When a Ping Pong anime series was first announced in early 2014, I had to ask: Why? Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga had already been adapted to film back in 2002. Directed by first-timer Fumihiko Sori with a script by rising star Kankuro Kudo, the film launched the career of actor Shido Nakamura. It even came with songs by Supercar and Boom Boom Satellites. I couldn’t imagine anything better than that. When I learned Masaaki Yuasa was directing the series, I became even more curious – and confused. Yuasa was one of my all-time favorite anime directors (and still is.) His 2007 science fiction series Kaiba changed my vision of what TV anime could be. He would have been a great fit to adapt Yuasa’s epic No. 5 . Instead he was hired to go back over old ground. I didn’t understand why at the time. Now I recognize that of all Matsumoto’s comics,...

From the tip of his pompadour to the heels of his boots there is no mistaking Dandy for a serious man. His adventures include hunting for galactic ramen, brokering peace between clothing-obsessed aliens and participating in a high school musical. So it comes as a surprise that the eleventh episode of Space Dandy , the show that bears his name, is quite serious indeed. It begins with Dandy holding a box he can’t remember acquiring. When his boss Scarlet opens it by mistake, the world turns red and then monochrome. Inside the box is a mysterious book. That’s just the start. “I’m Never Remembering You, Baby” is one of the most unsettling episodes in the series. It portrays Dandy as not foolish but unreliable and vulnerable as well. He travels to a planet that substitutes the show’s typical bright colors for crumbling charcoal architecture. Meanwhile, Dandy’s archnemesis,...

Guess who's drunk — er, starring in his own animated show? More than a decade after hitting theaters in 2010, Edgar Wright's commercial failure turned cult classic "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is getting an official continuation in the form of an anime series. The original movie, which adapts Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic books, centers on the eponymous Mr. Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a 22-year-old under-achieving Toronto musician who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The only catch? To date Ramona, Scott must first battle her seven "evil" exes, who range from egotistical film stars to bassists with vegan superpowers.
One could call "Scott Pilgrim" the "Short Term 12" of comic book films in that it features many actors who've gone on to become far bigger names since its release ... including, amusingly enough, the star of "Short Term 12" itself, Brie Larson. It's also...

It's been over a year since Netflix's live-action adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop" began then ended, but it was clear the project was a misfire long before now. The series was canceled three weeks after premiere, lightning speed even by Netflix standards. It turns out that one of those disappointed was the anime's primary creator, animation director Shinichirō Watanabe (he and his team are collectively credited as the creator "Hajime Yatate").
Before Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" premiered, Watanabe revealed he'd been asked for his input: "I read the initial concept and provided my opinions, but I'm not sure if they will be reflected in the final product." He added that his suggestions being ignored would "leave a bad taste in [his] mouth," but to avoid making the crew's jobs tougher, he would simply hope it "turn[ed] out good." His hopes weren't met.

If you were an unsuspecting late-night Cartoon Network viewer in 2001, you likely witnessed the birth of "Adult Swim." And, if you were there, then it is safe to say that one of your formative introductions to anime involved some loud horns blaring at the stroke of midnight, followed by the funkiest bass strings you'd ever heard. That's when you knew, deep down, that something different was happening.
"Cowboy Bebop" is, without question, one of the most highly regarded anime series of all time. With its rugged, quirky characters, fantastic animation, and epic score, the show has served as a welcome introduction to anime for many fans. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, "Cowboy Bebop" follows a crew of intergalactic bounty hunters as they travel across the galaxy aboard their ship, the Bebop, collecting bounties for the Inter Solar System Police. I consider Masaaki Yuasa one of the greatest anime directors of our time, one of the few who directs, continuously, titles that are addressed to adults and not children or teenagers, who seem to be the industry’s main target. Starting with “Mind Game” and “Kemonozume”, and continuing with “Ping Pong” and “Space Dandy,” I have cherished all of his works I have seen, and as it turns out, “Night Is Short, Walk on Girl” was no exception.
Night is Short, Walk on Girl will be screening at Japan Society on June 17
The story revolves around two people, the Girl With Black Hair and Senpai. The latter is in love with the former, and he has been trying to ask her out for some time, with his place and time of choice being a wedding they both attend, which is also, where the story starts. Anime is not for everybody. However, there are certain emblematic series, like Shinichiro Watanabe’s Cowboy Bebop, that are able to transcend the medium and become pillars of pop culture that are adored by mainstream crowds. Cowboy Bebop is a science fiction series that focuses on a misfit crew of bounty hunters who travel the galaxy to make a big score and survive their own neuroses. Cowboy Bebop’s space setting allows the series to embrace sci-fi archetypes, but the anime is a delirious stew of ingredients that means that riffs on westerns, film noir, and even the horror genre are all fair game. All of these cultural reference points are held together with an electric jazz score that’s as unpredictable as the series’ stories.
Much like the indelible crew of the Bebop, this series plays by its own rules and is thoroughly impossible to define. Netflix’s new...

