Following last year’s Cult Hero, director Jesse Thomas Cook and writer Tony Burgess are back with their fifth collaboration The Hyperborean which played at this year’s Blood in the Snow Film Festival. And right from the opening animation depicting some fictional strangeness afflicting the nonfictional McClure Arctic Expedition, it’s obvious this is as strange as anything they’ve given us before.
Diana sits at a table in a large conference room with Mr. da Silva and Ms. Ladouceur (Marcia Alderson; Cult Hero), two lawyers and eventually Mr. Denbok, a crisis manager, or spin doctor as they used to be called, who represent her late father Hollis’ (Tony Burgess) corporate interests. Their first question “How did your father die?...

Last year, Ashley Greene (the Twilight saga) and Shawn Ashmore (Adam Green’s Frozen) shared the screen in the Netflix-released thriller Aftermath. Now Deadline reports that Greene and Ashmore have been reunited on the set of the supernatural horror film It Feeds, which is currently in production.
It Feeds will tell the story of a young girl who insists that a malevolent entity is feeding on her. Greene’s character is “a clairvoyant therapist who must confront her own personal demons to save the girl before she is taken completely.” Ashmore is playing “the anguished father, desperately struggling to protect his daughter.”
Deadline doesn’t name the director of It Feeds or the screenwriter, but they do mention that this film is the first in what is planned to be a ten-film slate of genre projects that’s coming our way from Productivity Media Inc and Black Fawn Films.

Alexandra Keddie, Drew Weston and Gemma Bird Matheson in ‘The Housemate.’
Frustrated with the scarcity of job offers, two years ago young actors Gemma Bird Matheson and Alexandra Keddie decided to launch their own production company, Chips & Gravy Films.
Their maiden production was The Housemate, an affectionate take on The Bachelor. They spent several thousand dollars of their own money to make a 4-minute teaser, in which they played friends who are searching for the housemate of their dreams, posted it online and got 260,000 views in the first week.
So they sent the teaser to Rick Kalowski, then the ABC’s head of comedy, who called them within 30 minutes and quickly commissioned a series of 6 x 5′ episodes for iview.
Since then the duo have created four or five projects which are in development with Screen Australia, while Matheson also performs in plays (currently the Griffin Theatre Company’s Superheroes...

"She's seen so much death here..." Scream Factory has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror thriller I'll Take Your Dead, the latest film from Canadian horror filmmaker Chad Archibald. This originally premiered at two Canadian film festivals last year - Calgary and Toronto After Dark - and is getting a limited release in May. The concept for I'll Take Your Dead is pretty twisted - a guy who cleans up dead bodies at a farm house gets one dumped there. But this woman isn't actually dead, and so patches and locks her up until he can figure out what to do. The two begin to develop a very unusual respect for each other, but the killers come back to finish the job. Aidan Devine stars, with Ava Preston, Jess Salgueiro, Brandon McKnight, and Ari Millen. Looks like this has some creepy twists and turns. Here's the official trailer...

Director Chad Archibald first came to my attention with the slasher that isn’t half as popular as it should be, The Drownsman (it could easily be an ongoing franchise). He followed that up with the intriguing Ejecta and then the gross-out body horror of Bite. The Heretics is the latest offering from a director that is not afraid to shake things up.
The Heretics takes what is a simple story of a woman being kidnapped and turns it completely on its head. What we also get are cults, suicides, crazy girlfriends and some sort of demon. That’s quite a lot to pack into an hour and twenty five minutes. But pack it in it does and the time flies by… Pretty much jumping straight into...

Canadian horror specialists Black Fawn Films have been slowly but surely producing genre product for a number of years. As a survivor of Septic Man‘s sewer-sludge yuckiness, I saw Bite‘s disgusting reputation not as a warning, but as an invitation. What’s a little gross-out body horror capable of, really? Sure, Fantasia Festival attendees reported that Chad Archibald’s metamorphosis tale caused viewers to “faint, puke, and need medical attention,” but after watching it myself, I question the constitution of said fainters. Maybe it’s just because I’ve witnessed the worst of the worse (an occupational hazard), or because I’ve been blessed with my father’s iron gullet, but Bite never sent me reaching for a barf bag. While this might disappoint true masochists, Bite doesn’t need perverse gimmicks to win over horror fans – there’s a story worth watching all in itself, even if it won’t make you vomit.

