For the past nigh-on two decades, news of a new James Cameron movie has generally meant news of a new Avatar movie. But whilst cinema's self-proclaimed 'King Of The World' is still committed to taking audiences to the alien world of Pandora for the foreseeable future, he has just added something new — and something very different — to his pipeline. Per Deadline's reporting, the Aliens and Terminator mastermind has snapped up the rights to Charles Pellegrino's upcoming historical book Ghosts Of Hiroshima, and will use that — as well as Pellegrino's previous non-fiction book The Last Train From Hiroshima — as the basis for a single feature about the atomic bomb drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Described by Cameron himself as an "uncompromising theatrical film", The Last Train From Hiroshima — which will reportedly shoot as soon as Avatar production permits — will pivot around the remarkable true story of a Japanese man who,...

Steady your sandworms and sound the space bagpipes — Dune news coming through! It's been an interesting few months for fans of the Dcu (that's the Dune Cinematic Universe), with confirmation coming back in April that a Dune Part Three is officially in the works at Legendary, and then further reports in June placing an 'Untitled Event Film' from director Denis Villeneuve in Warner Bros.' slate for December 2026. Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair for their "Little Gold Men" podcast, Villeneuve has confirmed that Dune: Messiah is currently being written — and, more importantly, the Quebecois filmmaker's third trip to Arrakis will also be his last.
When asked about his progress on a follow-up to Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve — who says he sees Dune: Messiah as its own thing and his first two Frank Herbert adaptations as a self-contained diptych ("It's not like a trilogy") — revealed his desire to exit...

This House Of The Dragon review contains spoilers.
Exhaustively researched and extensively detailed, Annie Jacobsen’s book, Nuclear War: A Scenario, presents what a 24-hour period during a hypothetical nuclear exchange would look like. As the nukes begin to fall on the United States, Russia, Western Europe, and the Korean Peninsula, Jacobsen imagines what must be going through the heads of the politicians, soldiers, and civilians about to be vaporized. Most of those thoughts amount to: This wasn’t supposed to happen. Nuclear deterrence was supposed to hold.
Westeros, of course, has its own version of nuclear deterrence in the form of dragons. While not nearly as destructive as Oppenheimer’s offspring, the children of House Targaryen are powerful enough to never use. As Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) herself said in last week’s House of the Dragon: “If dragons begin fighting dragons, we invite our own destruction. Fear of it is,...

Warner Bros has announced that Denis Villeneuve’s next film will release in December 2026. There’s speculation that the director could be making Dune: Messiah next after all…
Not so long ago, director Denis Villeneuve had said that he wanted to take a break from the sands of Arrakis before he made his trilogy-closing sequel to Dune: Part Two.
Over the weekend, however, there has been growing speculation that Villeneuve may make Dune: Messiah next after all.
On the 26th June, Warner Bros announced a couple of films on its upcoming slate, neither of which are titled. One is an ‘event film’ directed by Villeneuve and scheduled for the 18th December 2026. The other, per The Hollywood Reporter, is another film in the MonsterVerse franchise, following this year’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire; that one’s due out on the 26th March 2027.
There’s nothing official to suggest that...

In a move that has electrified the sci-fi community, Warner Bros. has announced a December 18, 2026 release date for what is widely believed to be “Dune 3,” the highly anticipated conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series. This announcement comes on the heels of “Dune: Part Two’s” resounding success at the global box office.
Villeneuve, a three-time Oscar nominee, has been deeply immersed in the world of Arrakis since his 2021 adaptation of “Dune.” The sequel, released in 2024, has further cemented the franchise’s popularity, grossing approximately $711.8 million worldwide and earning critical acclaim with a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed that the 2026 slot is for “Dune 3,” industry insiders suggest that the studio is eager to capitalize on the franchise’s momentum. The third installment is expected to adapt “Dune Messiah,” Herbert’s 1969 sequel, and bring closure to Villeneuve’s epic narrative.