We get the goods on N0S4A2 when we chat with the star and the minds behind AMC’s horror series at San Diego Comic-Con!
After the breakaway success of The Walking Dead, AMC has gradually turned into more of a home for prestige horror programming. The genre has found new life on television in ways that it never has before. While the works of Stephen King are a constant source of material for horror films and television, his son, Joe Hill, is also no stranger to seeing his works get adapted. One of Hill's most acclaimed novels is N0S4A2, a massive story that covers a decades-long fight between forces of good and evil, all while warping Christmas and its iconography into the stuff of nightmares. With the first season of AMC's television adaptation of N0S4A2 nearly over and the entire thing available on demand,...

Everyone's favorite haunted doll is back! So let’s break down the unleashed ending to the latest The Conjuring film, Annabelle Comes Home.
This article contains major Annabelle Comes Home spoilers.
The Conjuring universe may have started with a restrained haunted house story, but it’s since visited haunted monasteries, tapped into Mexican folklore, and teased a whole world of supernatural entities. The Conjuring universe shows no signs of slowing down, but undoubtedly one of the franchise’s most popular characters is the haunted doll, Annabelle. Annabelle Comes Home is the third film in the Annabelle saga and is easily the craziest offering from any of the Conjuring pictures. It even brings The Conjuring’s Ed and Lorraine Warren back into the mix.
This film tells a fairly self-contained story that's neatly sandwiched between other films in the series, but Annabelle Comes Home still throws a lot at its audience.

We examine the ghastly conclusion to The Curse of La Llorona and what it means for the future of The Conjuring franchise!
This article contains spoilers for The Curse of La Llorona.
The ever-evolving Conjuring universe has slowly grown into over a billion-dollar franchise, which is even more impressive for a series of R-rated horror films. Up until this point, The Conjuring universe has effectively been able to predict which monsters and demonic entities from its core films are deserving of spin-offs and deeper looks, but The Curse of La Llorona takes a decidedly different approach. The Curse of La Llorona’s demonic “Weeping Woman” gets her origins from Mexican folklore, rather than some pre-existing Conjuring film.
La Llorona may market itself as a standalone entry, but it does occupy a space in the same universe as Annabelle, Valak the Nun, and the Crooked Man. While The Curse of La Llorona...

I have to admit, I consider Masaaki Yuasa one of the greatest anime directors of our time, one of the few who directs, continuously, titles that are addressed to adults and not children or teenagers, who seem to be the industry’s main target. Starting with “Mind Game” and “Kemonozume”, and continuing with “Ping Pong” and “Space Dandy,” I have cherished all of his works I have seen, and as it turns out, “Night Is Short, Walk on Girl” was no exception.
“Night is Short, Walk on Girl” is screening at Helsinki Cine Aasia 2019
The story revolves around two people, the Girl With Black Hair and Senpai. The latter is in love with the former, and he has been trying to ask her out for some time, with his place and time of choice being a wedding they both attend, which is also, where the story starts. The Girl, however,...

