Hex Studios, the Scotland-based horror studio that launched in 2017, has wrapped filming on supernatural horror feature Automata.

The company’s latest production is from writer-director duo Lawrie Brewster and Sarah Daly. It centres on a historian who is called upon to authenticate a legendary clockwork doll which is discovered in the basement of a Scottish mansion. As he investigates the item’s history, the malevolent forces surrounding it are awakened.

Disney, Fox and Picturehouse were the big winners at the Screen Awards 2016, recognising excellence in UK marketing, distribution and exhibition.

The awards were handed out at a glamorous ceremony at The Brewery in London tonight (October 20). Broadcaster Edith Bowman hosted the event for the fifth year.

Disney Studios took home the hotly contested distributor of the year award, having delivered the biggest film of all time at the UK box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which also scooped theatrical campaign of the year (100 sites and over).

Twentieth Century Fox were triumphant in four categories, winning 3D campaign of the year for The Martian, premiere of the year (100 sites or above) for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, marketing team of the year and PR team of the year (in-house). Exclusive: Creative England backs feature about gay couple who plot revenge against a conservative B&B owner.

UK production outfit Hummingbird Films has begun shooting in Bristol on thriller B&B, the directorial debut of Trance co-writer Joe Ahearne.

Paul McGann (Withnail & I), Tom Bateman (Jekyll & Hyde) and Sean Teale (Reign) star in the story of a gay couple who return to bait the owner of a remote B&B one year after they successfully sued him for not allowing them to share a bed.

However, events take a deadly turn when a guest with even more sinister intentions arrives.

B&B is backed by Creative England, Ffilm Cymru Wales and Isabelle Georgeaux of Pont Neuf Productions. 4SquareFilms handles international sales.

British psychological thriller Dartmoor Killing is using an innovative distribution, starting with self-distribution in cinemas from September 18 followed by a DVD and VOD release by Soda Pictures later in the autumn.

The story follows two friends When on a hiking weekend on Dartmoor, both are carrying secrets they have not shared. An encounter with a man on the moors leads them into a terrifying ordeal.

Frances Harvey, acquisitions manager at Soda said: “We were first introduced to Dartmoor Killing at Film London’s Micro Market and are thrilled to be working with the team on the DVD and digital release of the film.”

The film’s theatrical plans a run at the Barn Cinema in Darlington and new sites added for the Merlin and Scott cinema chains as well as Bristol’s Watershed.

Producer is Jayne Chard with Penny Wolf and Luke Randolph exec producing. The film was developed with the support of Film London’s Build Your Audience and Micro- Market. International Film Trust has sold out on Cannes market title You Shall Know Our Velocity. The Peter Sollett-directed comedy stars Daniel Radcliffe and is based on the Dave Eggers novel.

This year’s edition runs Oct 15-16, with the Micro Market to run on the second day.

Film London has launched the Production Finance Market (Pfm), with a global call for applications targeting experienced producers with projects to pitch international financiers.

Dates have been set for the eighth Pfm, which will take place in London from October 15-16.

Following a successful pilot in 2013, the Film London Micro Market will run alongside the event on October 16. Aimed at projects budgeted at under $1.4m (€1m), the Micro Market connects UK filmmakers with financiers seeking low budget features, as well as providing crucial training.

As part of the recruitment drive for applications, Film London is presenting a panel on the International Marketplace, with an introduction to the Pfm, in Cannes today from 1.30pm to 2.30pm at the UK Film Centre.
