After a couple of failed attempts to launch a film franchise, Legendary and Capcom are currently in development for a new film that will be based on the popular fighting game Street Fighter. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme has its share of fans and although the movie displays some cheesy fun (thanks to Raul Julia’s over-the-top megalomaniac portrayal of M. Bison), the movie series would not get another film until the attempted grittier take with 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The game franchise, on the other hand, continues to thrive as the Street Fighter franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide, helping to keep the fighting game genre alive and well since the 80s.

Despite recent reassurances that everything was on track, Legendary and Capcom's Street Fighter reboot has been hit with a major setback.
According to THR, directors Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed recent horror hit Talk To Me - have parted ways with the project.
The report notes that "scheduling is partly to blame," as Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin shooting the movie fairly soon, and the Philippous had shifted their focus to what will now be their next project, Bring Her Back, which is scheduled to start production later this month in Australia.
It sounds like there might be a little more to this parting of ways than has been disclosed, but either way, it's a shame that the Philippou brothers will no longer take the helm, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the film during a recent interview.

The streets are looking decidedly empty for Danny and Michael Philippou. Legendary initially announced its plan to adapt Capcom’s iconic fighting game series, Street Fighter, for both film and television. Known for their surprise horror hit Talk to Me, the Australian twin brothers were chosen to direct this highly anticipated project. However, recent developments have altered those plans. Citing scheduling conflicts, sources indicate that Legendary and Capcom wanted production to commence sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, the Philippou brothers had other commitments, specifically their upcoming film Bring Her Back, in collaboration with A24. This project, starring Sally Hawkins and Billy...

The directing team behind Talk To Me have departed the Street Fight movie, over scheduling problems. More here.
Over a year since they were announced as the directors of a new Street Fighter project, Danny and Michael Philippou – aka RackaRacka – have exited the film. Scheduling conflicts are said to be the issue, with Legendary Entertainment keen to move the project immediately on whereas in the short term, the Philippou brothers are committed to make Bring Her Back for A24. That’s a film which is set to enter production imminently.
All puns about knockout blows aside, this report is something of a setback for the project. The Philippous are riding high off the success of their last project, 2023’s body horror success, Talk To Me, and seemed like an excellent fit for a film set in the world of Street Fighter. Not only were the brothers able to make a...

Scheduling is partly to blame, according to sources. Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin sooner than later. The Philippous, however, shifted focus to Bring Her Back, which reteams with their Talk to Me studio A24. That project, which will star Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt, begins shooting later this month in Australia.
Street Fighter is now looking for a new filmmaker.

Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. The last film on that list is the one that’s going to be made first, and just last month we learned that two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins of The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine has signed on to star in Bring Her Back.