Fox has decided not to move forward with Lethal Weapon Season 4, cancelling the oft-troubled drama.
Once more, with feeling: we are now officially too old for Lethal Weapon.
TV Line reports that Fox has canceled the drama after three seasons. There will be no more Lethal Weapon Season 4.
Lethal Weapon Season 3 ended on a strong note creatively but audiences didn't respond as well to the third season as they did the first two...at least not in the ratings. The drama began in 2016 as an adaptaion of the feature film franchise and a two-hander starring Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans. Crawford would be replaced by Seann William Scott for season 3 as Lethal Weapon was well known for having issues behind the scenes.
Towards the end of the show’s second season, production rumors began to circulate that there was bad blood between the show’s two leads,...

Crunchyroll Head of Studio Margaret Dean discusses the pivot towards original animated series that capture the freedom of anime.
Crunchyroll has proven itself to be a major player in the anime streaming market. Not only does the service have the largest collection of titles, but the work that they’ve done has helped further push anime into the mainstream and remove its niche status. Crunchyroll may be the home for where most people in America get their anime content, but now Crunchyroll is eager to get into the original content game.
Crunchyroll’s transition into original content feels like a natural progression for the service. Clearly the people at Crunchyroll have their finger on the pulse of what fans are interested in, so why not translate that into new programming? However, curiously, in spite of how Crunchyroll is most people’s home for anime, their original animated content will not be anime,...

James Cameron has been fighting for decadesto bring his ambitious vision of a Battle Angel Alita to life. The project has transformed through the years and while some believed that it would never actually come to fruition, with the help of Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel is now an eye-popping reality. It’s an absolute delight to get thrown into the year 2563 and navigate through the devastated Iron City via Alita’s fresh eyes, but between the class systems, the order of the Hunter-Warrior cyborg assassins, and the rules of Motorball, there’s a lot to get lost in. Hence we’ll break down here the seismic events of Alita: Battle Angel’s ending and what's next for the cyborg.

Roger begins to sweat in this sneak peek from tonight’s all-new episode of Lethal Weapon, “Coyote Ugly."
Lethal Weapon season 3 has been full of curveballs, which is a deviation from previous seasons of the show. The show typically has a go for broke attitude when it comes to the end of the season, but that feels especially prevalent this time around since there are still a number of major storylines and character arcs that need to be put to rest before the season finale.
Most of the heavier, serialized stories in Lethal Weapon have to do with Roger Murtaugh and Wesley Cole’s work in the Lapd, or the complicated personal life that Cole attempts to put back together. That being said, the show has slowly allowed for other characters to step into the spotlight, such as Roger’s wife, Trish. It’s always a pleasure when Trish takes center stage.

It appears Boogiepop And Others Season 2 be necessary to faithfully adapt the original light novel series in full. Already, the official website has confirmed that the anime will be a two-cour season with 18 episodes. But the episodes announced so far in January 2019 do seem to leave room for a full second season. Marking the 20th Anniversary of Kouhei Kadono’s original novel debut, animation studio Madhouse is adapting the story for TV screens as part of Dengeki Bunko’s 25th-anniversary celebration. Director Shingo Natsume of One Punch Man and Space Dandy fame is leading the project while Tomohiro Suzuki […]

Horror icon Lin Shaye stars in a new horror film from the creator of Final Destination, and we’ve got an exclusive look!
It’s always exciting when a horror film can think up a truly unique premise to draw its scares from—though we just as easily love when reliable staples from the genre are reconfigured to popular (and often gruesome) delight. Yet the ideal situation is when the best of both worlds can blend like so much blood and terror, and an old fashioned idea can be spun off in a radically new and exciting direction. That’s exactly what appears to be happening in the upcoming The Final Wish.
The Final Wish taps into that karmic retribution horror that makes the simple monkey's paw archetype still so effective. When Aaron Hammond (Michael Welch) returns home to help his mother (Lin Shaye) after the death of his father,...

