Exclusive: Change is afoot at Funny or Die, Deadline has learned, with Kathy Goodman now to serve as CEO of the esteemed comedy studio.
After serving as Senior Advisor to owner Henry R. Muñoz III since his acquisition of the company several years back, Goodman steps into the role of Mike Farah, who soon will depart Funny or Die after a run of more than 15½ years. Also departing is Joe Farrell, who has been with the company for nearly 13 years, serving as Chief Creative Officer for the past few.
While transitioning out of their current executive roles, Farah and Farrell will remain executive producers on After Midnight, CBS’s recently launched late-night game show hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, and continue to produce the slate of projects they’ve created. Michelle Rosette remains aboard as CFO, with the search for a new Chief Comedy Officer in charge of development in its final stages.

The first week of After Midnight on CBS brought in viewing numbers that are, well, about what would be expected for a network show airing at 12:37 a.m. in 2024.
The show, an expanded and updated take on Comedy Central’s @midnight that’s hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, averaged 579,000 same-day viewers for its first three installments, according to Nielsen. The Jan. 16 premiere drew 686,000 viewers, based on preliminary figures, which would mean the subsequent two episodes averaged about 525,000 viewers.
Delayed viewing numbers are somewhat rosier: After three days (and not including streaming), After Midnight rose to 819,000 viewers for its first week. Its DVR lift of 240,000 viewers is more than three times bigger than that of The Late Late Show With James Corden (77,000) in the 2022-23 season.

After Midnight, the new late-night show hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, finally landed on our screens on Tuesday night (January 16), well, technically Wednesday morning, given its 12:37 am timeslot. The show aired immediately after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and is a replacement for The Late Late Show, which ended its run last year after James Corden exited the series. Colbert serves as an executive producer on the new show, which is a reboot of the old Comedy Central series @midnight. “I’m Taylor Tomlinson, and this is After Midnight, where three comedians enter, one wins, and two will regret participating,” Tomlinson said at the top of the episode, per Variety. “We’re taking the internet and desperately trying to make it fun. It’s gonna be fun, right? Comedians, you’ll be competing for the grand prize of my father’s approval. It is rare but winnable.” Unlike...

Farewell James Corden, hello Taylor Tomlinson. CBS unveiled its new late-night show, After Midnight, last night in the time slot following The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Instead of a talk show like The Late Late Show, After Midnight is a reboot of Comedy Central’s popular game show @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes.
For its debut, Tomlinson enlisted fellow comedians Whitney Cummings, Aparna Nancherla, and Kurt Braunohler, who battled it out in a series of improvised games. Tomlinson joked that the grand prize was “my father’s approval.” “It is rare but winnable,...

After Midnight finally made its debut January 16 in the timeslot formerly held by James Corden.
Hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, the show is a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network. For those who didn’t see the original version, imagine a combination of Who’s Line Is It Anyway? and Tosh 2.0: it’s an internet-themed panel game show that challenges comedians to come up with the best yuks during a series of improv games.
For the premiere, Whitney Cummings battled it out against Aparna Nancherla (former writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Kurt Braunohler (former host of IFC’s Bunk) in front of a studio audience for the grand prize of “my father’s approval,” quipped Tomlinson. “It is rare but winnable.”

CBS gave its new late night series “After Midnight” a bit of a soft launch on Tuesday night, premiering the show with minimal fanfare in its 12:37 a.m. timeslot behind “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Comedian Taylor Tomlinson hosts the series, which tapes on the Paramount lot in Hollywood.
The decision to keep the “After Midnight” premiere lowkey is by design: Allow the new show to find its voice over the next few weeks, prior to the Super Bowl and return of first-run scripted series in February, when more eyeballs will be back at the broadcast networks.

