In the late 1900s, teacher Elizabeth Thatcher abandons her privileged background to teach in a mining community which has recently lost many of its menfolk to a mining tragedy.
The setting is different, but the many other similarities between the series for which this is a pilot and The Little House On The Prairie (nice wholesome folk battling nature and sometimes bad people) mean that it is no surprise to encounter the name Michael Landon (in this case Junior) on the credits, both producing and directing.
The period detail is good, the characters are well-drawn and engaging, and the drama is effective. This is good, decent, family drama.
