In addition to starring in Ti West’s 1970s-set slasher X, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) was also an executive producer on the subsequent prequel Pearl and this year’s sequel MaXXXine, and the singer/actor has taken to Twitter this week to tease another collaboration with West.
Mescudi tweets, “Wait til u see what me and Ti West do next.”
We have no idea what Mescudi is referring to at this time, so it’s important to note here that it’s not necessarily even a horror project at all. While Ti West is primarily known as a horror filmmaker, making a name for himself with films including The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament, he’s also strayed from the genre. Of particular note, West directed the Western In a Valley of Violence back in 2016. Point being, it’s not a guarantee that West and...

MaXXXine concludes Ti West’s ambitious, genre-defying trilogy. We chat to the director about returning to horror and crafting an unexpected slasher with his trilogy closing film.
Ti West’s filmography is an eclectic one. He made a mockumentary with The Sacrament, a traditional ghost story with The Innkeepers, a western with In A Valley Of Violence and his breakout film House Of The Devil managed to recreate the distinct feel and style of 80s horror films to a tee.
But it was 2022’s X that really made West’s name with a gruesome, 70s-set slasher. It was followed by the equally flamboyant Pearl which took inspiration from Technicolor films of Old Hollywood.
The trilogy now comes to a close with MaXXXine, which is an unusual slasher. In fact, in our review of Ti West’s latest film, we suggested it isn’t one.

While we're all rightfully raving about the unpredictable bent of Zach Cregger's "Barbarian," it seems no one has proved to be more of a chameleon in the world of horror this year than Ti West. It was well known that "X" was going to be West's return behind the camera after "In a Valley of Violence," but I don't think any of us were prepared for an entire universe of his making.
At the SXSW premiere for "X," West revealed that he utilized the film's sets to shoot an entire prequel film named "Pearl" in secret. It's crazy that we already have a follow-up to one of the best films of the year within less than six months. If that wasn't already cool enough, as of last night's screening of "Pearl" at the Toronto International Film Festival, West unleashed a teaser promo for "MaXXXine," the third film in the series,...

Romance may not be dead, but it sure is deadly in Ti West’s X, the latest film from the horror auteur best known for 2009’s satanic panic shocker, House of the Devil. West makes his way back into the horror fold after a bloody western detour in 2016’s In a Valley of Violence, and it’s a welcome return for one of the 21st centuries most interesting genre voices. Far from the slow burn storytelling of his last three horror features, House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament; X is a balls-out sexy slasher that recalls his earliest work and proves that the much-maligned subgenre still has potential to surprise after over forty years of exploitation. The story follows a sextet of young, hungry...

About a decade ago, Ti West was a director to watch in the horror genre thanks to 2009’s “The House Of The Devil” and 2011’s “The Innkeepers.” West hasn’t been up to much since the commercial failure of 2016’s “In A Valley Of Violence,” though. Since that film, West has stuck to directing episodes of various TV series like “Scream,” “The Exorcist,” and “Them.”

The set of “Rust” seemed to produce an unending list of tragic circumstances, snafus, and gaffes: the camera crew quitting in protest over work conditions; the prop gun that fired a bullet, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins; the mix of 500 blanks, dummy rounds and suspected live rounds collected on the set by Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, and even the custom T-shirts reportedly ordered by production staff mocking crew requests for hotel rooms. At this point, “Rust” producer and star Alec Baldwin may be alone in his assertion about his film with a reported budget of under $7 million: “We were a very, very well-oiled crew.”
The “Rust” reports document what might be generously described as gross mistakes and mismanagement, but “low budget does not equal unsafe. That’s not the conclusion to draw from this tragedy,” said Tom Nunan, who was an executive producer of “Crash” and “The Illusionist” and...

It’s been four years since filmmaker Ti West has released a film, with 2016’s “In a Valley of Violence,” being his last feature. Since then, the genre filmmaker has worked extensively in TV, on series such as “The Exorcist,” “Wayward Pines,” “Chambers,” and most recently, “Tales from the Loop.” But it appears he’s ready to hop back to feature filmmaking, with the upcoming film “X.”

The Western used to be the single most popular genre in Hollywood, and while the glory days are well in the past, there are still more than a few minor modern classics available for those willing to seek them out. Netflix seem to have warmly embraced the genre, too, and their library is full of both longtime favorites and new additions that all put their own twist on the established tropes and archetypes.
Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous 6 placed a comedic spin on the Western to bring in huge viewership numbers, while Scott Frank’s limited series Godless drew widespread critical acclaim and Ti West’s In a Valley of Violence quickly shot into the Top 10 most-watched list after being added to the streaming service.

