A simple modern romantic Korean melodramaIt's workable.
cremea18 August 2014
Sly and Single Again aka Cunning Single Lady is a16 episode KTV drama from early 2014.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Story: Young couple gets married and sets out on their perfect family life to come. Not so fast though! Husband abruptly quits his bread winning job to try to start his own business, wife tries to support him while running the household & paying the bills, tensions rise as they fall deeper in debt with no hope in sight, etc. Eventually, wife gets fed up with what little husband is offering to the marriage, so she divorces him.

A decade later, ex-husband has since become hugely successful with his business startup, and this makes ex-wife more than a little resentful. She sets out to get even and make his life miserable while planning to make him regret that he "let her get away". In order to accomplish her task, she takes a job as an intern at his company in order to get close to him and set her plan in motion. What she fails to realize though is that he's still bitter that she didn't stick by him years ago, and he's equally determined to now make her jealous of his new found fame & success.

The premise here is fairly modest and easy to follow. Two former spouses each still have some feelings, both good and bad, for the other. Now that they're older (and sometimes wiser), you observe their push and pull relationship unfold in typical K-drama fashion; first they try to get back at each other for past slights, then they get over it and start to move on, then they grow to understand each other better and consider starting over together if it's meant to be. It couldn't be any more simplistic or orderly, and as a result, the first part of the show is mostly comedy drama, second part is mainly regular drama, and final part is primarily melodrama with some romance and maybe love along the way.

Lee Min Jung & Joo Sang Wook play the two lead characters. Both performers are in their prime and they have no problems handling their respective roles. Joo Sang Wook is a highly amusing just to look at when he's portraying his younger self, complete with atrocious hair style. He's pretty effective throughout as his modern day eligible bachelor self, who's still a bit dorky and unsure of his feelings underneath. Lee Min Jung has primarily been taking on a number of these similarly themed K-drama female roles in the last several years, and she is quite good at this stuff; she has a nice comedic touch to go along with all the other attributes expected of a lead actress in this type of role.

Potentially standing in the way of our estranged couple at every turn is the 3 stereotypical chaebol family members that comprise this story's antagonists & other potential love interests; they include the self-serving family patriarch with typical ego & pride, the carefree handsome young son who likes the female lead, and the wounded older daughter who likes the male lead. They are all pretty standard characters for a K-drama; the Dad is somewhat emotionally distant and primarily obsessed with his own legacy, the son is perpetually stuck at the age of a boy trying to become a man, and the daughter can't get over a tragedy that happened to her in the past. Each of these family members is intended to be a sympathetic figure to some degree while simultaneously irking the viewer on numerous occasions.

The first couple episodes focus on the leads as their younger selves, and are used mostly for background and setup purposes. Then, the two leads get re-acquainted with one another again in the present where the rest of the series takes place. Things are kept pretty lighthearted and are rolling along pretty well for a while until the tone of the series begins to shift, and it's all mostly melodrama from there on in. The tonal shift was not unexpected, but it just reeks of too much familiarity that suggests it's coasting down the standard K-drama checklist of scenes to accomplish in order to wrap up and move on to another show, and that is my primary problem with this show.

I love the Hallyu entertainment industry in most all its forms, but I'm often baffled by how reluctant they seem to be to take a chance on something new, particularly when they would clearly be so good at it. This is especially true when it comes to Korean TV shows, as you basically have variety/reality programming and stuff like this show, and very little else. I know these shows are under enormous pressure to simply churn out copy, hit a certain ratings number, and "cover all the bases" as best as possible...but, I can't help but think this show would have been fantastic as primarily a romantic-comedy from start to finish, and, I know I'm not the only one who thinks this. There must surely be a market for KTV viewers who could do without another cookie cutter melodrama that insists on falling back on typical characters and clichés in order to tell a story. And, if given a chance, I'm sure the writers of this show could have figured out a way to include an appropriate amount of love, loss, & melodrama without invoking the same tired and silly antagonist & love interest angles.

Summary: I don't mean to come across as being too harsh on this particular show, It's not that bad at all, and I will recommend it. But, it is one of those K-dramas that makes me long for the day when the heavens align to allow for each particular KTV show to just do what it does best, and leave the "formulaic/one size fits all/status quo" method of storytelling behind.

