Update: Universal/Warner Bros/Amblin’s Twisters positively blasted past forecasts domestically this session. While the international box office result is pretty close to where we saw it coming in, there’s no denying this is much more of a domestic play.
The global cume, largely boosted by domestic’s heartland turnout this weekend, is now $123.2M. Universal has domestic rights and Warner is handling overseas where $27.1M was wrangled from 76 markets this frame. That’s after early release in 38 markets last session. This weekend saw a 30% drop overall overseas, for a $42.7M offshore cume.
Latin America had great holds at Colombia (+8%), Argentina (+1%), Mexico (-22%), Peru (-23%) and Brazil (-31%). Australia was down just 21%. Japan and and Korea are still to release.
Nostalgia is not so prevalent for the original Twisters overseas, but with good social and critical scores plus holidays, maybe we see some uptick ahead. That’s gonna...

If you remember six years ago, A Simple Favor became an unexpected sleeper hit, both among the audiences and among the critics. Paul Feig’s adaptation of the Darcey Bell novel starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively was a movie that surprised everyone, with the critics praising its many intriguing elements, while the audiences loved it. It also earned $97.6 million on a $20 million budget, becoming a sleeper hit at the 2018 box office. The movie has recently arrived on Netflix, and the streaming service has confirmed that it has become a proper hit for them, earning a Top 10 spot on the weekly ratings chart.
This is certainly great news for the movie, as the sequel is currently being filmed, having been postponed several times earlier, so the fact that the original is still in demand certainly helps the production and indicates that the sequel, if done right, might also be a...

Writer-director S. Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk”) is set to reunite with his “Dragged Across Concrete” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99” star Vince Vaughn and Oscar winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) for upcoming crime thriller “The Bookie & the Bruiser.”
Anton will introduce the film to international distributors at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes. UTA Independent Film Group and Range Media Partners arranged the financing and will be representing the North American distribution rights.
Set in 1959 New York, “The Bookie & the Bruiser” follows a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas during WWII and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind. Uninterested in taking orders from bosses or playing by the rules of polite society, the two friends partner up as a bookmaker and an enforcer and...

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

With a solid offshore hold, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is closing in on $500M globally. The overseas weekend brought in $51.2M across 73 markets, a 40% drop versus last session (-37% excluding China). The international box office cume through Sunday is $289.4M, and worldwide the running total is $494.7M. The latter figure means the film has already surpassed Villeneuve’s 2021 Dune worldwide.
Internationally in like-for-like markets and at today’s exchange rates, the Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment sequel is tracking 67% ahead of 2021’s Dune, 47% bigger than Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 20% over Godzilla Vs Kong, 7% above Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and 3% ahead of both Ready Player One and The Batman.
Japan was the new bow this session with $1.7M including previews; that’s 22% above the opening weekend of Dune.
Villeneuve recently visited China in support of Dune 2, and the sophomore frame there added $9.8M for a local cume of $36.1M.

Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two held strongly in its sophomore session at the international box office, adding $81M to handily cross the $200M overseas milestone, and reaching $367.5M globally.
We’ll dig further into Dune 2’s second frame below, including its China start. In the meantime, let’s look at what’s new this weekend.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 came out kicking as it begins a staggered overseas rollout. The fourquel opened to $22.2M in 41 markets which rep just 23% of the international landscape, and put the global debut at $80.5M. Spain was the only major in this first suite as the Jack Black-starrer will continue adding markets in the coming weeks to align with holiday play; it goes to China on March 22.
The offshore start, excluding previews, is bigger than Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 in like-for-like markets at today’s rates.

When Chris Wedge's animated film "Ice Age" first came out in 2002, it was considered novel and striking for many reasons. It was set in prehistoric times yet eschewed dinosaurs in favor of megafauna living in the Pleistocene Epoch. The three main characters were a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), a smilodon named Diego (Denis Leary), and a mammoth named Manfred aka Manny (Ray Romano), and they were engaged in a great migration to flee the oncoming Ice Age. The plot of their first movie apes John Ford's 1946 Western "3 Godfathers," as the three animals discover a human infant that they must keep safe and deliver back to the then-evolutionarily-novel homo sapiens living nearby.
The design of "Ice Age" was striking, aiming for broad, stylized characters that were markedly different from the friendly, big-eyed protagonists of Disney pictures. It certainly helped that the "Ice Age" movies featured a character named Scrat,...