The Western used to be one of the biggest – if not the biggest – genres in Hollywood, with tons of A-list stars and acclaimed filmmakers getting in on the fun. Nowadays, of course, we don’t see too many Westerns anymore, though every once in a while a gem like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma or the True Grit remake will pop up and remind us of why they’re so enjoyable.
Of course, many modern takes on the genre have tried to put their own spin on the tropes as well, with everything from big budget blockbuster The Lone Ranger to disappointing comic book adaptation Jonah Hex and even the animated Rango all attempting something new. Which didn’t always work out, but it’s still nice to see filmmakers trying to apply a fresh coat of paint to one of Hollywood’s oldest genres.

The Western used to be the biggest and most popular genre in Hollywood, reigning supreme for decades as almost every A-list star and respected filmmaker journeyed to the Old West. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in producing them as there used to be, but we have seen plenty of recent gems like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma, the True Grit remake and Open Range.
Instead of taking the old-fashioned route, a lot of modern Westerns have also sought to put their own twist on the tropes of the genre to decidedly mixed results, whether it be action blockbuster The Lone Ranger, comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, the animated Rango, the blood-soaked Red Hill, the star-studded Magnificent Seven update or South Korean Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad, the Weird. All of them brought something interesting to the table, but not all were successful.

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

The full list of everything that’s coming to Netflix in October has been released today and as we’re facing the prospect of a Halloween spent at home, the streaming site is making sure that we’ve got more than enough spooky content to keep us occupied. In fact, there’s a huge amount of new movies and TV shows arriving on the service next month as part of the “Netflix and Chills” season.
October 1st also delivers a lot of great newly licensed content, too, which you won’t want to miss. Sticking with the Halloween theme, though, the haul features a few horrors/thrillers including Cape Fear, House of 1000 Corpses and You Have Always Lived in the Castle. Then, on the 2nd, new original movie Vampires vs. the Bronx lands. And skipping ahead to the 7th, be sure to catch Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, Hubie Halloween.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.
We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. If you’re a fan of cinema, chances are, you’re also a fan of Ethan Hawke. The multi-hyphenate actor/writer/director has made a career out of exploring interesting avenues. As stated once before in a look at the man, there seems to be almost nothing that Hawke can not do. He’s directed films (including a documentary), written novels, starred in tiny indies, large scale movies, and everything in between. He’s likely best known for his collaborations with Richard Linklater, but they hardly define the man. A four time Academy Award nominee, he’s a perfect candidate for a Spotlight piece. After all, if he ever gets to a fifth Oscar nomination without a win, he’ll be hugely overdue for a statue. Hawke’s new film is, of course, First Reformed, which pairs him with filmmaker Paul Schrader. The movie is described cryptically as follows on...

Fred Durst, best known as the front man of rock band Limp Bizkit, has kicked off principal photography on his latest directorial effort “Moose,” which stars John Travolta in the lead role of a movie lover who turns into a crazy stalker.
“Moose” is written by Durst and Dave Bekerman and is based on Durst’s personal experiences dealing with a stalker years ago. Travolta’s titular character is obsessed with his favorite celebrity action hero (Devon Sawa of “Nikita”) and sets out to destroy his life when his fixation with him turns dangerous.
The film is shooting in Alabama and is backed by Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s Ambi Media Group. “Moose” marks Durst’s third directorial effort following “The Education of Charlie Banks” and “The Longshots.”
“There certainly is no shortage of amazing Fred Durst stories to tell, but this one in particular is unequivocally cinematic in how it plays out,...

Ethan Hawke is not known as an action hero. But then, neither was Liam Neeson before Taken. Hawke has done exciting movies like Training Day, The Purge and In a Valley of Violence, but he’s better known as the intellectual lover in Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight. In his new movie, 24 Hours to Live, director Brian Smrz said Hawke is really the one you see fighting bad guys and crashing cars. “For the most part, he wanted to do as much as he could,” Smrz said in a phone interview. “But he’s also smart enough to know that certain times we’d put...read more...

In just over 20 years in Hollywood, producer Jason Blum has amassed an amazing résumé as a producer, and Blumhouse Productions, the company he founded a little over ten years ago now, has become a juggernaut multi-media force to be reckoned with during that time.
Most horror fans know Blum from his involvement with numerous hit franchises, including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, and Ouija as well as his hand in the soon-to-be newly minted franchises that have sequels on the way: Creep, The Gallows, Unfriended, and Split (with Glass). Oh, and there’s also the matter of the numerous one-off projects he’s produced as well (genre or otherwise), including Get Out, In A Valley of Violence, The Gift, The Lords of Salem, Oculus, as well as the 2015 Oscar winner Whiplash.

