"Die Legende der Maske" sounds and looks like these RTL adventure movies, but it was actually an ARD production. During 90 minutes we watch how the female protagonist finds a powerful mask during archaeological work in Mexico and has her daughter abducted later on as the kidnappers force her to trade the mask for the girl's life. The movie was directed by Florian Froschmayer from Switzerland, who is pretty experienced with television movies already. The script is by Timo Bernd and the same thing can be said about him. The lead actress is Claudia Michelsen who has been in films for over 25 years now.

It's often unclear in this movie who is friend and who is foe and we also get a decent little mother-daughter bonding story. Now you know what I would have found entertaining: if the daughter turned out to be the main antagonist and been a complete sociopath. Obviously she wasn't. You should always feel skeptic if there is a male character included and he is not a love interest and pretty much the same age as the female lead character. These are often enemies and it's also true for this movie. Apart from that, there's some graphic violence included. A young woman gets shot and killed in front of our eyes. All in all, it's not a particularly good movie though and it's all a bit uninspired, also how the messenger in the end quickly admits everything. Not recommended, although I'm glad they did not include a cheesy love story for Michelsen's character just for the sake of it.
