- This experimental short film is based on the poetry chapbook, "Winter's Year," written by Carlee Soeder. The film takes the audience on a journey through heartbreak, depression, and self-discovery. Following the narrator's movement representation of four poems, the film explores the words used to hurt us, the faces we put on for others, the thoughts that trap us inside our heads, and the release of our past selves.
In the first part of the film, titled "The Forest," the narrator experiences the mixed feelings and clouded thoughts that come with the end of a relationship. They struggle with conflicting emotions, reflecting on the good times and the bad times. Through the movement, the audience can feel the tension and confusion that the narrator is experiencing, making us empathize with their situation.
"Green," portrays the masks that we wear around others and the inner mask that we are constantly hiding. The film reflects on how we stifle our own emotions of sadness, anger, and depression until we are unable to hide it any longer. The internal life of the narrator finally reaches out into the physical world and drags the narrator internally into their mind, leading the viewer to "Circling". "Circling" is a deeply moving and thought-provoking exploration of the human mind. Through the use of dance and chanting, this chapter presents a compelling representation of the internal struggle many individuals face when trying to break free from repetitive thought patterns.
After "Circling," the past selves must be symbolically drowned to allow the true self to emerge, leading to "Surfacing." The film's conclusion involves the narrator's decision to let go of the past selves and look toward a revitalized and healed future, ready to explore the world. The film is a beautiful and evocative exploration of the human experience, and it leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.