Modern Family finally wrapped up its run on ABC in 2020, but actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s career continues to flourish. He went from an accomplished stage actor to a beloved sitcom actor, and now he’s bringing those comedy chops to film. The 47-year-old actor, long well-liked in Hollywood, is finally entering the third act of his career.
That third act was pushed forward by Ferguson’s husband. The pair have become something of a power couple, a successful producer and a talented actor elevating one another. So why did the Modern Family star spend so long lying about how they first met?

What began as an unlikely friendship between three misfit creatures — a sloth, a mammoth believing he was the last of his kind and a saber-toothed tiger that doesn’t want to be violent — in “Ice Age” (2002) has stretched into a storied saga of the trio’s journey through all kinds of realms as warming slowly melts their world across five “Ice Age” movies and one spinoff.

Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Manny the mammoth (Ray Romano) find the child, and Diego the sabertooth (Denis Leary) joins them on their quest to return him to his father, abandoning his own pack who hunted the kid in the first place.

From the very start, “Ice Age” transported audiences to a world of enchantment and hilarity. It has since become one of the most beloved and top-grossing animated franchises in cinematic history.
It’s easy to see why due to its thrilling adventures, lighthearted humor, meaningful messages, and iconic characters like Sid (John Leguizamo), Manny (Ray Romano), Ellie (Queen Latifah), Diego (Denis Leary), Shira (Jennifer Lopez) and Scrat(Chris Wedge).
The 2002 blockbuster hit “Ice Age” marked the pioneering, feature-length debut of Blue Sky Studios. This success spawned a series of Ice Age films and short animations that extended beyond the original story while introducing lovable new characters to viewers worldwide.
Unfortunately, Blue Sky Studios was forced to close its doors in 2021 after Disney acquired their former distribution partner 20th Century Fox. The good news is that Disney remains committed to continuing the beloved “Ice Age” saga, so fans can expect more...

There was a time when a sequel set in space represented the creative nadir of any film franchise. Movies like Ice Age: Collision Course, Airplane II: The Sequel, and the James Bond outing Moonraker proved one small step for man was also one giant leap for far too many fans. But then in 2021, something happened. Fast & Furious boldly went where no Corona-drinking, backyard barbecue-loving, street racer had gone before.
After years of jokes, F9 saw director Justin Lin do the unthinkable and send Dom Toretto’s “family” into space. This time, however, there was no significant blowback on the seemingly critic-proof action franchise, with F9 going on to make over 700 million dollars while earning plaudits for its continuing ability to defy the laws of physics at the box office.
Now, with audiences increasingly happy to disregard logic for entertainment’s sake, and studios forever thirsting for an opportunity to resurrect popular film properties,...

The “Ice Age” series began in 2002 with Ice Age, a mildly entertaining if not completely forgettable film which told the story of three unlikely friends trying to survive an extinction event with one another. "It's a bad time for a tropical vacation." 20th Century / Disney+ have debuted the full-length official trailer for an animated sequel titled The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, arriving in January. We posted the first teaser just a few months ago. The first Ice Age opened in 2002, then they made four mediocre sequels, most recently Ice Age: Collision Course in 2016. Blue Sky Studios shut down after Disney bought Fox and the pandemic finished them off for good. But they're still keeping the franchise going. Get ready for another wacky prehistoric comedy! Simon Pegg is back as the voice of Buck, joined by Vincent Tong as Crash, Aaron Harris as Eddie, & Utkarsh Ambudkar as Orson. Disney has released the first official trailer for “Encanto,” a new musical featuring eight new songs from “Moana” and “Hamilton” composer Lin-Manuel Miranda. The 60th animated feature from the studio will showcase the voice talents of Stephanie Beatriz, who recently pulled focus as comedic relief in the Warner Bros.-produced adaptation of Miranda’s “In The Heights.” Set in Colombia, “Encanto” is directed by “Zootopia” helmers Byron Howard and Jared Bush, alongside newcomer co-director Charise Castro Smith. Unlike “Moana” and his contributions to the upcoming “The Little Mermaid” update, the “Encanto” score is written entirely by Miranda.
Here’s what we know about the plot so far, per Disney: “‘Encanto’ tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed...