Jo Koy is hosting the 81st Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 7, which begs the question: Who is Jo Koy?
Koy, 52, is a popular stand-up comedian whose jokes are inspired by his real life. He added that ahead of the ceremony, he hadn’t “slept or done anything social since the [hosting] announcement. I’ve been binge-watching the whole time, just non-stop. CBS kicks off a new era in late-night on Tuesday, January 16, when it launches “After Midnight” at 12:37 a.m. hosted by comic Taylor Tomlinson.
The series, which will rely on a rotating series of panelists to discuss the latest trends and memes in the digi-sphere, will follow an original hour of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Nearly nine months after James Corden said goodbye to The Late Late Show, CBS has finally dated his replacement.
After Midnight, a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, starring rising comedian Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16.
The show will, of course, air in The Late Late Show’s former spot at 12:37am, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
It comes almost a year after Deadline revealed that a reboot of @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network, would replace Corden.
Tomlinson, who has recorded a number of Netflix specials, won the hosting job at the end of last year, beating X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the gig.
Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

Taylor Tomlinson will take over James Corden’s time slot, as she will host After Midnight, officially replacing The Late Late Show, which has been on the air since 1995.
On last night’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert acted as if they were still looking for a host to the show he leads into. CBS has tapped stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson to host its new late night franchise “After Midnight.” The series is executive produced by Stephen Colbert, who announced Tomlinson during Wednesday’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Tomlinson then discussed the news with Colbert on stage.
Tomlinson’s recent TV credits include her Netflix comedy specials “Look At You” and “Quarter Life Crisis.”
As announced earlier today, “After Midnight” will launch in early 2024 in the slot previously held by “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” It’s based on “@midnight,” which followed “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” from October 2013 to August 2017, was a panel series with mostly guest comedians, who would interact with host Chris Hardwick.
Earlier this year Tomlinson sealed a deal with Netflix for her next two standup specials to premiere on the streamer. Tomlinson taped her latest special in Washington, D.C., for a 2024 premiere date.

CBS is getting ready to let it all hang out after 12 a.m.
The Paramount Global network said it will launch its newest late-night entry, now titled “After Midnight,” in early 2024. And while a host has yet to be named for the program, an array of producers and top writers are already in place.
“After Midnight” will serve as an updated version of “@midnight,” an ersatz game show that focused on the latest trending topics served up on digital and social media. The program, which followed “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” from October 2013 to August 2017, relied heavily on a coterie of guest comedians, who would interact with host Chris Hardwick. CBS executives are said to have narrowed their list of potential talent down to a few and are doing due diligence on each.

‘After Midnight’: CBS Sets Showrunners & Team For ‘The Late Late Show With James Corden’ Replacement
CBS is making its latest moves in late-night.
The network has set the showrunners, head writer and exec producing team for After Midnight, its reboot of Comedy Central series @midnight, that will replace The Late Late Show with James Corden.
It comes as the series, which is set to air in the 12:30am slot in early 2024, is narrowing down the field for a host. We hear that Taylor Tomlinson, X Mayo and Ricky Velez are the three in contention and the trio did a test shoot last Wednesday. A decision is expected soon. CBS declined to comment on the host situation.

CBS is reportedly nearing the selection of a new host to take over the time slot previously occupied by James Corden’s Late Late Show. In line with their earlier announcement, CBS has opted not to continue the same show with a different host but to introduce a revamped edition of the popular Comedy Central game show, @midnight. As reported by Puck News, CBS’s CEO, George Cheeks, is presently in the process of evaluating three potential hosts: X Mayo, a former Daily Show writer and American Auto actress; Ricky Velez, a stand-up comedian, and Taylor Tomlinson, a comedian, and writer. The exact nature of CBS’s rebooted version remains uncertain, but it’s worth recalling how Comedy Central ran the show from 2013 to 2017. In each episode, a panel of comedians engaged in witty banter about internet culture and the day’s headlines. The contestant in third place was eliminated before the final round,...

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.

Comedy Central is going back to square one in its efforts to find a new host for “The Daily Show.”
The Paramount Global cable network is considering a wider array of candidates to take the reins of the program from previous emcee Trevor Noah, according to people familiar with the matter, after having previously identified Hasan Minhaj as a leading possibility. The decision appears to come in the wake of a recent report in The New Yorker in which some of the supposedly autobiographical stories that Minhaj has used in his routines were found to be embellished.
Comedy Central declined to comment, as did WME, the talent agency that represents Minhaj. Comedy Central has never confirmed that Minhaj was in line for the position, which was previously reported by Variety in August.

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. spoke about the future of late-night TV at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime, saying he believes studios don’t realize that the more they look to downsize shows, the more likely they will face stiff competition from TikTok creators and other social media stars who can retain the rights to their content.
“I think the cheaper that they choose to make the product, the more accessible and affordable you make it for outside competitors to come in,” Wood Jr. said, when answering a question about if he was interested in hosting the Comedy Central talker following the exit of Trevor Noah, or any late-night show, in general.

