A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.
Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary
If bustin’ makes you feel good, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary should be at the top of your queue. Imagine Sam Raimi remaking Ghostbusters from a Kevin Williamson script, and you have a pretty good idea of what this Brazilian horror-comedy is like: gory, self-aware, irreverent, and wildly entertaining.
When a local high school summons Bloody Mary, the Ghoulbusters — a team of local YouTubers with a cheesy ghost hunting show — are called in to take out the vengeful spirit. In addition to possessing people to the point of cranial combustion, the ghost exploits the high school setting by haunting inanimate objects,...

They have been known to get us through tough times in our childhoods, but what happens to imaginary friends when we get older and leave them behind for the “real world”? Do they simply vanish, or does some part of them remain, waiting for us to return for a playdate that will never happen? And what if they get impatient while they wait, with their own imagination becoming dark and twisted as the days turn into years and they wait for us to return so that we can be friends forever? These intriguing (and unsettling) questions are explored in the new horror movie Imaginary, a supernatural slice of gateway horror that takes some unexpectedly eerie turns and introduces viewers to Chauncey the Bear, a new horror villain who doesn’t play nice.

If you missed one of 2023’s more underrated horror movies, we’ve got great news: Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is heading to streaming next month.
Look for The Last Voyage of the Demeter to arrive on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 11, 2024.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single passage from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The film is “based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London.

If there’s one upcoming MCU project that has been talked about in recent times, it’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ In September Kevin Feige announced that David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko would be reprising their roles as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, respectively, in the film. He also confirmed that Yelena Belova would be a part of the Thunderbolts team in the film.
Now, the cast of the upcoming movie was the most talked-about aspect of the movie. Initially, Steven Yeun was cast to play Sentry in the movie, and the confirmation followed soon. Fans were not exactly ecstatic with that casting choice, citing obvious differences in how Steven Yeun looks and how comics accurate Sentry is supposed to look; even with a muscle suit and heavy use of CGI,...

Among the highly anticipated upcoming MCU projects, ‘Thunderbolts’ has been a frequent topic of discussion. In September, Kevin Feige revealed the return of David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko in their respective roles for the film. Additionally, Yelena Belova was confirmed as part of the Thunderbolts team.
Rumors then circulated about Steven Yeun playing Sentry, which was later confirmed. However, Yeun recently withdrew from the role due to scheduling conflicts resulting from the recently concluded SAG-AFTRA strike. Now, according to Daniel Richtman, a reliable source, Austin Abrams is reportedly being considered for the role of Sentry.

Regardless, Abrams bears a striking resemblance to the comic-accurate Sentry, particularly in his pre-Golden Sentry serum days, during his less-than-ideal moments.

Nearly three and a half years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. A few months ago, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this year’s Hollywood strikes. But now Collider has shared a quote from the producers that indicates there might be some kind of trouble behind the scenes…
The screenplay for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 has been written by the first film’s writers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, working from a story crafted by del Toro.

Look out, Hollywood, Steven Spielberg’s daughter, Destry Allyn Spielberg, is making her feature directorial debut with one of the biggest badasses in the game, Giancarlo Esposito! According to Deadline, Esposito is joining Spielberg’s upcoming thriller, Please Don’t Feed the Children. The script hails from writer Paul Bertino, with Michelle Dockery, former NFL tight end Vernon Davis, Joshuah Melnick, Emma Meisel, Dean Scott Vazquez, Zoe Colletti, Regan Aliyah, and Andrew Liner making up the ensemble cast.
Pandemic-sensitive viewers beware: the plot for Please Don’t Feed the Children revolves around a group of orphans heading south, searching for a new life after a viral outbreak decimates their country’s adult population. Unfortunately, the new home is hard-fought, as danger lurks everywhere. Jason Dubin produces through Perry Street Films with Josh Kesselman and Michael Hagerty.

Out of all the classic monsters that pop up in costume shops around the Halloween season, there’s one that I believe has always been criminally underused in scary movies. Unlike witches, vampires and undead ghouls, the lowly Scarecrow is usually relegated to the background of mainstream horror media despite serving as an instantly recognizable (and genuinely eerie) harbinger of Autumn.
That’s not to say that we haven’t seen memorable examples of these ever-watching fiends in scary movies before – I just wish that there were more of them! And now that we’re fast approaching the spookiest night of the year, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the scariest scarecrows in horror films in the hopes that future filmmakers will make use of this underrated monster.