The following essay was produced as part of the 2017 Nyff Critics Academy, a workshop for aspiring film critics that took place during the 55th edition of the New York Film Festival.
The western is an iconic genre tied to the very genesis of cinema itself, but it doesn’t have the currency it held decades ago. That’s why it’s such a thrill to see Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” and Valeski Grisebach’s “Western” — two highlights from this year’s New York Film Festival — reshape the genre from the ground up.
It’s only possible to appreciate that if you consider how far the genre has come. The western reigned Hollywood for decades—particularly from the ‘30s to the ‘60s. The genre’s appeal was that its unequivocal good vs. evil narrative could translate to any cultural zeitgeist. It wasn’t until Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns and...

John Travolta’s comeback in the 1990s is one of the more famous in American stardom. In the 1970s, Travolta became one of the biggest draws around thanks to “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever,” but spent much of the 1980s in a series of disappointments, culminating in the “Look Who’s Talking” franchise. But then, Quentin Tarantino came knocking with “Pulp Fiction,” and Travolta became an even bigger star than before, with a run of terrific movies including “Get Shorty,” “Face/Off,” “The Thin Red Line” and “Primary Colors.”
If that was a peak, recent years have been something of a trough: Travolta’s recent films have mostly, like similar actors of his vintage, been cheap VOD jobs with titles you’ve not heard of like “The Forger,” “Life On The Line,” “Criminal Activities” and “I Am Wrath” (with Ti West’s underrated, underseen “In A Valley Of Violence” a...

Karen Gillan is increasingly busy of late. The Scottish actress, known primarily for her time with Matt Smith’s Doctor in the guise of Amy Pond, has just completed the second of her Guardians of the Galaxy film as well as a leading role in the new Jumanji film with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. She starred in the underrated TV show Selfie, and has had small roles in films such as The Big Short and Ti West’s In a Valley of Violence. Now she takes on another challenge – her first film as director.
Tupperware Party, which she will star in as well as being the writer and director, is filming in Scotland right now, with Mt Hollywood Films producing. Gillan explains the film,
“Tupperware Party follows the story of a girl called Lucy who lives in Inverness. She is dealing with the suicide of her best friend.

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

There has been a renaissance of great B-movie westerns of late; this year gave us Ti West’s genre bender “In A Valley Of Violence,” and last year S. Craig Zahler‘s (side-splittingly?) unforgettable “Bone Tomahawk.” Similarly, the Southwest has served as the setting for a handful of timely border-related thrillers (“Sicario” being the best of them). It’s natural, then, that a film would come along and meld the two together: a modern-day smuggling drama hitched with the dusty small town, the greedy business tycoon, and the tired sheriff of the western.

Given all the political chatter about border control in this year’s *historic* Us presidential election, The Hollow Point stays savagely on-topic. Granted, most American citizens aren’t involved with ammo-running across country lines, but cartels are no joke – and neither is Gonzalo López-Gallego’s country-fried thriller. Social struggles tie weapons smuggling to impoverished Southern entrepreneurs, inviting boogeymen of Mexican descent to punish those who choose greed over safety. It’s a western standoff brought upon by evil, wicked men, all in the name of brutal consequence. Thugs living by a corrupt code, who we join just as bullet-slinging chickens come home to roost.
Patrick Wilson stars as the local sheriff of some forgotten U.S./Mexico border town, whose citizens are about to pay for a cartel deal gone wrong. Ken Mercey (David H. Stevens) was supposed to supply his contact with a surplus of ammunition, but his brother...

John Travolta used to be an A-list actor with an ongoing string of hits, but he hasn’t headlined a major Hollywood production since 2010 action film From Paris with Love barely broke even at the domestic box office. Ever since, Travolta has received steady work from lower-profile outings that typically receive limited, if any, theatrical release before debuting on video-on-demand. Already this year, the Oscar-nominated star of classics like Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction has appeared in action thriller I Am Wrath and Western In a Valley of Violence, alongside Ethan Hawke. Now, he leads his third 2016 release with Life on the Line.
The film centers on a team of linemen, the workers responsible for repairing power lines and maintaining the electrical grid. Travolta stars as Beau, the grizzled veteran of the group and uncle to orphaned niece Bailey (Kate Bosworth), who finds herself at a romantic crossroads with...

There is plenty to discuss in a weekend where Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween is crowned champion of the largest three-day weekend the 2016 box office has seen in over two months. Boo!, along with fellow new releases Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Keeping Up with the Joneses, generated 61.6% of the top twelve's overall gross of nearly $114 million, up 28% from last weekend and up 20% from last year. The weekend also saw a stellar opening for A24's Moonlight in limited release, delivering the largest opening per theater average of the year, and there are plenty of overseas results to discuss. Topping the weekend box office, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween brought in a stellar $27.6 million from 2,260 theaters ($12,212 PTA), the largest opening for a Madea branded feature and for a Tyler Perry-directed film overall since 2009's Madea Goes to Jail. As far as Madea-branded titles are concerned,...
