The living dead launching out of their graves, zombie frogs getting revenge on the science teacher, and one epic cover of Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night"—these are only a few of the countless elements I love about Dance of the Dead, a midnight movie masterpiece that pits a diverse group of high schoolers and their surly gym teacher against a horde of the living dead at the prom. Directed by Gregg Bishop and written by Joe Ballarini, Dance of the Dead celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018, and while speaking with him about his new book earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of also talking with Ballarini about writing Dance of the Dead and how the cult zombie movie changed from its initial conception to its final version on the big screen.

Premiering at Goteborg Film Festival where it won the Fipresci Prize and moving on to Tribeca before playing many other festivals, Tom of Finland would seem to be testing the Academy with such a gay subject, but no more so than France with Bpm, Beats Per Minute, and South Africa’s The Wound, or in the past with Milk and the Celluloid Closet, and certainly within the context of the Academy Awards’ diversity this season, with Moonlight, a possible winner of best picture, and Luca Guadagnino’s stunningly beautiful Call Me by Your Name with Armie Hammer looking to make a run at Best Actor, the Academy’s spotty record of recognizing gay-themed cinema may be improving.

A few years ago, Eric Wareheim took a photo of his then-girlfriend's naked ass and sent it to an ice sculptor. Wareheim likes to throw raucous house parties "based on different parts of anatomy," he says. "I did one called Black Cock [black light and penis-themed]. Another one was Laser Boobs." The sculptor took Wareheim's photo and used it to carve an enormous ice butt, which became the centerpiece of an ass-focused party called Snow Booty. The sculpture had a canal carved into it that served as a conduit for booze, with its lower opening at the butt hole.

The past few weeks I’ve been talking a lot about other people’s Kickstarter campaigns. This week, here at ComicMix, I’m here to talk about our Kickstarter campaign that is active right now. That’s right; ComicMix LLC is working on a new project – a major comics collection to benefit Planned Parenthood.
I’m going to get into that in a minute.
This project has been in the works for nearly two years now. It started back in December of 2015. Fellow ComicMix columnist and my co-editor Molly Jackson and I were at Mia Pizza in Astoria NY. I was a mere two months into my tenure as a columnist here and we were discussing something we could do. We immediately thought of doing a comics anthology. We had a lot of ideas we were throwing around, including a throwback Crime Does Not Pay style anthology.
Eventually, Molly and...

On an off night between arena California shows in Anaheim and Sacramento, John Mayer routed himself through an unlikely venue on Wednesday: The 300-seat Echoplex in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles. It was a secret show. There, he played a 90-minute set in multiple configurations — with a full band, as a trio, and as a show-stealing solo acoustic encore programmed exclusively by audience requests. By the time Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell’s documentary about billionaire businessman/philanthropist John Paul DeJoria is over, you’ll want to know DeJoria. You’ll want to work for DeJoria. Hell, you’ll want to be adopted by DeJoria. The laudatory tone of this well-meaning, inspirational effort is so extreme that even Frank Capra might have dismissed it as being too good to be true.
And yet it is, according to the aptly titled Good Fortune.

Along with being an actress, lifestyle blogger, and all-around ageless bohemian goddess, Rachel True, who you absolutely remember from The Craft, also happens to be a tarot card reader. This week, an La Weekly writer published her account of going to Echo Park's House of Intuition with a friend who was going through a breakup; the two were offered a tarot reading and were surprised (and delighted) to find none other than teen witch Rochelle Zimmerman holding the deck. Now 50 years old (and looking exactly the same as she did in the movie, which came out two decades ago - casual), Rachel has apparently been interested in magic and healing energy since way before playing Rochelle. "The [tarot] cards . . . help me articulate the situation; and then I use my intuition to kind of springboard off of that," she said. "I find that a lot of people have a misconception that...

For her directorial debut, Amber Tamblyn chose to adapt a piece of pulp fiction. At least it feels like one: She and co-writer Ed Dougherty adapted a novel by “White Oleander” author Janet Fitch that puts a sensational spin on grief, one so melodramatic that at times it feels like a horror parody. You’re already familiar with Mommie Dearest; get ready to meet Mommie-in-Law Dearest. When I get actor and director Amber Tamblyn on the phone on Monday morning, she has her hands full. Metaphorically, because the first movie she directed, Paint It Black, is hitting theaters in just a few short days; literally, because she's stocking her fridge with breast milk for her infant daughter, Marlow. In the last 13 months, Tamblyn has somehow managed to finish her first feature film, release her third book of poetry, Dark Sparkler, welcome her first child, and take my call. I am impressed. Paint It Black revolves around the intimate, tense relationship that forms between Josie (Alia Shawkat) and her boyfriend's mother, Meredith (Janet McTeer), in the wake of his suicide. (Full disclosure: while I'd never met Tamblyn before, I do have a personal connection to this project. Janet Fitch, who wrote the novel Paint It Black, taught in my Mfa program and remains a mentor to me.

"Can the vacation, or the crisis, or whatever it is, just be over now? Can you come back to reality, because this is not reality. Echo Park is not reality." "Echo Park" is Amanda Marsalis' first feature film. She collaborated with cinematographer Jason McCormick, who was first Ad to Harris Savides on films such as "The Bling Ring," "Restless," "Somewhere," "Greenberg" and "Zodiac." [Editor's Note: Indiewire reached out to filmmakers with films playing at the 20th La Film Festival (June 11-19) to ask them about how they shot their indie, and what advice they had for other filmmakers. We'll be posting their responses throughout the run of the festival. Go Here for the master list.] What camera and lens did you use? Jason says: We used a Red Epic and an old set of spherical lenses from Panavision I really love. What was the most difficult shoot on your movie and how did you pull it off? In “Echo Park,” photographer Amanda Marsalis, making her feature directorial debut (with a script written by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta), paints a love letter of sorts to the titular Los Angeles neighborhood, interwoven with the tale of love lost and found between two souls searching for their place. Sophie (Mamie Gummer), is an unhappy Beverly Hills Housewife-to-be when she unceremoniously cuts herself loose from her predictable life and decamps across town to the hipster hood of Echo Park. In her new neighborhood, she gets more than she expected when meeting Alex (Tony Okungbowa) to buy his couch. He’s moving back to London, you see, and the two fall into the kind of easy and deep intimacy that happens when there’s no risk of long term commitment. Once one gets past the ridiculous premise of the film (in New York terms, the logline would be: “she left the Upper East...
