no plot line, period. The conversations between people make zero sense. The concept makes zero sense. There's almost a sense that the writer tried to purposefully make it not understandable in a conceided way like "this is beyond you, you wouldn't understand". I understand that I'm snoring and this is uncreative and just dumb.

style over substance is accurate
stuartthiel5 January 2018
Pretentious, very over-acted, though I blame script and direction for that. It wanted to bring a coolness and edge to a critical analysis of religion and existentialism. It cast science in terms of religion, or religion in terms of science. It balanced the individual against the concept of a group consciousness. It played on the idea of reality as something that one could shift into and out of as a counter (or complement) to determinism. The film over-reached a fair bit and occasionally broke character to toss a line to the likely bewildered audience to help them get over some of the more significant leaps. There was too much slow-mo of Melia Kreiling, as delightful as her screen-presence is. Still, moderate effects, some decently pretty visuals, actors making the best of their material and it's not the worst thing I've seen lately. You're better off (re-)watching the Matrix for an equivalent sci-fi edginess that touches on similar philosophical topics but is way better (and doesn't show its age at all).

I have more than a passing interest in science, physics and theology but...
doktorwirefly30 April 2020
Trying to make sense of this is like using cotton wool for an anvil. It simply does not work. Not in any universe, however alternate or infinite. Save your money and your time. Avoid it.

1 ratings do not exaggerate
mesoinvisible15 January 2020
The premise is interesting but the execution is beyond poor. Save yourself the time suck and skip this movie.

Self indulgent cliched mess of a movie. Someone must've had really rich really connected parents to get this made. What a mess.

Convoluted Mess of a Movie
larrys33 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes when I start watching a movie like this that's not working for me at any level I wonder whether I'm being too harsh and critical in my assessment of it. However, I can see by the reviewers that have preceded me on this site that I am not alone.

This film was just a convoluted mess of a movie, with an absolutely nonsensical script accompanied by very wooden acting. Why the fine actor Sam Neill is in this abomination is beyond me. Of course, presenting this turkey apparently wasn't enough for the filmmakers, they had to throw in some clips of animals seemingly being abused during experiments just for good measure.

I know redbox isn't going to give me back my $1.59, but maybe I can help others to not spend their money on this dud.

Don't get the negative reviews
tlynnwilliams24 December 2021
No spoilers just surprised how many people seem to already need some help in reprogramming their brains if they gave this such horrible ratings. Perhaps you have fallen into the Hollywood blockbuster, social media hive mind and need everything spelled out perfectly for you because sometimes beauty or originality can only truly be appreciated by those who still retain some original thought, a thirst for knowledge and stimulation beyond their smart devices ;)

Sci fi/Cyberpunk
larryv-4273830 July 2017
Lot's of eye candy. The film has great photographic style coupled with a non-linear narrative, which some people will love and some may hate. I think hardcore fans of Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk will appreciate it.I would highly recommend everyone to watch this. Not sure why this movie is getting such negative reviews.

Not Worth Wasting Your Time!!!
naveennuta29 March 2017
The biggest mistake was to give into the marketing hype of collective cognition bands on the day of the world premier that would be given to the audience and results would be shown live after the movie to see the brain mapping (which didn't happen).

The movie has nothing to do with the experiment, the story, the plot-line is bizarrely vague and made no sense.

Everything was a rip off, marketing gimmick to sell this movie which even Sam O Neil couldn't have carried on his shoulders, the producers knew that this movie would be a huge huge disaster and the only way to make money would be create an unrealistic hype to justify selling the tickets 20 bucks a pop.

The story is meaningless, acting was worse than B grade movies, the graphics were cheap, there is absolutely nothing praise worthy about this film.

teetering between a 4 and a 5 for me; it's pretty, shallow, and confusing... weak plot built out of decent premise.

it tries for the mindbendy wow that was managed in films like inception, but misses considerably...

i feel like if you enjoyed "the cell" there's a chance you'll enjoy this... it is pretty, i'll give it that

A disconnected, discombobulated load of visual salad
sherripadgitt4 January 2022
The title of my review says it all. Not much of a story. It seemed like at first this might be a good watch, but for each idea they had...they move onto another extremely strange ordeal. Again, visual salad.

