On the whole, 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo' is one of the weakest of the Scooby Doo shows. It did though have a very watchable first season, with the best episodes actually being very good and only one episode being below average. After the first season, the show very quickly went downhill and never really got better despite some watchable shorts here and there. Shaggy and Scooby were always the most interesting characters and didn't mind that they were main protagonists, did mind though that the other protagonist is one of the main reasons as to why Season 2 onward did not work.
To my surprise, "Scooby Ghosts West"/"Swamp Witch"/"Waxworld" was a very watchable triple bill of the show. None of the three shorts are my definition of great, but this triple bill does feature two of the better Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy shorts (especially "Swamp Witch") and even the weakest ("Waxworld") is a long way from being one of the show's worst. Some of the usual problems are here, but so are some improvements that were not really repeated enough in the show.
Absolutely loved the settings in all three, which were very spooky and atmospheric. All three are ones that give off a real classic Scooby Doo vibe, especially "Swamp Witch's" swamp setting that gave me a "Which Witch is Which" ('Scooby Doo Where are You') vibe. The backgrounds are much improved here compared to most shorts, with "Scooby Ghosts West" having some lovely spooky details. Casey Kasem and Don Messick both give spirited voice work and the theme tune is catchy.
Did also think that the villains were among the best of all the show's shorts. The swamp witch making the biggest impression and very reminiscent of the villains seen in the older Scooby Doo shows. The Wax Master was also the best thing about "Waxworld" and had a classic Scooby Doo vibe, though maybe more could have been done. There are amusing moments, especially in "Swamp Witch" with Shaggy as a frog and Scrappy's "Gnome Federation" line. Plus there is a good deal of spookiness, especially in "Scooby Ghosts West", the haunting elements being suitably creepy. Though this was an aspect done better in 'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show's' "Scoobygeist".
Having said all of that, all three shorts are very thin in plotting, especially "Waxworld" which also felt over-stretched, and the action is too Tom and Jerry-ish and lacks variety.
While there are amusing moments, there is nothing hilarious. The character animation is still irregular. And Scrappy is overused to main character effect and very annoying from his negative traits being overdone, his ability to make things worse than they already are being especially prominent in "Waxworld".
Summing up, surprisingly not bad and was expecting a lot worse. Not much mind blowing at the same time though. 6/10.