With the writers strike into its second month and a potential actors strike looming, someone is going to have to find a middle ground. And on Tuesday, the head of CBS George Cheeks outlined one way in which the writers and the studios could still find a compromise.
It has something to do with windowing and the licensing content. Streaming residuals has been one of the WGA’s key sticking points in negotiations with the AMPTP, namely because there aren’t enough of them. But if streamers started rethinking hoarding all their content exclusively and instead were open to windowing or licensing their shows and movies to other outlets, whether that’s putting them back on cable or broadcast, on other streamers, or on Fast (free ad-supported streaming television) services, suddenly there’s new opportunities to pay out residuals.
Cheeks said on Tuesday at the Banff World Media Festival in Alberta,...

Update (6/13/2023): CBS CEO George Cheeks confirmed the @midnight reboot during a panel at the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday, June 13, in Alberta, Canada. He said it was a natural program to air directly after The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “The 12:30 a.m. slot is ripe for reinvention,” he said, per Variety. “There aren’t a ton of people watching at that hour, you really do need to think about what is the true cross platform version? What we ended up doing, first of all, it’s Funny or Die and Stephen Colbert, so the auspices couldn’t be any better. “Late Show” host and executive producer Stephen Colbert is sticking around at the CBS late night program for another three years.
Colbert, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the year, has agreed to extend his contract through 2026. He first took over hosting duties in September 2015 from David Letterman.
The news comes as CBS has been airing repeats of the comedy variety talk show since the Writers Guild of America strike began on May 2 after the group was unable to reach an agreement in contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The WGA strike involves a long list of concerns that the writers want Hollywood studios to address, from addressing the use of artificial intelligence to the low pay involved in writing streaming series to reining in “mini-rooms” used to skirt contractual pay practices.

“We just extended him for three more years and I was praying for that to happen,” Cheeks said at a Deadline-moderated panel.
Although The Late Show is one of the late-night shows that have been hit by the writers strike – all of late-night is essentially dark, Cheeks said that before the strike, The Late Show was “absolutely crushing it”.
“It’s just a great cohesive group that is firing on all cylinders and Stephen’s really enjoying himself,” he said.

Belly credits two of the biggest rappers of all time — Biggie Smalls and P. Diddy — for inspiring his rap career.
In the Palestinian-Canadian rapper’s new song “Ambiance”, off his upcoming album Mumble Rap 2, he raps: “I’m Biggie and Puff combined, at least that’s what I feel like.” While chatting with Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman in a new interview, we asked Belly if he really feels that way.
“I was raised on Biggie and Puff, you know. So I think I took a little bit from each one of them when it came time to come out as my own artist,” the 39-year-old said, elaborating that he took “Puff’s influence on the business side of what I do. And Big’s influence on the music side of what I do.”

Paramount Global said it would it cut its dividend as continued investment in streaming weighed on the company while it saw declines in its traditional revenue from advertising and cable distribution.
The owner of CBS, Nickelodeon and the Paramount movie studio said its first-quarter loss came to nearly $1.12 billion, or $1.81 a share, compared with a profit of $775 million, or 58 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue was essentially flat, down 1%, on shortfalls in its TV media and filmed entertainment units, while its streaming operations saw revenue rise 39%.
Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish and chief financial officer Naveen Chopra fielded tough questions about cost controls and asset sales during the company’s earnings call. Bakish opened by acknowledging “the challenging and uncertain macroeconomic environment” and said the red ink in the quarter reflected the perfect storm of “peak streaming investment intersects with fiscal ad softness.”

James Corden announced he'd be leaving "The Late Late Show" back in April 2022, telling Deadline at the time that he was "so immensely proud of the show," before revealing he'd been "really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure."
Alas, the adventure has mercifully come to a close after eight years of Corden gracing our screens. The "Cats" star took over from previous "Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson in March 2015, and has been providing us with his unctuous brand of late night shenanigans ever since — penetrating the culture with memorable segments such as Carpool Karaoke and ... y'know, probably some others.
For his send-off, Corden managed to bring together all the late night talk show hosts for a sketch in which they, too, struggle to recall any "Late Late Show" bits that aren't Carpool Karaoke. Of course, they do a lot more than that.
