YOU CANT END IT THIS WAY
viapetty12 May 2018
This is a refreshingly different post-apocalyptic story. What makes it even more unique is the fact that it's a comedy. It takes getting used to and it marches to the beat of its own drum but quickly becomes endearing.

I am completely distraught at the news of its cancellation on fox and pray that it will either be reconsidered to be renewed or picked up by another outlet. Please let this show get busy living instead of getting busy dying.

Such an underrated comedy!
Rob133130 September 2022
The Last Man on Earth was such an underrated comedy that was cancelled too early. I'm glad it was able to get 4 seasons in but it needed one more to finish the story off. It sucks when shows end on a cliffhanger. It's about a cataclysm that strikes earth wiping out the entire population except for Phil Miller (Will Forte). He travels the United States, Canada and Mexican borders searching for other survivors. He ends up finding some fellow survivor and end up finding it difficult to live with other people again. What follows is an absolutely hilarious show and as always a hilarious Will Forte, who leads a pretty good cast that includes January Jones, Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Schaal, among others that are very funny in this. Give it a chance!

Incredibly Underrated!
Supermanfan-136 December 2020
The Last Man on Earth was an underrated comedy that should have gotten more attention than it did when it was on. It surprised me how funny this show was. The cast is what makes this show so funny, led by the always hilarious Will Forte. Forte is funny in just about everything he does but this really is one of his best and funniest roles of his underrated career. It's easily the funniest show that's based on the apocalypse. The show is smart too, it asks us to think about some big existential questions. The first season is the best but all of them are good and worth watching. The only negative is that it ended a season too early and on a cliffhanger. That shouldn't deter you from watching it though.

PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!

You can't leave us all hanging like this! Season 4 has such a cliff hanger, we need to know what's going on!! This has been such a hilariously clever show, I really hope there is a way for them to make at least one more series (preferably more than one!!)

**absolutely love this show** I do not understand all the negativity towards this show.It seems most negative reviews were prematurely written. I got hooked after two episodes and binge watched the rest up until season 3.

But ruined . . .
Pat10017 June 2021
Lots of imaginative funny twists and good jokes. Lots of great locations and good actors. Lots of nutty silliness. The first season was good.

Then it went bad. It became very repetitive as the cast stood around looking aghast at Will Forte's inane speeches. Again and again.

These seemed to take up about a quarter of every episode. I wanted to find out how it ended but it was cancelled after Season 4 so I didn't.

The only way I could get through it was to hit fast forward every time Will Forte appeared to be starting a long, boring nonsense spiel.

Oh farts, we need closure!

It took me a little while to get into this but I'm really glad I stuck with it.

I'd love there to be a final season, even if it's just a three episode special, to tidy things off.

I know a virus has swept the globe for real, and many of us have lost loved ones to it, but this show was warm-hearted fun and a return would be lovely.

The Perfect Hatewatch!
hjalsayegh17 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The series starts off on a good note, Phil Miller (played by Will Forte) is as the title tells us the last man left on the planet.

Then the show takes a nose dive because guess what! he isn't! there are more people left! surprise, I guess?

Carol (played by Kristen Schaal) is that crazy aunt you have that has a million cats, adds glitter and rhinestones to everything and thinks gluing raisins together makes them qualify as meatballs.... now as annoying as that sounds it's not nearly as annoying as making her the supposed "hottie" of the group.

It's not as annoying as having your main character degrade himself over and over until you the viewer is sitting there feeling awkward for him.

It's not as annoying as having forced relationships that pop out of nowhere and go nowhere just for the hell of it!!!!

Oddly enough this show managed to take an interesting and creative idea, drag it through the mud, spit on it while you sit there glued to the screen unable to take your eyes of the train wreck that's happening in front of you.

The show is entertaining, funny, memorable and you are going to hate yourself for watching it but still tone in for the next episode full of hope and anticipation.

