Round-up of news from the sixth American Film Festival and Us in Progress showcase.
Shaz Bennett’s Alaska Is A Drag was the big winner at the fifth edition of the Us In Progress showcase during Wroclaw’s sixth American Film Festival (Oct 20-25).
The strand’s jury awarded post-production services worth up to $40,000 to the project. This will include colour correction from Chimney Poland, a score composed by Maciej Zielinski from Soundflower Studios, and a final sound mix from Toya Studios, as well as an offer to acquire TV rights from Ale Kino+.
The film, which is writer-director Bennett’s feature version of her 2012 short of the same name, was produced by her 4248 Productions with Melanie Miller’s Fishbowl Films.
The cast of the $700,000 project includes Matt Dallas, Jason Scott Lee, Margaret Cho, newcomer Martin L. Washington Jr. and Christopher O’Shea.

German distributors Neue Visionen and Salzgeber & Co. Medien each acquired a raft of new titles at this year’s European Film Market (Efm).
Berlin-based Neue Visionen continued the run of French titles in its line-up by securing the rights to Eric Besnard’s comedy The Sense Of Wonder and Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar’s tragicomedy Once In A Lifetime, currently riding high in the French box office, from TF1 International.
Last year saw Neue Visionen post over 3.5 million admissions at the German box office with the Christian Clavier comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings, and it will release its next French comedy, Jean-Paul Rouve’s Les Souvenirs with Serial star Chantal Lauby, in German cinemas on March 23.
In addition, Neue Visionen picked up Japanese film-maker Naomi Kawase’s CineMart 2014 project An-Sweet Red Bean Paste from German co-producer Twenty Twenty Vision Filmproduktion and Assad Fouladkar’s German-Lebanese comedy Halal Sex from producer Razor Film Produktion.

The festival’s 25th edition will feature a contribution from Ai Weiwei and competition titles including Whiplash, Nightcrawler and Foxcatcher.
The Stockholm International Film Festival (Nov 5-16) is to present its Achievement Award to Us actress Uma Thurman.
The Kill Bill star will will visit Stockholm to receive the prestigious Bronze Horse and meet the audience during an exclusive “Face2Face”.
Thurman will also take part in the inauguration ceremony, which will include the unveiling of an ice sculpture by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
Weiwei was a Stockholm jury member last year but since he wasn’t allowed to leave China, he sent an empty chair named ”The Chair for Non-attendance” as symbol of his absence.
He is still not allowed to leave China so will send a design that will be portrayed in the form of a large ice sculpture symbolising this years’ Spotlight theme - Hope.