“A Little Late With Lilly Singh” will have a whole new look for Season 2 — and a new writing staff, including Chelsea Davison as head writer. She replaces Sean O’Connor.
Staff writers for Season 2 are Vannessa Jackson, Sabeeh Jameel, Romen Borsellino, Nimesh Patel, Neuli Handa and Natasha Vaynblat. Neil Punsalan is showrunner.
They’re all new — the only carryover writers from Season 1 to Season 2 are Singh and Davison.
The second season of the (very) late-night show will be relocated to “a Los Angeles-based house,” NBC said on Tuesday.
We checked — it’s not Lilly’s home.
“Swapping out a traditional stage for a Los Angeles-based house as the show’s location will give Lilly more space to break the rules and embrace imperfection,” the show’s press release reads.

With a long weekend now upon us, folks are no doubt going to be seeking out fresh content to dig into and though today – and the next few days – are actually a bit light on new movies and TV shows when it comes to the major streaming services, there’s still some stuff worth checking out.
Of course, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, in particular, just delivered massive drops to their subscribers on the first of the month, with each platform bringing a ton – and we do mean a ton – of new arrivals. So, it’s understandable that July 3rd, 4th and 5th may be a bit on the light side.
But again, there’s enough here that you should find something to satisfy you. And if you don’t, well, like we just said, July 1st brought with it more than enough to keep you busy.

Streaming services have been doing an excellent job of keeping everyone busy as we all continue quarantining, and Disney Plus has been no exception. June was a particularly strong month for the platform with the additions of huge titles like Tarzan, Tarzan 2 and Avengers: Infinity War.
Meanwhile, July is already shaping up to be fantastic, too, with upcoming drops like the musical Hamilton, animated film Ice Age: Collision Course and classic sports movies like The Mighty Ducks and The Big Green. Of course, when Disney Plus giveth, Disney Plus taketh away, and the start of July means we’ve lost a few awesome films as well that some fans are sure to miss.
One of the biggest losses is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Johnny Depp reprises his signature role as Jack Sparrow in this fourth installment of the popular franchise that acts as a standalone followup to 2007’s At World’s End.

Despite only launching in November, Disney Plus has already brought in nearly 55 million subscribers, who’ve been enjoying all of their content hailing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, Pixar, almost their entire back catalogue of animated films and much, much more.
However, it’s fair to say that when it comes to original material, Disney Plus hasn’t been bringing us very much. Sure, The Mandalorian was a major hit, but apart from that, none of their in-house projects have really stirred up any buzz. Unless, of course, you want to count Artemis Fowl, which has been making waves for all the wrong reasons.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will be improving on that front anytime soon, either. The Mouse House has just announced what’s headed our way in July and as you can see below, the list is lacking when it comes to buzzy original titles.

A Little Late with Lilly Singh will return to NBC for a second season. This comes after the late-night talk show finished airing its first 97-episode run last week.
Singh filmed the first season, which included guests such as Mindy Kaling, Charlize Theron, Malala Yousafzai, Jessica Alba, over a three-month period shooting two episodes a day to accommodate her other ventures. Deadline understands that Singh and the producers will determine production dates on season two when local authorities and NBC feel it is safe to do so, rather than record remotely.
The show is produced by Universal Television and Singh’s Unicorn Island Productions and replaced Last Call With Carson Daly as the third show in NBC’s late-night slot. Singh is the first person of Indian and South Asian descent to host a broadcast network late-night talkshow.

Freshman late-night talk show “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” has been renewed for a second season at NBC, the network announced Wednesday.
“Lilly is an incredible talent. ‘A Little Late’ has brought an expanding global audience to NBC and we look forward to another season of her unique showmanship and style,” said Katie Hockmeyer, executive vice president, late night programming, NBC Entertainment.
The first season of Singh’s series premiered in September 2019, replacing Carson Daly’s “Last Call with Carson Daly.” All episodes were taped during the fourth quarter of 2019, instead of going live-to-tape daily, as many other late-night series do. The first season was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for the episode entitled “Lilly Is Struggling to Date Women.”
Singh is the first openly bisexual woman to host a late-night talk show on a broadcast network. She is also the first person of Indian and South Asian descent to do so.