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Traditionally the best horror films have been rated R to provide fans with the appropriate blood, guts and chills required to give a proper scare, but every so often one comes along that the MPAA doesn’t think warrants such a harsh rating yet still gives that blood curdling, spine tingling spook fest you would want from a horror movie of any rating. With the massive success of Five Night’s at Freddy’s, we wanted to know what PG13 rated Horror film has been your favorite. Halloween fast approaches, and with that comes costume parties, excessive amounts of candy, spooky-themed drinks…and the inevitable hangover that comes from all that sugar the next day. Odds are most of us will be partying the Saturday before Halloween, so I thought that it might be a good idea to just chill out the next day with some spooky short stories for a few hours while everyone sips on their hangover cures and avoids the sunlight all day.
With that in mind, join me on Sunday, October 29th at 1pm Pst for a Spooky Short Story Corner, where I’ll spend a few hours reading aloud from a few of my favorite horror stories from Edgar Allan Poe, Clive Barker, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and more. I’ll be looking to keep things low key, so I’ll stray away from anything too disturbing or that necessitates shouting or loud noises.

Many horror fans can recall reading at least one scary short-story collection during their formative years. Especially if they stayed up reading that book in the middle of the night rather than sleeping. These anthologies and omnibuses were designed to send chills down spines in under a few minutes. Some tales took the longer route, but all the same, this once favorite activity at sleepovers and campouts aimed to make you squirm as soon as possible.
This format isn’t as regularly seen these days in children’s horror literature, but a properly spooky short story never goes out of style. The ten classic collections below, ones chiefly from the ’80s and ’90s, are just a few examples of this former trend. And to help demonstrate why they were — and still are — so appealing, a creepy story from each book is highlighted.

Movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice this uear. Universal released two well-reviewed Dracula projects – the horror comedy Renfield and the more serious The Last Voyage of the Demeter – and both of them tanked at the box office. Renfield couldn’t even crack the $27 million mark at the global box office, and Demeter barely made it over the $20 million mark. Trying to recoup some of their losses, Universal gave The Last Voyage of the Demeter a VOD release just two and a half weeks after it reached theatres. Now it has been announced that the film will be receiving a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on October 17th – and it’s coming to home video with deleted scenes and an alternate opening.

Editor’s Note: This review covers the first five episodes of the new series.
Over the course of the last 30 years, R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps has wreaked spine-chilling havoc on its adolescent audience, spreading its spookiness over 200 books, 74 episodes of television and two feature films. The green, goopy letters of the franchise’s recognizable moniker have dribbled an indelible mark on the gateway to horror fandom, infusing generation after generation of burgeoning fright seekers with a nostalgic love for haunted masks, cursed cameras and one particularly spiteful ventriloquist dummy.
And now, Goosebumps is back once more, repurposing and reimagining R.L. Stine’s indelible monstrosities for a new generation.
Unlike any version of the series that’s come before, this new iteration of Goosebumps strips away its spookily silly, candy-colored reputation to find the fun and the fear beneath its pockmarked surface.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Happy September, Horror Fiends! It’s a time for cozy sweaters, pumpkin-spiced everything, and… menacing cornfields? That’s right! As the amber hues of fall sweep in and we all debate the merits of pumpkin spice (is it delightful or overdone?), there’s another seasonal staple that’s been quietly setting the stage for some of cinema’s creepiest tales: the seemingly innocent cornfield.
These golden labyrinths, with their whispering stalks and hide-and-seek vibes, have long been the go-to backdrop for filmmakers with a penchant for the spooky. And honestly, who can blame them? There’s something inherently thrilling about not knowing what’s lurking just a few rows over. Maybe it’s a scarecrow… or maybe it’s something far more sinister.
So, if you’re looking to add a dash of harvest-time horror to your movie nights, or if you’re just curious about why cornfields are Hollywood’s favorite rural runway,...

2023 is a year when movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice. Universal released two well-reviewed Dracula projects this year – the horror comedy Renfield and the more serious The Last Voyage of the Demeter – and both of them tanked at the box office. Renfield couldn’t even crack the $27 million mark at the global box office, and Demeter, which reached theatres on August 11th, has only made $15 million so far. Hoping to have better luck in the home video market, Universal has already given The Last Voyage of the Demeter a digital release, and you can check it out at This Link.
Escaping development hell twenty years after the script was first written (Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz receive writing credits on the finished film), The Last Voyage of the Demeter is based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. The film...