After seeing 8 episodes this doesn't seem to go anywhere.
Dr_Sagan31 March 2015
Another missed opportunity here.

The script is childish and after watching 160 minutes of it, it really becomes boring and repetitive.

It's about Phil, the last man on Earth, who spends his remaining days without meaning and purpose, doing every ridiculous thing possible like blowing up things, pooping in pools and talking to balls with faces drawn on them a la Tom Hanks in Castaway.

But Phil isn't the last person on Earth and after a few additions to the cast including a sexy January Jones, who never looked prettier, you might think that the show could become interesting.

Despite the "growth" of the population the show fails to evolve itself. The situations Phil is getting into are uninspiring and overwhelmed by Phil's childish personality.

Overall: It's not funny unless you are in for jokes of awkward situations. What bothers me the most is that with a premise like that you could have a series faaar more interesting and enjoyable.

diminishing comedy
SnoopyStyle15 May 2018
A virus has killed every animal. Phil Tandy Miller (Will Forte) is the last man on Earth. He has painted on signs pointing to his hometown of Tucson. He is surprised to find other survivors. First, there is the equally wacky Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal) who forces him to agree to a marriage. Then there is the sexy Melissa Chartres (January Jones), friendly Todd Rodriguez (Mel Rodriguez), and others.

This started with such an unique premise for network TV. Forte does a great job being the ridiculous fool in this unusual apocalyptic comedy. Schaal is equal to his craziness and Jones has a dash of coldness to her beauty. The pilot episode suggests something completely different but also something completely impossible. I didn't think that a network TV show can be an one-man show and it turns out that it isn't. At some point, each additional character has diminishing return and the comedy flattens out. What started out as innovative turns into simply wacky. In the end, this is something different, something interesting, and some diminishing comedy. It's cancelled after 4 seasons which is just as well.

i had such high hopes, i made other watch.

Warning: Spoilers
I was so excited for this show because i have imagined what i would do if i was the last man on earth. This show went no where with it. So much so that they had to introduce the woman in the first show. I would have loved for him to visit museums and trash them, go to the zoo and ride something that wouldn't eat him or swim with the fish. I am guessing the budget only covered two cars and 9 fish tanks. The water thing threw me off. Unless you have a well water comes from that huge tower and works when there is no electricity. Unless it leaked out he would have a lifetime supply, if it ran out then move to the next town. Even zombie movies have running water. Speaking of where are the dead people and traffic jams? I would have picked aliens vs a virus to explain why the earth was so clean. More important than the stuff that is wrong is the lack of him doing much of anything. Unless they dive into a vault of gold coins like scrooge mc duck in the next episode i wont make it to the third.

Why is this show so polarizing?
dongwangfu21 September 2015
For some reason, there are a huge number of reviews that expect this to portray all the details of its post-apocalyptic premise exactly the way each reviewer imagines it should.

It is a sit-com! Was "Bob Newhart" accurate about mental illness? No. Could actual human beings live the summer camp style lives led by the central characters in "Friends"? No. Is "Last Man on Earth" anything more than an excuse to throw together different character types for humorous effect? No.

But as a sit-com style serial it is really very, very funny. Will Forte, the central character, is weak-willed but occasionally self-reflective anti-hero, and Kristin Schaal and January Jones are just two of a set of excellent comedians who play supporting roles.

The only reason I can think that so many ratings are so low is that people may have been looking for show in a different genre, and started watching and were unhappy it was basically a sit-com.

Hilarious, brilliant....genius.
StewartMoore4 October 2015
Astonishingly negative reviews here on IMDb for a show that is a total original, very funny and very well acted. The lead actor is such a brilliant oddball. I've watched most of season 1 and it builds very well, sustaining the development and the nightmare scenario while somehow keeping the wants of the lead out of his reach. Thwarted, might be the word. A set of circumstances that evolve in an amusing way. I can't think of a show like it. Looking back over the negative reviews here I find myself wondering if that is something to be proud of. It is far from lowest common denominator. It will likely not appeal to many, but I believe it has the makings of an underground classic.

