Hollywood Hist-o-Rama (1961)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Lasting anywhere between three and four minutes, the Hollywood HIST-O-RAMA series shouldn't be looked at as some sort of documentary that's going to tell you everything about the subject. After all, with such a short running time it would be impossible to go into great details about anything but I'm sure people back when this was made would have at least enjoyed them.
The now legendary Erich von Stroheim is the subject of this episode and considering his reputation today, it's interesting to see how they were talking about him in the 60s. For the most part the producers stay away from his more controversial side and instead talk about him being a great director whose vision was kept away from the screen due to the money men in Hollywood. They mention GREED but they don't mention the fact that the studio cut it down so bad. After his directing days they do get into his acting credits and again the documentary looks at it in a very favorable way. As I've said in countless shorts from this series, if you're looking a complete documentary then you're not going to find it in these three-minutes but I still find the series interesting just because you get to see how these stars were introduced to people back in the day.