Bait & Switch, not Science
gypsysoul-411-2824593 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has little to do with science and is being used for nothing more than religious propaganda. The trailer is purposely deceitful, and leads the viewer to believe they're seeing a sci-fi thriller, when it's more like something an "edgy" mega church would churn out to warn people about technology. Luckily I was able to get my money back

Misleading trailer, terrible movie
bal-2487429 May 2017
The trailer was really cool, made this seem like a sci-fi action movie with a really intriguing concept. The concept was intriguing but it was not sci-fi or action. The trailer was very misleading. It was mostly boring as dirt, and was very random. Movie was all over the place, plot was barely there, this SEEMED to have an anti-technology "science has gone too far!" theme but it was impossible to tell. Random bits were thrown all over, bad acting. This movie just sucked.

Don't let the one positive review fool you, if you want a philosophy lecture or discussion of the brain and consciousness or whatever, watch a lecture, not this bad movie. A lecture would be far more interesting. I love a cerebral, complex even difficult movie but this wasn't that, just bad.

1st 10 minutes had Sam Neill which gave it promise. The rest of the movie was a stinker. Boring and confusing with flashbacks. Watch "The Matrix" instead.

believe the 1 star reviews
sonu-0439427 August 2020
I have to warn other hopeful viewers to avoid this movie. Like the other 1 star reviews stated, this movie is incoherent and very poor in execution of the theme. It attempted to be artsy and failed to deliver the basic elements of a good movie. After 90 minutes you will wonder what you just watched and wish you could delete it from Netflix, so that no one else suffers.

Intensely mind bending movie that deserves credit
slipskinny29 February 2020
Mindgamers is a provocative movie that explores the implications of reality. The preconceived notion that it is governed by a force that is larger than any one of us is true but to what degree. As technology moves itself inching forward towards the edge of our reality what is it that lies beyond. It is ourselves or it is a unified universe in which everyone exists at one? Mindgamers asks the question of what is possible or what is impossible at the same time? It's a logical film that requires very careful attention. If you miss a scene then you'll be completely lost. Just like reality, it portrays the possibilities of what the human consciousness and how it affects each one of us is immeasurable.

Great low budget syfy
travisammons8 March 2020
I don't know why this film has such a low score of 3.5. I am a hard-core sci-fi fan and I found it quite engaging. It wasn't the best thing on the lot by any stretch but it did introduce some interesting ideas and then had the audacity to actually answer them within the same film! Truly innovative! You have to remember that this is a low budget film. Yeah the FX aren't amazing but The actors performances are and that plus a good script with a decent ending is I should really be asking for for sci-fi film these days. I'll give it a seven and it's on Netflix right now.

There's another reality.. where i wasn't let down
andregs-873215 April 2017
Its funny, saying this movie is a waste of time in a way is a spoiler. the movie seemingly wants you to leave with that conclusion.

Its one of those experiences where at the credits end, you look around wonder what went wrong.

You look around the empty theater that has continued to be empty from the moment you arrived and realized you were the only one in a 45 mile radius to fall for this. You look on the screen after credits, and see some 'intense dude' with his 'futurey' cover of "grapevine" on repeat for 15 minutes.

You think back to the entire process that lead you there: when you first heard about the hype, the possibilities, the purchase of the twenty dollar tickets, and the thrill of driving 45 minutes to Greenville to see the film.

And you find yourself feeling goop-ed out of your time and energy. YouTube does what this movie does on the reg.

ricenbeans9829 October 2021
I honestly wanted to turn this movie off during the first hour or so. However I was bored and continued on. Honestly it makes a point towards the end that in my opinion reflects the direction we have headed.
