Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Streep will be also in good company at the festival with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig serving as jury president. The pair worked together on “Little Women.”

Greta Gerwig might be honouring her two-film commitment to Netflix’s planned Narnia franchise in one big lump.
Before Barbie became the phenomenon that it did last summer, Greta Gerwig had already agreed her next move: a two-film deal with Netflix to kick off the streaming platform’s latest attempt to launch a big splashy franchise, this time with a series of adaptations of Cs Lewis’ beloved Narnia books.
News of Gerwig’s deal with Netflix first emerged towards the end of 2022, a good half a year before Barbie would release to huge acclaim and transform her from a respected director of impressive indie breakouts (Ladybird) and charming literary adaptations (Little Women) into a coveted studio director of blockbuster films with mass market appeal.
To be fair to Netflix, though, the folks there managed to tie Gerwig up before the success of Barbie and as such, they find themselves with...

There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut.
Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Arnow writes, directs and stars. And that’s Bdsm, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
The helmer is thrilled to see her feature (after 2017’s i hate myself :), and a handful of well-received shorts) launch a theatrical run, with Magnolia distributing. “That’s how I dream of my movies being seen,” Arnow tells Deadline. “It’s also so important to see comedies (on the big screen) Shared laughter with strangers is quite beautiful and healing in a way.

Uberto Pasolini’s “Nowhere Special” is delicately tinted by profound shades of imminent grief. As a 35-year-old, terminally ill single father in Northern Ireland, John (a quietly powerful James Norton) grieves his impending demise and the inevitable fact that he will vacate his four-year-old son Michael’s (Daniel Lamont) life permanently and prematurely. A Belfast window washer, John sees the reflections of his grief everywhere as he scrubs and shines surface after surface. In one scene, it’s the headstones on display in the window of a funeral parlor. In another, it’s a dad happily picking up his baby inside a restaurant. That’s just John’s every day on the other side of a glass facade, with stark glimpses into what’s coming and what he will soon lose.
Meanwhile, his often silent and always observant toddler Michael deals with his own share of grief, at an age...

It’s been a hot minute since everybody’s childhood crush, Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the cult classic Harry Potter franchise, graced the silver screen. The actress was last seen in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women way back in 2019 as Meg March. Apart from the beloved Harry Potter franchise she’s most well-known for, we even saw her in fun projects like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring, and she even played

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. [Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2019. It has been updated with new entries to coincide with the release of “Civil War.”]
Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

Timothée Chalamet’s journey in Hollywood has been an inspiring one. From making his name as a young star in independent films to bagging huge mainstream projects like Dune and Wonka, the actor has proved that he has the personality and talent to juggle both worlds with aplomb.

With the recently released Dune 2, Chalamet has further showcased his growth as an actor through the evolution of his character, Paul Atreides. But the Oscar nominee’s casting was criticized when he was initially signed on for the role by Denis Villeneuve. The director, though, was steadfast in his reasoning behind the decision and elaborated on why he was insistent on only Chalamet playing the role.

Looking back at it from 2024, the decision to cast Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in "Dune" seems pretty unambiguously wise. Not only is this guy's resume absolutely padded by this point, with his standout performances in critical darlings like "Little Women," "The French Dispatch," and "Bones and All," but he's also proven himself to be a reliable box office draw with recent musical prequel "Wonka." But back in 2018, when the first rumors of Chalamet playing Paul started flying around, the decision was a lot more questionable. Chalamet's biggest lead role at that point was "Call Me By Your Name," a soulful romantic drama that won him plenty of acclaim, but didn't exactly showcase his abilities at playing the terrifying hyper-intelligent tyrant that Paul would have to become.