It still may be a few years away, but here’s the skinny on everything we know so far about The Venture Bros. season 8.
The Venture Bros. has quietly been plugging along at Adult Swim for over 15 years and it has usurped Aqua Teen Hunger Force as the network’s longest running program. The show’s latest season garnered arguably the greatest acclaim in its history and finally provided answers for some of The Venture Bros.’ longest running questions. While season seven wrapped in October 2018, after your umpteenth binge of the episodes you’re likely hungry for any details about where Team Venture and the show’s large web of supporting characters are headed next.
First, and most importantly, The Venture Bros. season 8 is definitely happening. And while information on The Venture Bros. season 8 is still scarce, but here’s what we do know

There is one thing about anime that is pretty consistent no matter what the content and tone. At some point, you are going to find yourself confused and wondering what just happened and what did you miss. The series Space Dandy is no different. This show throws all types of curve balls at you that force you to figure out the reality. What seems to be real just might not be what it seems. This is the world of anime and those of us who have spent a reasonable amount of time-consuming it simply expects to be thrown a curve

Hulu and Funimation made a massive deal that will put them at forefront of anime content.
Anime in North America has come a long way from being relegated to a dozen VHS tapes in the corner of a rental store in the “Japanimation” section. Not only are there now multiple streaming options for anime fans, but the genre has pierced the mainstream in a number of substantial ways, like Adult Swim’s popular Toonami block and theatrical releases of titles. Competition only continues to heat up between distribution channels like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, but the latter has just made a major power play that should substantially shake things up and also make it a lot easier for people to get the best anime content.
Hulu and Funimation have already been in cooperation with each other, but their latest deal proves they are in it for the long haul.

Still reeling from the intense Overlord ending and trying to put together all of the pieces? Here’s your helpful guide to what happened!
This article contains Overlord spoilers.
Overlord is a beautiful mash-up of genres that will totally catch you off-guard and redefine what can be done with a simple "war film" or "zombie movie." The unabashed b-movie depicts what initially seems to be a grounded story about American soldiers who land in France to cripple German forces on the eve of World War II's D-Day. The soldiers' mission quickly goes awry and the expected Nazi threat unveils itself. However, Overlord takes a big turn when it becomes clear that gruesome Nazi experiments have created something much more dangerous and horrible than ever imagined.
It's easy to let Overlord's addictive, surprising narrative take you over, especially with such captivating monsters, gorgeous cinematography, and bonkers practical effects in play.

Get ready to meet the Nhbpp (aka Stan's latest headache) in this exclusive clip from Stan Against Evil's X-Files infused monster romp.
IFC's Stan Against Evil has turned horror parodies into an art form. The comedy series has successfully lampooned the genre for two seasons and if this preview is indication, the show's upcoming third season will be its most outrageous year yet. The series returns with back-to-back episodes this Wednesday (which also appropriately happens to be Halloween night), but skeptics and believers alike will both have something to look forward to in Stan Against Evil's second episode of this season, "The Hex Files." The installment sees Stan and the rest of Willard's Mill encounter some supernatural investigators that feel very familiar, and we've got an exclusive sneak peek to the mayhem.

Over the course of Stan Against Evil’s first two seasons there have been many odes to classic movie monsters and horror cinema. Werewolves, Satanic children, witches, and even Ouija boards have all been fair game, with the series always finding demented ways to reinvent these beloved tropes.