Bottom Line: 7 out of 10 stars on the K-drama scale.

A cute modern love story
hjalsayegh25 February 2019
The synopsis of this one is misleading making it seem like a revenge tale.

Instead it's a story about a couple that really cared for each other but went through hard times that forced them apart then meet again three years later. The husband is rich and successful, the wife is bitter that he found all this success while sticking her with his debt when he left.

At first the wife is viewed as irrational and bitter while the husband acts like he's moved on. It took up until mid season for them to make the wife more sympathetic which is weird in this kind of drama.

The ending is a bit rushed. it would have benefited from stretching it out over a few episodes rather than the confused tying of loose ends that happened but over all it's a sweet, romantic tale with a couple that really acted like they've been married for years.

Good Enough
PennyReviews12 September 2018
Cunning Single Lady sounds like a revenge drama, about a dynamic famme fatal who is ready to take down everyone who stands in her way etc etc. However, it is actually about a woman who is too sweet and too good and too much of a victem. Minus: -The story got annoying at some point Possitives: -Good acting -even though it's not what the title suggests, it is actually a decent drama -has some cute aspects So, 6.5 out of 10.

The impact of divorce is well handled - the later romance comic parts aren't so good
phd_travel18 August 2020
The serious aspect dealing with the impact of divorce is well handled. From the parents reactions, to the stigma of divorce on the divorced woman it's all quite well incorporated. The most moving parts are the way they each remembered the hurt and betrayal first but didn't think about the better times till later. The suffering each endured and struggles are well portrayed. The way they get each other is hilarious. The later comic romance parts are less successful especially where Joo Sang Wook acts in love are painful. He isn't the most handsome actor in K drama but he is a believable CEO. The female lead Lee Min Jung is quite endearing. She keeps the role quite sympathetic and not annoying. She doesn't act cute and silly unlike some other rom com heroines. There is a drag towards the end. Initially I liked the characters of the secondary leads more. An early breakout role for Seo Kang Joon before his leading roles as the likeable young guy in love with her. He was too good for her. The sister's story is quite sad but her freakout at the end isn't in keeping with her dignified personality from earlier. After all no one led her on. That is a weak part. Anyway the inevitable happy end feels a bit of an anti climax.

More complex and intriguing than expected

Warning: Spoilers
Na Ae-ra (Lee Min-jung) grew up believing she was born to be only pretty and not smart. While working at her family's restaurant, she falls in love with Cha Jung-woo (Joo Sang-wook), a geeky engineering graduate student studying to enter a civil service job. Na Ae-ra wants to become a housewife, and after Jung-woo promises that she will be, they get married. During their 100th day wedding celebration, Jung-woo announces that he has quit his job because he has an idea for a business. Jung-woo's businesses keep failing and Ae-ra struggles to keep them afloat by working multiple jobs. After secretly suffering a miscarriage from the stress of being the sole breadwinner and living in poverty, Ae-ra divorces Jung-woo after four years of marriage. Three years after the divorce, Ae-ra discovers that Jung-woo has become fabulously successful and wealthy, while she is still paying debts that accrued during their marriage. The fun begins when Ae-ra schemes for revenge, with Jung-woo believing that Ae-ra wants him back because he has become wealthy.

This was not at all what I expected. I thought the ex-wife would be coming from a position of power at the outset and she really was not. I should be used to the premise not fully giving me insight into the complexities of the story line. it is part of what I love about Asian dramas. From synopsis I expected this to be similar to some American shows I have seen where exes get revenge - and it was not like that at all. I was also surprised at the sympathy I felt for the "villainous" characters and the unexpected evolution of some. I liked the way it explored the many levels of miscommunication that can go on in a marriage and the qualities that someone who should know you better than anyone might fail to see. It was moving, complex, but still light and refreshing.

