Good pilot for family drama series
neil-47622 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In the late 1900s, teacher Elizabeth Thatcher abandons her privileged background to teach in a mining community which has recently lost many of its menfolk to a mining tragedy.

The setting is different, but the many other similarities between the series for which this is a pilot and The Little House On The Prairie (nice wholesome folk battling nature and sometimes bad people) mean that it is no surprise to encounter the name Michael Landon (in this case Junior) on the credits, both producing and directing.

The period detail is good, the characters are well-drawn and engaging, and the drama is effective. This is good, decent, family drama.

when calls the heart

The directing, acting and production exceeds anything I have ever watched before. It elicits every emotion and the quality of every scene is beautiful and complete. The actors chosen for this show are perfect to their character. The sequence of event gives a variety to the show so that in a small amount of time a lot is accomplished within the time frame. Elizabeth is beautiful, sweet and spunky and Jack is, of course, handsome and captivating, in and out of uniform. The children show such talent and are believable. I have watched the shows that I recorded over and over and I have to say, that it is the most anticipated show for me, and far exceeds anything else hallmark has done with the exception of Anne of Green Gables.

Spoiled

Warning: Spoilers
When calls the heart was a heartwarming show that was based on Janette Oke's books.

It was the story of a mountie and a young school teacher who moved out west to fulfill her dreams.

Well drop that storyline because now this is teacher who spends more time in the saloon with her new love, the saloon owner than she does with her son. She previously married the Mountie but he was killed off and then she found out she was pregnant.

Her behavior is no way in line with acceptable teacher behavior in early 1900's. The show that was loved and gave heartwarming feelings is no more.