Recent times have been kind to fans of animation director Yuasa Masaaki. The man has been quite prolific: in 2017 we got two new films from him, and Netflix viewers could start 2018 with his 10-episode-take on Go Nagai's Devilman universe. Better yet: all of these were produced by Choi Eunyoung, who is a kick-ass director herself (just check her Awesome episode of Space Dandy if you don't believe me). Fans in the Netherlands could start 2018 in another way as well: the International Film Festival Rotterdam showed The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl as part of their Maximum Overdive programme, which highlights extreme genre mash-ups of current pop-culture. Netflix just partnered with two big names in anime, and together the three our co-producing more anime to be streamed worldwide. Ann said Netflix, Bones, and Production I.G. all joined forces in a joint deal to strengthen the streaming service's anime lineup.
They certainly appear to be on the right track as they just snagged up the studios responsible for titles like Full Metal Alchemist, Space Dandy, Soul Eater, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Ghost In The Shell, Flcl...I could go on and on.
I'll just leave it at this. Netflix just made a great deal, and if you've loved their original anime offerings so far...you're going to love this collaboration! Also if you haven't seen Devilman Crybaby yet Do That Now!

Beyond Studio Ghibli, a wave of directors and artists ensure that the future’s bright for animation in Japan, Ryan writes...
At its best, anime is diverse, vibrant, unfettered and unpredictable. Look through the history of Japanese animation, and you’ll find stories about baseball, cooking, friendly ghosts, ancient myths, dog detectives and robot cats from the future. You’ll find sci-fi and horror, fantasy and comedy, erotica and historical drama. Just about every country on the planet produces animation of some kind; few broach subjects as varied as the Japanese.
See related Katee Sackhoff interview: Battlestar, Haunting, Statham
In recent years, however, anime has faced threats from multiple angles. First, there’s the threat that will catch up with all of us eventually: time itself. In 2010, Japan lost one of its great storytellers, Satoshi Kon, who made such stunning animated movies as Perfect Blue (one of...

While the Anime genre of television isn’t necessarily huge here in the United States, worldwide it’s one of the most popular forms of media on television, internet, and print. So when something this extraordinary comes along we feel it’s our duty to share it. A man by the name of Thomas Romain is a French artist currently living in Tokyo. Thomas has worked on various anime series such as Symphogear, Space Dandy, Aria, and Basquash!, but his best work is the work he does in the Father and Sons Design Workshop. In a series of tweets called “The Father and

New Manga adaptation One-Punch Man gleefully celebrates and subverts the anime genre. Here's why it's well worth your time...
Anime may have developed a loyal and feverish following outside of Japan since the dawn of high-speed internet but in reality, fans will likely always have to contend with looks of bemused, quiet judgement when their grandparents ask why they’re watching “those funny Asian cartoons again”.
Now and then however, a series will come along with crossover, mainstream appeal that seeps into western pop culture and introduces a new generation of viewers to the world of anime and manga. Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon and Pokémon all found homes on international T.V. Channels, and even casual television watchers are likely familiar with at least one of those franchises, if only because of the “it’s over 9000!” meme. Likewise, it’s no coincidence that Hollywood is currently in...

Earlier this year, Scottish distributor Anime Ltd. released the first 13 episodes of Space Dandy, Watanabe Shinichirô's unbelievably irreverent yet unbelievably good-looking series. At the time I mentioned what a nice catch it was for the young company, and how thrilled I was about the great packaging job their Limited Edition had. Now that I've actually watched the series, I've sobered up a bit on it. This sure will not be to everyone's taste, it is that kind of series. Personally, it is my least favorite Watanabe Shinichirô anime, except for a mere handful of episodes which (I think) are pretty damn great. Rest assured I will be writing a review, but know that Space Dandy is so eclectic that your opinion might (and probably...

Sony has the utmost confidence in the ambitious open-universe title No Man’s Sky and rightfully so. Hello Games is creating a potential masterpiece and even boasts a universe full of explorable space, sea and terrain. Play how you want, do what you want, explore where you want. Such a wide array of promises, how could it possibly come close to achieving everything it claims to be?
No Man’s Sky director Sean Murray states that every world is procedurally generated using a 64-bit seeding key to create every world that the player will discover. This algorithm will allow for a potential 18 quintillion different planets to explore, according to the developers.
Eighteen quintillion, needless to say, is a big number but a number fitting the promise made by Murray during No Man Sky‘s showcase during Sony’s press conference. Murrary zoomed out of Doulinhota, a planet he had discovered just in the showcase,...