Kirsten Dunst’s latest onscreen avatar, a hardened war photographer named after the iconic Lee Miller, doesn’t have much time to waste. In Alex Garland’s heart-pounding actioner “Civil War,” Dunst and her Lee are at the center of a fractured America that isn’t quite done combusting just yet, as she head through a bombed-out, terrifying Un-United States in a bid to get to Washington, D.C. before everything really falls apart. There’s not a lot of time for artifice or florid conversation or icing over the tough stuff.
As the Oscar nominee recently explained to IndieWire, the film isn’t exactly what people might be expecting, and while that kind of chatter might sound like standard press tour fare meant to drum up audience interest, Dunst is so straightforward in her interviews — so free of artifice, of saying stuff just to say it — that the message feels even more resonant.

It had been quite a while since a cinematic franchise emerged apart from the MCU that took the cine-goers by surprise and gave them a reason to flock to the cinemas once more, which is none other than the Dune series.
With the release of the first film in the franchise, people were instantly hooked and awestruck by the great work that had been done, leading it toward both commercial and critical success.

And now, the second part of the film has been on the same track towards outstanding box office performance, though still, there is a long way to sandwalk until they reach the $1 billion mark. But even if they don’t, lead star Timothée Chalamet has a reason to celebrate as Dune: Part Two becomes his highest-grossing film of all time with a recorded $633 million.

Saoirse Ronan has spent much of her youth racking up Oscar nominations, scoring her first bid when she was 13 and her fourth when she was 25. Take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Ronan’s parents were both actors and she was born in The Bronx, New York while her father was studying acting there and working odd jobs. Her parents returned to their native Ireland when Saoirse was three, where she developed her signature accent. She began acting herself at the age of 9 on a few different Irish television programs. Although she missed out on a role in the Harry Potter films, she bounced back with a key part in the 2007 Best Picture contender “Atonement,” which brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
She earned three Best Actress nominations for three films that all competed in Best Picture: “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women...

Although more devoted fans will know him from the time of his early role in Nolan’s Interstellar, Timothée Chalamet has now become a household Hollywood name and one of the most wanted actors in the whole world. After having successful outings in Oscar-nominated movies Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and Little Women, Chalamet has managed to land major blockbuster roles, with his two most recent projects, Wonka and the Dune series, becoming major hits.
Both of these projects have been produced by Warner Bros., so it is only natural that the studio wanted to build on this success and keep Chalamet with them for the time being. This resulted, as many sources reported, in the signing of a new, multi-project, multi-year contract between Chalamet and Warner Bros., which will see the young star remain with the studio for several years.

Warner Bros. is doubling down on the business of Timothée Chalamet. The studio signed a multi-year feature film deal with the actor to collaborate on future projects as a star and producer.
Chalamet led back-to-back box office hits for Warner Bros. with last December’s “Wonka” ($632 million globally) and this March’s “Dune: Part Two” ($575 million globally and counting). In what is no surprise, Warner Bros Motion Picture Group is getting into business with its Dune and Wonka star Timothée Chalamet, and has hammered a multi-year first look feature film deal with the Oscar nominee as actor and producer.
Between the Dune movies and Wonka, Chalamet’s recent pics with the Burbank, CA lot have delivered $1.6 billion to studio coffers. Chalamet became the first actor in over four decades to star in the top two domestic-grossing films released in an 8-month period.
The latest talent deal is one of many hammered out by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as they set their future slate at the studio. Since being announced for the top studio job at Warner Bros back in June 2022, the duo have made deals with Tom Cruise, Jon M. Chu, and T Street’s Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

Timothée Chalamet has proven twice within just the last three months that he is a true movie star. He’s one of the few young actors right now who can open a movie, whether it’s a family-friendly romp like “Wonka” or a sci-fi epic like “Dune: Part Two.”

Ian Fleming created the prominent British secret agent in 1953, and he has since been featured in 12 novels and two collections of short stories. Despite having a readership of their own, James Bond’s cinematic adaptations helped popularize the character on a large scale.
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises
Following the expiration of Pierce Brosnan’s contract, Bale, the British actor, was deemed one of the best candidates to portray James Bond due to his acclaimed appearance. Unexpectedly, The Dark Knight star rejected the role—which has historically only been given to British actors—because he felt it promoted negative stereotypes about the country.

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.