As Duke Leto Atreides once sort of said, "A great director doesn't seek to make movies — he's called to it." And speaking of great directors, perpetually booked and busy Quebecois auteur Denis Villeneuve is already back at it and gearing up for his next film. As reported by Deadline, the _Blade Runner 2049_filmmaker has been revealed to be the helmsman of Warner Bros. 'Untitled Event Film', slated for release in December 2026.
Now, Villeneuve is a man with many project plates spinning, including a long-gestating adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's sci-fi Rendezvous With Rama and a recently announced cinematic take on Annie Jacobsen's speculative non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario. However, according to Deadline's sources, Warner Bros. and Legendary are holding that coveted December launch date in the hopes another hotly anticipated Villeneuve adaptation, Dune: Messiah, will fill it. The trade outlet's reporting at the very least confirms that...

To close out the week, Warner Bros. and Legendary have dated a pair of upcoming releases: an untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film and the next installment in the MonsterVerse series, a.k.a. Godzilla x Kong 3.
First up, the untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film has been dated for December 18, 2026.
While we were previously under the assumption that Villeneuve was developing a drama film based on the nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario as his next film, both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline now believe that he's shifted gears back to the sandy dunes of Arrakis and that the December date is actually being reserved for Dune: Part Three (rumored title Dune: Messiah), which will be his next project.
However, before they can formally announce the film and its now-booked release date, Villeneuve will have to lock the script, which, as far as we know, is close to finished as he...

A bit of exciting release date news from Hollywood this evening. Warner Bros has set a new release date for the next Denis Villeneuve movie. It will be opening in theaters nationwide on December 18th, 2026 - also in IMAX. The only catch so far is they didn't reveal a title or what the movie is, or any details beyond that it is Villeneuve's next. One rumor is could actually be Dune 3 - also known as Dune: Messiah, which is apparently being prepared & pushed ahead. The other possibility is an already-in-the-works adaptation of the book Nuclear War: A Scenario, a chilling look at what might actually happen if a nuke went off. Though of course there's a possibility it might end up being something else entirely different. Villeneuve was already quoted during the Dune 2 press tour saying that he wanted to make something else other than (another) Dune next,...

Warner Bros. has slated an “Untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film” for a December 18, 2026 release, leading some to wonder whether this could be Dune 3.
According to Deadline, they’re still working on the script for Dune 3, which is said to be an adaptation of Dune Messiah, and locking in the cast, so it’s entirely possible this new project could be Villeneuve’s final movie in the franchise. That said, the director has previously admitted that he wanted to take a break from Arrakis after spending the last six years working on the first two movies.

Let the speculation begin. The “Untitled Event Film” Warner Bros had dated for December 2026 now is being billed as a “Denis Villeneuve Event Film,” and sources said the studio and Legendary are holding the date with expectations that he wraps up the spectacular trilogy with Dune 3.
Hurdles still have to be cleared as they’re still working on script and locking cast, but it is the project Villenueve has been working on.
The studio and producer also has set a March 26, 2027, date for their other major franchise, the next installment of the Godzilla-Kong saga. Right now, no comment from Warner Bros or Legendary, but stay tuned for more.

Warner Bros. has announced a slew of changes to their release schedule, most notably slotting an untitled event film from Legendary and “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve for Dec. 18, 2026 in IMAX.
Following the massive success of “Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve entered into talks with Legendary for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Pulitzer Prize finalist “Nuclear War: A Scenario.” It’s not yet clear if that project will land in this new release slot.
Jacobsen’s book “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.”
Legendary is also working with Villeneuve to develop a third “Dune” film. “Dune: Part Two,” starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson,...

Screenwriter Eric Roth has written an adaptation of the sci-fi short story called I Am Waiting For You, reportedly for Dune director Denis Villeneuve.
Having made what is currently the highest grossing film of 2024, Dune: Part Two, the logical question is: what does director Denis Villeneuve make next? There’s been talk about turning his Dune saga into a trilogy with Dune: Messiah, but the filmmaker has previously said “it would be healthy” to make something slightly different before he returns to Arrakis.
Among the potential films we know about there’s his long-discussed Cleopatra epic; an adaptation of Arthur C Clarke’s sci-fi novel Rendezvous With Rama, an adaptation of the non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario.
Then there’s a slightly more mysterious sci-fi film said to be “about space and time”, written by Eric Roth, who also wrote the adapted screenplay of Rendezvous With Rama. When Roth...