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal’s latest film, the Dracula tale The Last Voyage of the Demeter, reached theatres last weekend (you can read our review Here), but unfortunately it didn’t get off to a great start at the box office, pulling in just $7 million. That’s not the only disappointing news there is to share about an Øvredal project, as the director has also revealed that he is no longer attached to an adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where...

The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Although there is a real strike going on in Hollywood, Smith has gotten a waiver from SAG to move forward with his next film. With only one weak opening, the weekend box office totals have understandably dropped below any since late June. Have no fear, though: overall performance remains positive.
The same weekend last year managed only a paltry $65 million. The over $115 million that came in this weekend continues the momentum and brings the industry closer to a $4 billion summer — what was seen as an optimistic goal before May is now within view.
If so, the “Barbie” (Warner Bros.)/”Oppenheimer” (Universal) tandem remains the biggest contributing factor. The top two titles (“Oppenheimer” climbed back to #2) notched over 45 percent of the total gross, with both dropping only slightly more than a third in their fourth weekends. Another $33.7 million haul puts Greta Gerwig’s comedy smash up to $526 million domestic, nearing $1.2 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s biopic added another $18.8 million, getting it to $264 million domestic, over $650 million worldwide so far.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which spotlights the doomed ship in Bram Stoker’s oft-adapted 1897 novel, is the second Dracula film released in 2023 after “Renfield.” Both take generous liberties with the source material, which brings up the question: Out of the 200-some films about the famous Count, which ones are the most faithful?
Here’s our ranking of some of the most popular, and a few lesser-known, Dracula adaptations.
Universal
8. Renfield (2023)
Pretty much the only thing this horror comedy has in common with the novel is Nicholas Hoult as the bug-eating title character and a delightfully campy Nicolas Cage as his bloodthirsty boss. The movie brings them both into the 21st century, makes Renfield an ass-kicking hero and swaps out Lucy and Mina for Awkwafina’s incorruptible cop.
Miramax
7. Dracula 2000 (2000)
The film begins with a shot of the wrecked Demeter and footprints in the sand as Dracula heads to town.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” a new period horror film set aboard a merchant ship, is capsizing in its debut at the domestic box office amid the ongoing success of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Universal release — the studio’s second stab this year at a Dracula film after the action-comedy “Renfield” bombed in the spring — is facing some choppy waters after earning $2.62 million on its opening day from 2,715 locations, a figure that includes $750,000 in Thursday previews. “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is projecting a fifth-place debut and a mere $6.5 million gross for its three-day opening weekend.
Nothing really says the summer blockbuster season is winding down like an anachronistic genre picture meeting a swift end in its debut. Even with a production budget totaling only $45 million — a moderate figure for a period spectacle — it’ll likely be difficult for “The Last Voyage” to be a theatrical success. There are ominous clouds gathering over the opening weekend of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which is rather appropriate for a film about a ship's crew who are doomed to become a mid-journey vampire snack. Made for a steep (for a horror movie) budget of $45 million, "Last Voyage of the Demeter" is set to fall short of expectations that were already set very low. Though Variety reported in the wake of Thursday previews that the film was heading for an opening weekend between $7 million and $9 million, Friday's numbers are now pointing to a debut of just $6.5 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," the film was directed by André Øvredal, who has some great horror movies already under his belt, including "Troll Hunter," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and "The Autopsy of Jane Doe." This weekend's major new release in theaters is "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which has finally made its way to the big screen after spending literal decades stuck in development hell. Unfortunately, it feels a little bit like Universal Pictures isn't giving the big horror flick the push one might expect for a Dracula movie with an A-list cast. But a couple of cinematic icons in the form of Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro are out here spreading the gospel, as they've both had very nice things to say about the film.
King, one of the most prolific authors of our time whose works have inspired movies like "It" and this year's "The Boogeyman," took to Twitter recently to share his thoughts on director André Øvredal's latest. King admitted his skepticism, but the film ended up winning him over. "I was doubtful about 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter,...