It strated really well, but then...
joaomotta-4465617 August 2021
I really loved the idea of a post-apocalyptic world told in a lighter funny way. I was amazed at how connected it seemed with, at least the idea of, the Covid-19 pandemic. The downside of it was the ideology remarks. You don't need to do that to make it a great series, and season 4 had this huge (yet another actually) ideology remark. I got bored with it, didn't even finish the season, and no wonder it got canceled. People want to be entertained during these shows, not doctrinated. Pity, it had potential to be a great show!

What?!
jeffreyblezard22 June 2015
Not so much a review, but rather me sharing my opinion with everyone.

I thought that this show was absolutely hilarious. I genuinely haven't laughed as much as I did to this show, in such a long time. I loved how it was brutal and so very dark. I hope that there is another season. How anybody who has watched this from start to finish, for me that was in one sitting, can say that it is pure garbage is beyond me.

I think that it is a very well written show with some brilliant acting performances, even the bad ones were somehow good!

I honestly couldn't care about all of the people that are trash talking this show or saying that it isn't funny. You ARE wrong.

I really can't praise it enough. 10/10!!

Warning: Spoilers
I like Will Forte. He plays the selfish bachelor well. Many of the negative reviews seem to expect Will Smith- not Will Forte. This is a slapstick parody- not I Am Legend. He's not the most attractive guy and he just does whatever because he literally has no one to impress. The beginning glosses over the imaginative "I would drive a Rolls Royce through a museum" because he's obviously done that. It's 2 years after everyone left- he traveled the country in search of life. Now he's resolved to fate and simply, utterly bored.

Should he work out like Will Smith in I am Legend? Why? No zombies are chasing him? Should he make a farm? Why? There's plenty of preserved food out there. Running water? Why is that needed? There's plenty of bottled water out there and he doesn't really need to smell good for anyone. All of the negative reviews come from people who didn't want a comedy- they want another post-apocalyptic soap opera à la (Walking Dead/Revolution/The 100/Z Nation/Falling Skies/Lost/Jericho). This show is literally refreshing right now. I hope this show doesn't get canceled- it'll run out of content after a season or 2 more but I just like seeing Will Forte is a walking cartoon and I like his humor.

Daft Apocalyptic Comedy
deepfrieddodo24 January 2024
A unique comedy series that may take some getting accustomed to. When it does eventually find its footing, it is consistent and enjoyable as the titular lead transitions well into a great character, from an unpromising beginning.

Daft humour perfectly suited to the isolated, lovable losers. Idiocy and outlandish characters are the driving force, particularly by Forte and Schaal, which is well foiled by a progressively growing cast of straight-characters who fluctuate in seriousness depending on context. It does occasionally dip into gross-out humour, especially towards the end, which is just unpleasant to watch and not at all funny.

This is all mixed in with plots that can delve into deeper contexts, dealing with loss on a global scale. Some of the relationship building is excellent, and redemption arcs can be enjoyable, most notably the lead. Settings and locations are kept fresh across seasons, giving an opportunity to explore new plots between the characters.

It does lose its way in the final season, with weak characters joining. Some of these are for arcs of only a few episodes, establishing themselves in a spotlighted background episode, then moving on briefly after with little impact to the story. Whilst there are great cameos, Armisen joining the cast was a little far as he sticks to his usual one-dimensional irritant of a character. Characters in general lose their charm in the final season, with plots repeatedly revolving around the same flaws; Carol being jealous for a daft reason can only be funny for a limited occurrence.

Ignore the bad reviews...This show is hilarious!
rickyscouture9 October 2015
I suppose it's expected that a show this unique is going to have its fair share of love/hate responses, but I'm extremely surprised to see it get this much criticism.

