The Most Precious of Cargoes, the first animated feature from Oscar-winning French director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), will open this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is a 2D animated adaptation of the best-selling book by French author Jean-Claude Grumberg. Set during World War II, it tells the story of a French Jewish family deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the death camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his baby twins out into the snow, where he’s discovered by a childless Polish couple living deep in the forest.
Hazanavicius presented the film as a work-in-progress at Annecy two years ago. French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant narrates the film with voice acting from Dominique Blanc, Denis Podalydès, and Grégory Gadebois. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) composed the score. Animation is from 3.0 Studio – formerly Prima Linea — the group behind the...

A new restoration of the 1959 horror film on Blu-ray and DVD, and making its UK digital debut, Horrors Of The Black Museum, starring Michael Gough and directed by Arthur Crabtree (Fiend Without a Face), marked the first film in the “Sadian Trilogy”, followed by the Hammer favourite Circus of Horrors and Michael Powell’s infamous Peeping Tom – introducing cinema audiences to a more shocking and salacious brand of onscreen horror.
A series of grisly, macabre murders sweep London and leave Scotland Yard completely baffled. Bancroft, an evil crime journalist, is hypnotising his assistant to commit murders using items curated in his own personal “Black Museum” – inspired by the infamous real-life collection of weapons and torture instruments used by criminals. Using these murders to fuel his own crime stories, Bancroft delights in the Yard’s embarrassment.

Earlier this year, Sony / Screen Gems announced that they would be giving the horror film Horrorscope a theatrical release on June 28, 2024. But in late October, Paramount announced that they were moving A Quiet Place: Day One from its previously announced March 8, 2024 release date to June 28. So it’s no surprise to hear (via Borys Kit) that Screen Gems has decided to shift Horrorscope forward to May 10th. Thanks to A Quiet Place: Day One, we’re going to see Horrorscope a month earlier.

Cobweb begins a week before Halloween when Peter is woken up by the sound of knocking seemingly coming from inside his bedroom wall. You can’t blame him for being creeped out, with its peeling paint and backyard full of rotting pumpkins the house already looks like something out of a horror movie. And then there’s that weird bulging thing the walls in his room do while he’s sleeping.
We also quickly learn that he has no friends and gets bullied at school. His parents Carol and Mark also won’t let him dress up for Halloween, something that may be related to the disappearance of a young girl a few years ago. Unsurprisingly they also don’t believe him about the knocking.

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel of the same title, Netflix released the survival thriller Bird Box in 2018, featuring Sandra Bullock in the lead role. This film explored the themes of complexities in human nature, grief and trauma acting as an evil force, and the relentless pursuit of survival. By portraying a nightmarish apocalypse, the film effectively highlights the inner demons faced by the protagonist. However, the spinoff movie Bird Box: Barcelona, which maintains a strong connection with its predecessor, introduced a touch of innovation to the storyline.
The core of Bird Box: Barcelona revolves around Sebastian (Mario Casas), a survivor who embarks on a harrowing journey of self-discovery, questioning whether he is destined to save or destroy humanity. The spinoff film presented an intriguing premise by depicting the global impact of the unseen and unknown entity in the film. The plot unfolded in the European setting of Barcelona, showcasing...

Sawyer and Raye Levine Spielberg are set to star in the indie dark comedy thriller, Pink Flags, written and directed by Misha Calvert.
The real-life married couple will play opposite each other as a feisty figure skater named Liberty (Raye), who turns the tables on an inept stalker (Sawyer) while preparing for a high-stakes competition. Production started this month in New York City.
The short film calls upon the female gaze to help audiences connect to the emotional and psychological experience of stalking and assault, while using dark humor and a captivating aesthetic in the style of classic 1970s paranoia cinema.
“I think it’s so interesting how [Pink Flags] plays with the line between spectator and voyeur,” Levine Spielberg said about the themes of the script. “The main character, this fiercely-independent free bird, finds it more comforting to gaslight herself than pronounce herself a victim.”

2023 marks another year where the Academy Awards have shuttered horror from the competition, but genre fans know better than to expect anything less. Although there have always been exceptions in the past, such as "The Exorcist," "The Fly," and "Get Out," the Oscars' track record speaks for itself. But the truth is that horror folks don't really need the attention of the prestigious awards body when they have a better outlet to see their favorites receive some industry recognition.
If you're a horror nerd, then the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards is where you want to be paying attention. Although the famed magazine started this back in the '90s, it's only been in the past few years that they've started making it a yearly tradition. On top of that, the one-hour ceremony, which usually airs on Shudder, is curated for horror folks by horror folks. Where else are you going to...