Legendary Entertainment has hired Sirena Liu as the CEO of its China subsidiary, Legendary East. Legendary is the studio behind the “Pacific Rim,” “Jurassic World” and the “Godzilla” movie franchises.
Liu was most recently managing director for Twentieth Century Fox’s China office, a post she’d held since October 2015 until mid 2019. The post became redundant following Fox’s acquisition by Disney.
After a stumbling start in 2011, Legendary East was established as a wholly-owned subsidiary based in China. Its mission was to produce large-scale local films using Hollywood expertise and globally-targeted co-productions that would avoid China’s film import restrictions in their home market.
In 2016, Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda spent the eye-watering sum of $3.5 billion to acquire the Burbank-based parent company, in one of the largest cross-border deals of its kind in the cultural sector. The mega deal caught the attention of Chinese authorities, which moved in mid-2017 to...

Fox released the first trailer for their new animated spy action comedy Spies in Disguise starring Will Smith (Men in Black), Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Karen Gillan (Avengers: Infinity War).
Smith takes on the role of Lance Sterling, one of the coolest, most charming, and super-skilled spies in the world. He has a partner who is a young scientific genius that creates the gadgets that Lance uses on his mission, and in the trailer we see that he ends up transforming Lance into a pigeon.
Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is... not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have...

This weekend sees the release of Sony's animated feature Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, marking the first time a film in the franchise has hit theaters during the summer season, and the latest Dwayne Johnson actioner Skyscraper from Universal and Legendary. Also keep your eyes on Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You, which is expanding nationwide and looking to secure a spot in the weekend top ten after a strong limited debut last weekend. At the top of the box office, look for Sony Animation's Hotel Transylvania 3 to continue the franchise's tradition of opening over $40 million. The first two films in the franchise both set opening weekend records for the month of September at the time of their release, and while this third installment won't be doing the same for the month of July, industry expectations are for an opening anywhere from $38-44 million. The big test the film...

Perhaps with a real estate eye toward a trade up to bigger digs more commensurate with the financial firepower of someone who rakes in an estimated $500,000 per episode for his co-starring role on the long-running hit sitcom “Modern Family,” Los Angeles-based actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson is looking to sell his New York City pied-à-terre for $1.495 million. The eclectically decorated apartment, which carries maintenance charges of $1,877 per month, is also available completely furnished for an additional, undisclosed amount. The ginger-haired five-time Emmy nominee, who voiced the Shangri Llama character in the 2016 blockbuster animated film “Ice Age: Collision Course,” and his prominently eye-browed attorney/bedding designer husband Justin Mikita purchased the approximately 900-square-foot one-bedroom and two-bathroom co-operative unit in early 2015 for $1,232,500.

NBC has set the main cast for its upcoming comedy pilot “Bright Futures,” Variety has learned.
Emily Ratajkowski, Lilly Singh, Shameik Moore, Jimmy Tatro, and Calum Worthy will all star in the single-camera project, which follows a group of friends all stumbling through the transition from the clueless, immature twentysomethings they are now to the successful professionals they’re destined to be. In addition, Lisa Kudrow will serve as the show’s narrator.
Ratajkowski will play Sarah, described as a girl-next-door type but also with a behind-the-ear tattoo. She can just as easily bro out with the guys as she can be the girliest girl. Ratajkowski is a model and actress known for her roles in films like “Gone Girl” and “We Are Your Friends.” She is repped by UTA and Untitled Entertainment.
Singh will play Sid. One of the roommates, she’s a recent med school graduate and who...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered on expectations, debuting with the second largest opening weekend of all-time and propelling the box office to the third largest weekend ever based on estimates. In an attempt at counter-programming, Fox's Ferdinand got off to a bit of a slow start against the might of Star Wars as well as the continued strong performance of Pixar's Coco as it fell below Mojo's expectations, though the studio is optimistic when it comes to the film's future. With an estimated $220 million, Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered the second largest opening weekend ever behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which debuted with $247.9 million back in 2015. Last Jedi got off to a strong start on Thursday night with the second largest preview gross ever of $45 million and became only the second film to ever gross over $100 million on opening day resulting in the second largest opening day ever,...

European animation films offer a "darker" arthouse alternative to Hollywood fare and can become global hits by pushing the boundaries of "new ways of storytelling," a leading film marketing executive says.
Mathias Noschis, who as founder of London-based Alphapanda has developed online PR and social media campaigns for Hollywood films, including Lego Ninjago, Kung Fu Panda 3, Ice Age: Collision Course, Toy Story 3 and Rango, says European animation is perfectly positioned to take on the world.