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" brings a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to new vitality. It pulses with agonizing kill sequences, doused in buckets of blood and torn flesh. Director André Øvredal, known for helming such films as "Trollhunter," "The Autopsy of Jane Doe," and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," smothers the screen with depth and brilliant detail. He doesn't waste a single frame, delivering enough visual storytelling to keep you compelled to dive further into a great, unholy abyss.
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" stuns with gorgeous cinematography, a smattering of rain-drenched sequences of tension, and plenty of blood-curdling, fang-toothed images that'll haunt you forever. Credit should also be given to cinematographers Roman Osin and Tom Stern for their expertly-crafted work alongside Øvredal. Without them, the film would not contain such an impressive style as it does.

André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter may be based on one chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but the film has had many chapters in its 25-year development saga.
Co-screenwriter Bragi Schut Jr.’s original script dates back to the late ‘90s, as he felt that Stoker’s “The Captain’s Log” chapter could warrant the Alien-on-a-merchant-ship treatment, with Dracula taking the place of a Xenomorph. In the two-plus decades that followed, creative teams changed several times, and names like David Slade, Neil Marshall, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Ben Kingsley and Viggo Mortensen came and went.
Guillermo del Toro was also once attached to the project, and when his schedule became an issue, he quickly recommended Øvredal as his replacement. Del Toro had just produced Øvredal’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), so the two filmmakers had some early discussions about the project before setting sail.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is many things – it’s a cracking good horror movie that is set almost entirely on a doomed ship traveling from Transylvania to London; it’s a refreshing expansion of “Dracula” lore; and it also is a nice nod to Universal Pictures’ classic monster-filled past. It’s existence, though, feels like a bit of a miracle, especially if you had followed the project’s development over the past 20 – yes, 20 – years. That might be the blink of an eye to an immortal creature of the night like Dracula, but in moviemaking terms, that’s an eternity.
Let’s take a look at where “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” started, with a spec script that shook up Hollywood, and where it ended up, as a big studio movie from Universal, with commentary from the eventual film’s director André Øvredal.
Just be warned: there are choppy waters ahead.

The eponymous ship in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is just as crucial to the story as its ill-fated crew and passengers. What begins as a routine charter carrying private cargo becomes a harrowing fight for survival as Dracula (Javier Botet) uses the isolated Demeter as feeding grounds.
Director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) enlisted production designer Edward Thomas to bring the Demeter to life, imbuing the schooner with impressive scale and meticulous detail. Thomas is no stranger to epic-sized horror adventures; the production designer is responsible for the thrilling set pieces in Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” set sail with $750,000 in previews on Thursday.
The horror film, which is derived from a transit-heavy chapter of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” screened in 2,350 theaters with showings beginning at 5:00 p.m. It tells the story of the merchant ship that ferried fifty unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London. Suffice to say, a sinister presence with a nice set of chompers is lurking in the cargo hold, and is able to make short work of the doomed crew. A similar fate may await “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which doesn’t appear able to muster much of a fight against “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” The horror movie should premiere to an anemic $7 million to $9 million — a disastrous result for the $45 million production. Universal is distributing the DreamWorks Pictures production.

Even if you don't know his name, you've probably seen the work of Javier Botet. Specifically, if you've watched a horror movie in the 21st century, you've almost surely seen him. Or rather, you've seen his creatures. After scaring the pants off audiences worldwide with his terrifying work in the modern classics "Rec" and "Rec 2," Botet became horror's go-to "monster guy," sliding into the unsettling skins of ghosts, demons, zombies, aliens, and even non-Pennywise incarnations of the titular creature in "It." On the small screen, he played creatures in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Game of Thrones." On the big screen, his credits include "Mama," "The Conjuring 2," "Crimson Peak," "His House," "Insidious: The Last Key," and so much more. He's the century's definitive monster performer.
Born with Marfan syndrome, Botet has utilized his physical differences to pull off characters who feel like walking, actually-there special effects. He stands 6' 7" tall and he's impossibly thin,...

There’s a reason that Dracula has endured as a figure of fascination for horror filmmakers for more than a century. Bram Stoker’s vampire creation proves endlessly malleable, subject to all sorts of depictions from actors as far afield as Max Schreck, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman and, most recently, Nicolas Cage. The role is catnip, especially since the Count can be as sexy as he is menacing, as seductive as he is deadly.
That is, until his portrayal in André Ovredal’s Gothic horror film based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Stoker’s 1897 classic novel. As portrayed by Javier Botet, this is a vampire who seems more a feral wild creature than anything resembling a figure who could reasonably pass among human society. He’s one of the viscerally scariest Draculas ever seen onscreen, but he’s also one of the dullest.
