Director Chen Kaige is one of China’s most prominent and influential directors. Born Chen Aige in Beijing, he was the son of noted director Chen Huaiai, who directed a number of popular films during the 1950s and 1960s. He is also one of the central figures of the China’s Fifth Generation of filmmakers. These are the bunch who have gone through some of the most tumultuous time in China’s modern history: the chaotic Cultural Revolution, Great Famine, and some even joined the notorious Red Guard, where Chen once publicly denounced his own father.
He debuted with “Yellow Earth”. A visually impressive propaganda film that not many wanted to watch, but captured the attention of producer Hsu Feng (a veteran Taiwanese actress herself). Hence, they collaborated their next effort, “Farewell to My Concubine” (霸王别姬 ,1992). Perhaps this is the Chinese film most well-known to the Western audience.

The George-Lucas founded Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) is setting up shop in Australia, which will create employment opportunities for VFX artists.
The Disney-owned VFX and animation studio is establishing a facility at Disney’s Fox Studios Australia, If understands. That will be the San Francisco-based firm’s fourth outpost, joining Vancouver, London and Singapore.
Ilm executives were instrumental in persuading the Nsw Government to introduce a 10 per cent tax incentive for post, digital and visual effects (Pdv), matching South Australia and Queensland.
Starting on October 1 and requiring a minimum spend of $500,000 on Pdv in Nsw, the incentive has secured for the state post-production on Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley movie for Warner Bros. Pictures, which will shoot in Queensland.
The Pdv sector has known for several months that Ilm intended to set up a facility in Australia; the big question was the location.

As 2017 drew to a close, a wide variety of Chinese tentpoles led the last week of the year (Dec 25-31). Feng Xiaogang’s Youth, already in its third week, retained the overall No.1 position, while new release The Ex-File: The Return Of The Exes ruled the weekend.
With almost overwhelming praise from Chinese audiences, Youth delivered a hat trick and added $51.3m. The bittersweet coming-of-age drama was exceptionally resilient as it bounced back to the second place on Sunday after dropping to the fifth on Friday. After 17 days, it has amassed $169.5m, making it the eighth highest grossing film in 2017. It has also overtaken 2013’s Personal Tailor to become Feng’s top grossing film.

Australia’s biggest ever delegation to the Beijing Film Festival includes producer Alan Lindsay, who is seeking Chinese partners for the animated family film Piccolo The Dolphin Prince, written and directed by Greg Mclean, whose gory breakout film was Wolf Creek.
“It is Romeo and Juliet set in the world of dolphins,” said Lindsay, who is managing director of Vue Group. Since Mclean brought him the concept two years ago there has been considerable R&D on the dolphin characters and continued development on the underlying theme of the human impact on dolphins.
Lindsay will also be meeting with potential partners on Silver Spoon (working title), which he describes as “Downton Abbey set in Shanghai during the turbulent 1930s”. The live action drama inspired by real life focuses on a Chinese family that owns a lavish department store and once lived in Australia.
Lindsay regards China as his “second home” and has developed many partners there. His latest...