The Royal Opera House has confirmed it has ended its sponsorship relationship with Bp after more than three decades.
The major move comes after the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Portrait Gallery have cut ties with Bp in recent years. The BFI, National Theatre, National Gallery and Tate Galleries have also all previously rejected oil company sponsorship.
A spokesman for the venue in London’s Covent Garden said: “We are grateful to Bp for their sponsorship over 33 years which has enabled thousands around the country to see free opera and ballet through our Bp Big Screens.
“Over the past three years, Bp’s support has focused on sustainability initiatives, supporting the Royal Opera House’s recovery post-pandemic and supporting our drive towards net zero.
“We would like to thank Bp for their support, but agreed that the partnership would not extend beyond December 2022, when Bp’s contract came to an end.

Matthew Fox kept a mental checklist of things he’d like to accomplish in his career, and once every gig had been crossed out, he made a decision to “walk away from the storytelling business.”

Warning: contains some plot details for The Lazarus Project
Writer Joe Barton came up with the idea for new Sky series The Lazarus Project in 2016 after reading an article about a Russian submariner narrowly averting the start of a nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. 2016 was also the year of the UK’s Brexit referendum, Donald Trump’s US presidential election, and the death of David Bowie, so it’s probably no accident that Barton was thinking about the end of the world.
By the time the seven-part sci-fi thriller began filming in January 2021, Coronavirus had changed the global situation so thoroughly that our 2016 fears seemed almost quaint. “It was the height of lockdown,” Barton remembers, “and the show was originally called ‘Extinction’. They gave all the crew members face masks branded with the name of the show, so we had all of these people walking around South Wales...

More than a decade after the end of “Lost,” actor Matthew Fox has returned to TV with apocalyptic thriller “Last Light,” which world premiered Friday at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
The show, which will stream on Peacock and is produced by MGM Intl. TV Productions, envisions a society plunged into chaos when oil supplies are jeopardized. Fox plays one of the world’s leading petro-chemical engineers, while “Downton Abbey’s” Joanne Froggatt plays his wife. In amongst the wider crisis is a battle to save their family.
At a press conference in Monte-Carlo Saturday, Fox addressed his break from the business. Since “Lost” ended in 2010, he hasn’t appeared in another TV series, and after a string of movies, including “World War Z,” “Extinction,” and, finally, “Bone Tomahawk,” which he shot in 2014, he hasn’t acted at all.

The end of Peaky Blinders creates a difficult gap to fill. Until the feature film arrives to continue the Shelby family’s story, what other series combines its violent swagger and period style with spirits, ghosts and political history? It might be impossible to match the unique combination of larger-than-life characters and quotable dialogue in Steven Knight’s BBC gangster drama, but these recent British TV series will scratch some of that itch while each offering something unique of their own. Add your own recommendations below.
Gangs of London
Don’t be misled by the title, said our reviewer, this Sky Original is no clichéd cockney geezer-pleaser. It’s a stunning, complex drama with an excellent cast, thrilling action and ambitious scope, and one of the very best shows to come out of the UK in recent years. It’s also extremely violent, so those of a sensitive disposition, consider yourself warned.

Chip ‘n Dale are back, but this time they’re coming with a bevy of self-referential jokes about animation.
Disney+ unveiled the first trailer for “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” on Tuesday, but this is far from your standard live-action/CG hybrid family film. The new movie hails from director Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island fame and stars John Mulaney as Chip and Andy Samberg as Dale, telling a story that finds the duo living amongst cartoons and humans in Los Angeles – including familiar faces like Roger Rabbit.
The story takes place in real-time as it picks up decades after Chip ‘n Dale found success with their Disney cartoon, with the two having taken different paths. Chip is living a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman, while Dale has had “CGI surgery” and works the convention circuit to relive his glory days. But when a former castmate disappears,...

Everyone loves a good deal, and over the past few months, all the major players in the gaming industry have been doing their best to ensure that folks don’t have to shell out too much money to enjoy some top tier titles. Be it Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or a whole host of other companies, we’ve seen a lot of discounts and sales lately covering tons of different games across many, many genres.
Perhaps the most generous, however, has been Sony, who consistently offer up new deals that are simply too good to resist, and today is no different. Currently, there are 67 – yes, 67 – games available on the PlayStation 4 that can be yours for less than $5. And while some of these may be forgettable titles that didn’t make much of an impact upon their release, there are certainly a few gems here that are well worth the price they’re selling for.

The Czech filmmaker follows women from the Extinction Rebellion movement in her latest episodic project. Czech documentary-maker Andrea Culková — behind Sugar Blues, a documentary “thriller” about the negative effects of sugar, and the meta-art docu-essay H*art on — is currently readying her first fiction feature, The Fragile Beauty of Masculinity (read our report) while also working on a new docu-series, Love & Rage, produced by the Czech outfit Duracfilm. The series is set to map the environmental-activist movement Extinction Rebellion. The director has already finished the series’ first instalment, titled Grief, which follows the Czech women who are part of the movement. Culková avoids the pondering of statistics and unfavourable prognosis to focus instead on emotions, as, in her own words, “anxiety stemming from environmental crisis gives rise to new rebels”. She notes that the film is primarily about women because while investigating emotions, women perceive and experience the...