While on her bachelorette getaway in the tropics, Casey is bitten by an unknown organism and after she returns home, she realizes her bite is transforming her into something monstrous and beyond anything she could have ever imagined.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Archibald about what inspired the story of Bite, the challenges of keeping his body horror project feeling unexpected and unique, collaborating with newcomer Begovic on the film, and much more.

Chad Archibald, producer of Antisocial (a personal fave) turns his hand to directing with a film which is a bold attempt to create an all-new horror villain in The Drownsman. And hey, what’s not to like about another horror film starring the wonderful Michelle Mylett?
This time round Mylett plays Madison who, after almost drowning in a lake, develops debilitating hydrophobia and with good reason. It’s not just water the frightens Madison, it’s the supernatural entity that continually haunts her through it, a rancid ghostly entity trying to pull her into his dark, wet world. Chad Archibald has been making quiet a name for himself in genre cinema (and in my movie collection) over the past few years, whether it’s producing awesome action movies like Bounty Hunters, starring WWE’s Trish Stratus; or more horrific fare like Hellmouth and the fantastic Antisocial. More recently Archibald has also directed a number of horror hits, including last years Frightfest film The Drownsman and this years cause célèbre, Bite. Which has, if you believe the hype, been causing a furore at screenings around the world, with walkouts and vomiting amongst other audience afflictions…
Bite tells the story of bride-to-be Casey, while on her hen party getaway to exotic Costa Rica, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect while bathing in an idyllic jungle pool.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Black Fawn Films. Director: Chad Archibald. Writers: Jayme Laforest, Chad Archibald. Cast: Elma Begovic, Annette Wozniak, Jordan Gray, Denise Yuen. Director Chad Archibald (The Drownsman) is guaranteed to make your skin crawl in his icky entertaining horror film, Bite! What begins as a seemingly banal scenario with stereotypical females on a bachelorette party vacation, turns out to be a gripping grim tale of transformation, betrayal and revenge. Archibald is clever in setting his audience up with a potential snore fest, then creeping in to deliver a strong story with good characters and a healthy dose of gooey gore. Somewhat reminiscent of Cronenberg's The Fly (1986), though revolving around infection not experiment, this film belongs inside the category of “body horror.” That said, it nearly crosses over into a creature-feature, and dips its feet into the realm of horror comedy. Whatever you want to call it,...

We love Fantasia because Bite is the sort of body horror movie you can’t get in many other festival experiences. Directed by Chad Archibald (The Drownsman, Ejecta), Bite is the story of a young woman turned into a mutant freak by something as innocent as an animal bite. Here’s the official synopsis:
While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she’s able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite.

As Canadian horror film fans, we have a strange affinity for body horror films, owing much of course to our forefather Mr Cronenberg. As such, there is a crop of young Canadian horror filmmakers out there that just love making us squirm uneasily in our seats as they put their characters through the genetic wringer. Adding to that horrific chorus is filmmaker Chad Archibald (Antisocial, The Drownsman) and one of his latest films, Bite, which will have its World Premiere at Fantasia on July 29th in the Salle J.A de Sève.While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. In The Drownsman, now out on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay, Ry Barrett superbly plays the titular antagonist, and we caught up with the actor to discuss the 1980s horror movie villains that influenced his performance, his thoughts on reprising the role, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to chat about The Drownsman. I thought it was a fun and frightening film with a 1980s-esque vibe.
Ry Barrett: It is definitely a throwback to those kinds of movies. That is exactly what drew me to it. I’m staring at a stack of my DVDs right now and they’re full of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Candyman—all those sorts of characters I grew up with and always loved to get freaked out by. The second I heard of the opportunity to play a character like that, I was all over it.
Did any horror movie villains influence your portrayal of Sebastian Donner,...
