Exclusive: XYZ Films has hired Pulsar Content co-founder Marie Garrett as SVP sales and acquisitions to handle multi-territory sales with a particular focus on co-productions.

The Paris-based executive will report to XYZ partners Nate Bolotin and Aram Tertzakian. Garrett is no longer with Pulsar Content, which she co-founded with Gilles Sousa, serving as managing director since 2019.

The devil is in the details this summer as The Ritual, a harrowing supernatural horror rooted in historical fact, arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 30 May. Starring screen icon Al Pacino and genre regular Dan Stevens, the film is inspired by the infamous case of Emma Schmidt, whose documented exorcisms in 1928 remain some of the most chilling accounts in American religious history.

Directed by David Midell and co-written with longtime collaborator Enrico Natale, The Ritual promises to deliver a grounded yet terrifying portrait of spiritual warfare. Pacino steps into the role of Father Theophilus Riesinger, a German-American priest whose real-life attempts to banish the demonic from Schmidt’s tormented body became legend within Catholic and paranormal circles alike. Stevens portrays Father Joseph Steiger, a younger priest whose scepticism and fractured past make him a reluctant ally in the fight for Emma’s soul.

Al Pacino has played the Devil before (in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate), and earlier this year we learned that he would be playing an enemy of the Devil in the exorcism horror film The Ritual. Taking on the role of a troubled priest, Pacino stars in the film alongside Dan Stevens of Abigail and Godzilla x Kong, who also plays a troubled priest. We’ll get to see how well this troubled duo fares against Satan when XYZ Films gives The Ritual a North American theatrical release on June 6th, with Altitude giving audiences in UK and Irish cinemas the chance to see the movie a week earlier, on May 30th. Weapons Trailer: "From New Line Cinema and Zach Cregger, the wholly original mind behind Barbarian, comes a new horror/thriller: Weapons.

When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.

Cregger directs from his own screenplay, and also produces alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin executive producing. The filmmaker’s creative team behind the camera includes director of photography Larkin Seiple, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Joe Murphy and costume designer Trish Sommerville. Guy Danella has been named president of film at XYZ Films, overseeing theatrical production and acquisition. Danella’s previous producing credits include Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan and Violent Night starring David Harbour, both released through Universal Pictures.

Danella’s first project with XYZ is The Trip, a remake of Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 Norwegian thriller Onde Dager, originally financed by XYZ. The story follows a married couple retreating to a remote cabin under the pretense of saving their marriage. Both secretly plan to kill the other before unexpected visitors arrive. Jorma Taccone directs the adaptation, which features Juliette Lewis, Timothy Olyphant, Jason Segel, and Samara Weaving. The film is in post-production.

XYZ Films has hired former 87North and Studio 8 executive Guy Danella to the new position of president of film to lead a slate of high-end theatrical genre films.

Danella will oversee acquiring and producing films. The roster includes Jorma Taccone’s The Trip starring Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, and Juliette Lewis, which is in post and is the English-language remake of Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 Norwegian action comedy I Onde Dager. XYZ Films produces with David Leitch’s 87North and is financing, as it did on the original.

The collaboration was instrumental in XYZ Films bringing in Danella.

Ahead of the film’s release this June, XYZ Films has released a new teaser for the upcoming religious horror film, this time showing a glimpse of an exorcism led by Al Pacino’s Father Theophilus Riesinger, who performed the real-life exorcism in 1928.

You probably know about a relatively new trend of horror adaptations of popular children’s classics. And while this isn’t something completely new, the number of such films we’ve been seeing in recent years is over the top.

And while most of these films targeted stories that were, at one point or another, adapted by Disney, the majority were actually based on popular children’s classics or fairytales. A new horror adaptation is coming up, and while there is a Disney classic retelling the same story, this one will actually be based on a very old tale.