My suggestion for the detractors out there is, because it's a comedy, just let go of the OCD nature of trying to dissect what is and isn't realistic in a doomsday scenario and just follow along with the show's humor. Don't overthink it.

Too many reviews are criticizing needless things, like; "Where's the abandoned cars in traffic?", "Where are all the bodies?", etc...But those things are completely unnecessary in terms of buying the show's premise. I think they did the right thing to not edge themselves out with grim imagery. It doesn't need a drama element.

It's supposed to be funny, and for that reason they had to make the decision (and rightfully so) to dismiss the typical and obvious aspects of a last-man-on-earth scenario and just go straight for the comedy. If they didn't, none of the humor would land as quickly and easily as it does.

Personally, I think this is one of the funniest and most interesting shows I've seen in a long time. It's rare to have a comedy nowadays that's so quotable and full of brilliant one liners, and because the characters and the situations they find themselves in are so strange, what comes from it is an incredibly original and fresh show with the potential for many future seasons of hilarious moments.

So if you're at all reading this review and are comparing it to other reviews to see if this show is worth watching, I suggest you just watch this show and see for yourself. I, for one, love it, and can't imagine how someone wouldn't. If it's not for you, you'll know instantly...But if it is, you just found a gold mine that will have you in laughing out loud at least a dozen times an episode. Definitely recommend!

Very funny but not usually sitcom stuff
mysecrets1233 June 2015
I have a hard time understanding why people do not like this show? I guess a lot of people do not understand the kind of British intelligence humor. I am shocked to see the negative reviews. This is one of the most hilarious sitcoms I have seen in a very long time. It's smart and entertaining. It's not for people that like cheap laughs like in many cheaper sitcoms. I really hope that they will renew this sitcom for season 2. The actors did an amazing job and the plot, even though I think if went too fast, was very entertaining and creative. Overall, all my friends that saw this show, found it to be hilarious. If you like more intelligent humor, then this show is for you. If you are used to cheap sitcoms with cheap laughs then this show is not for you.

Worth the try, if you can make it to the second season
garushia8227 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just gonna resume my review here in the first paragraph, in case you don't wanna read it all. I'd guess Will Forte easily sold the pilot, which is actually very good, but then he just didn't know what to do with it as the first season went on. If you're into stupid comedies and you can make it to second season, it might be worth you're while.

This series had me in the first 3 minutes of the first episode, it was really funny up to the 3rd episode. First of, I don't know why it's called "Last man on Earth", since there are 3 male characters.

The main character is a stupid idiot but he's got some personality, you can laugh at his mistakes, but as the episodes go on, he also starts becoming an asshole, and his stupidity goes from funny to annoying. Suddenly the series starts looking like a sitcom, same format (without the audience laughs), all of the 6 characters are stupid, and the "end of the world" scenario gets basically forgotten.

Seems like it really sucks, so why am I giving it a "6"? I gave it a chance and turns out the second season is pretty good. It still feels like a sitcom, but the protagonist goes back to being likable, and the show starts to take itself a bit more seriously. Just a bit. Looks like the producers decided to view the critics about the show and "fix" it.

Hate is not a strong enough word.
abondgirl5 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have never written a show review before, but I was shocked by how much I actively disliked this show. Maureen's critic review on Huntington Post is absolutely perfect, in my opinion.

For a comedy, to me, the main characters were extremely unlikable and unfunny. Phil is a lazy, self pitying, boring jerk. I loved other reviewers references to him as a "Charles Manson" wannabe. Maureen also referred to him as "BEARDO" which made me laugh. It's too bad there were so few laughs in watching Last Man on Earth. The humor was sophomoric, scatological and sometimes mean. If you like watching a grown man throwing balls all over the place, crashing cars, trashing a house and using the swimming pool as a bathroom, then maybe this show will appeal to you. I thought the show would improve with the introduction of the other character, but it didn't. It got worse.

I would not watch this show again if it were the Last SHOW on Earth.