It has its good and bad ways...
Irishchatter21 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
*Just to note for those who want to watch it on Netflix, it won't be available after the 10th of February 2021**

Anyways so I finished this kromcom in a matter of full two days. I found out about this drama from Stewie on the Drama Obsess website which was based on the " Office Romance Korean Dramas You Can't Resist"list. I'll tell you how I felt in bullet points for the good and the bad while watching this kromcom:-

The good *Our main couple:- I liked the fact that the drama focused on the romance development between the two leads Na Ae Ra and Cha Jung Woo. It's interesting how both were completely opposites like Na Ae Ra is open, hot tempered and doesn't take any bs from anyone. Whereas Cha Jung Woo is an intelligent caring guy who wants to move on from their failed marriage but still loves Na Ae Ra. It was even heartbreaking to hear about the miscarriage, it was a pretty emotional experience. Also yes they are both very attractive and that kiss man was a delight to see😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

* Na Ae Ra's father:- I really thought that guy who played the father did a good job at being pretty likeable in the series. You definitely would like a dad like him...seriously he is a shipper like myself with wanting our main leads back together!

*Mr Gam- I honestly would've liked to know who played this loveable eccentric dude like seriously he may be a typical "over the top" colleague but he was just so cute how he always thought of his family and he does care about his colleagues so much! I wish he was part of the main cast tbh 😔

The bad Love triangle cliche- I was always frustrated with the Kook siblings going after the main leads. At first I seriously liked Kook Seung Hyeon and Kook Yeo Jin cause I thought they were interesting characters. Yeo Jin was a car crash victim who lost her husband and has a bionic leg. Kook Seung Hyeon is an attractive bubbly guy who dreams of being an artist and yet doesn't give a monkeys ass about working in the company. He just wants Na Ae Ra. I just wish the Kook siblings weren't the usual cliche "third wheelers" like the pair of them turned out to be pricks at the end of it. They are better off to be a couple themselves rather than siblings seriously. It would be great to see another couple tbh....

The snobby co workers- god I even hated the co workers as well as the siblings. They just ultimately keep downgrading the female lead like it was legit sexism from a viewpoint just because she was a woman and admired Seung Hyeon cause he's a fella. It was just so uncomfortable to see like it was just urgh they should've written them off the story!!!!

The karaoke scene - I honestly would have rather to hear the characters voices like sticking in a random song from someone else and the characters not in sync with the song, it was just messy man! Like cmon, they could have at least let us hear the singing voices of Lee Min Jung, Joo Sang Wook and Kim Gyu Ri!!!!!

So overall folks it was alright nice enough show to waste time on but I wish it was developed properly by giving us something at least different instead of the old fashioned cliches. That's why I'm giving it a 6/10 rating and that was mainly thanks to the main leads tbh....

Good show Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching this show and I would recommend it. I was a bit hesitant after reading the reviews as I got some mixed feelings about it. But I would recommend it as it's: funny, entertaining maybe a bit unrealistic, but nonetheless worth watching.

There are a lot of really funny one-liners in the show as well as some really good discussion scenes. It's about a failed marriage so you can imagine that each side blames the other. It is worth the watch, it makes you laugh and tugs at your emotions and makes you wonder how could one person get in so much trouble.

Spoiler Alert: The show starts really well, each episode builds for the next but it does fall apart in the final episode. Sure you expect them to get back together again, but it was too easy a re-connection.

First they tried to make it as a Steve Jobs scenario, he loses job and then creates another company (Jobs created Pixar) and then the company merges. But they ran through this concept very quickly and without much detail as to what's happening.

Next the re-connection with all the individuals (plots, sub-plots) was so distant. What I mean it was, every one go to your neutral corners, no interaction between the players in the final episode. No connection between the different stories in the final scene. Every story (scenario) ends by itself not related to any of the others in the show. By bringing all the stories together it would have made for a bigger happy ending.

Cute Love Story - Marriage/Divorce/Marriage
PalmBeachG20 January 2023
I enjoyed this K-Drama but I thought it should be called The Cunning Single Man instead as it seemed to me more of the Leading Male that was more cunning trying to get the female back more than her trying to get him back. I felt she was trying to get independent and work hard at her job, after all - she gave up everything to support him while he was pursuing his dream inook her over to instead of taking care of her own education. There were some sad moments (baby) and some cruel moments (like when he took the FL over to the house that they planned and then he built). All in all, a cute ending.

Warning: Spoilers
The story is quite atypical. Divorce and remarried. The male lead is not handsome, but acting is ok. No complaint on female lead. The plot is sophisticsted and well made. A movie worth a watch.
