Jesse Hutch is fighting for his life against Rusty Nail in “Joy Ride 3,” the most horrortastic installment in the “Joy Ride” series. ShockYa was happy to talk to Hutch about his leadership role in the film, reuniting with Ken Kirzinger and funny horror movies. “Joy Ride 3″ is available for home viewing now. I’ve talked to Ken Kirzinger last week, and from what I’ve heard, the film is going to be even more exciting than the other two. Jesse Hutch: I’m hearing that the word on the street is that that’s correct, apparently [laughs]. It’s one of those things that you never know how people are going to take [ Read More ]

The Joy Ride movies aren’t as much a franchise as they are one luckily decent Paul Walker thriller followed by whatever the hell Joy Ride: Dead Ahead is, but with every intention of keeping the rubber burning, Sharktopus director Declan O’Brien was brought in to create a second sequel so good, the competition would be forced to eat nothing but dust.
O’Brien is more widely known for his work on the latter Wrong Turn movies, films oozing with wild gore, and that signature focus on mutilated body parts certainly makes for some nice bits of roadkill strewn about Slaughter Alley – but does the promise of vile brutality make another horrifying road-trip sound enticing? Not many people were clamoring for Joy Ride 3, yet Twentieth Century Fox took a gamble on this grotesque home release, and while horror fans certainly won’t be hailing the road-raging franchise,...

Lately, I’ve been falling further and further behind on reviews. This is mostly due to the sheer volume of discs that make their way to my doorstep. Couple that with having a hellspawn of a toddler, and getting behind is quite easy. I will still be doing full reviews of discs, but I thought I’d start a weekly column, summing up that week’s Blu-ray releases(At least what I am sent for review). Very rarely do I ask for a DVD, unless it’s something imperative that won’t be making it to Blu, so every now and then a DVD will make its way onto the list, but for the most part, we’ll be tackling the Blu-ray releases, because that’s superior format. This week has quite a few solid releases, worthy of your dollars. I will include links to each disc, so that if...

Here's a lesson from Joy Ride 3: Roadkill. Don't mess with Rusty Nail. It never ends well. The trucker with a sadistic streak is up to his old tricks again when he targets a group of streetcar racers on their way to a rally. In the most graphic of the Joy Ride series, Rusty cranks up the pain and bloodshed as he teaches these young guns the importance of road etiquette.
During a break from filming one of Rusty's kills, actor Ken Kirzinger spoke to FEARnet about putting his own stamp on Rusty Nail, the character's motivations and possibly returning to Camp Crystal Lake.
You played Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs. Jason, and he has a certain demeanor. How did you approach Rusty Nail?
I watched the other two Joyrides. When I read the script, I felt like Rusty had more character in this one. I wanted to play that up.

Absolutely nobody suffers from road rage like Rusty Nail. In 2001's thriller Joy Ride, the growly-voiced trucker taught a trio of travelers a deadly lesson for pulling a prank on him. The direct-to-dvd sequel, Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead found Rusty targeting some youngsters who were stranded and stupidly "borrowed" a car from him. Now, the bloodiest instalment, Joy Ride 3: Roadkill, hits DVD today.
The movie follows a bunch of streetcar racers – Jordan <Jesse Hutch>, Jewel <Kirsten Prout>, Mickey <Ben Hollingsworth>, Alisa <Leela Savasta>, Austin <Gianpaolo Venuta> and Bobby <Jake Manley> - on the way to a rally. A little too cocky for their own good, they commit the ultimate driving sin against Rusty <Ken Kirzinger> and pay the price for their recklessness.
"They speed past him and Rusty takes exception to it," states Hollingsworth during a break on production. "He pulls out in front of them. They are hotshot kids in a new race car and they show him up and speed past him.

Rusty Nail returns this week in Joy Ride 3 and we caught up with the movie’s writer / director, Declan O’Brien, in the latest installment of our Q&A series. In this feature, Declan O’Brien tells us about working with Ken Kirzinger, the challenge of filming stunts centered around a moving truck, and his favorite moment on set:
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Declan. As a horror fan, what did you love about the first Joy Ride movies and Rusty Nail that made you want to take on a new entry in the series?
I’ve been a longtime fan of John Dahl’s work and of course J.J. Abrams so the opportunity to expand on their work was a real pleasure for me. I loved the idea of a killer truck driver with a warped sense of justice. It will make you think...

The Grand Budapest Hotel I just received my copy of The Grand Budapest Hotel yesterday so I haven't had a chance just yet to explore it, though it does look a little light on features. I wonder, will Criterion get their hands on this one too in a couple yearsc Nevertheless, it's still one of the best movies of the year so far.
The Lego Movie Another solid movie, though not one I'm going to add to my collection. Once was enough for The Lego Movie for me, at least right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Warner Bros. does a big awards push at the end of the year for this one, maybe I'll watch it again then.
Picnic at Hanging Rock (Criterion Collection) Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock was one of the entries in the now defunct Movie Club back in 2012 so if you're looking for...

With writer/director Declan O’Brien’s Joy Ride 3: Road Kill releasing to DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday, June 17th, here’s additional coverage stemming from our set visit last summer to the same in Winnipeg, Canada.
Written and directed by O'Brien, whose previous horror entries include the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment features Wrong Turn 3, Wrong Turn 4 and Wrong Turn 5 (as well as Syfy's Sharktopus), Joy Ride 3: Road Kill (review) originated with the 2001 Paul Walker-starring, J.J. Produced by Kim Todd, this installment (which melds the worlds of tuner car racing and road-trip horror) stars Ken Kirzinger (Freddy vs. Jason) as the project's villainous truck driver 'Rusty Nail.’

The world of car racing is already dangerous enough, with the ever present fear of getting into an accident while competing on the track. When something as seemingly trivial as a Rusty Nail is thrown into the car racing equation, people don’t often ponder the effects it can have on the competition’s outcome. But initial looks can be deceiving, which is clearly evident with the return of villain Rusty Nail in 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s upcoming thriller, ‘Joy Ride 3: Road Kill.’ Written and directed by horror filmmaker, Declan O’Brien, ‘Joy Ride 3: Road Kill,’ the second sequel in the hit ‘Joy Ride’ franchise, brought back the mysterious villain [ Read More ]

1971’s Duel revved the engines of cinematic road-ragers everywhere and put many a vicious vehicle on the old highway to hell. What horror fan doesn’t love The Car, Christine, and Death Proof?
Those are classics. But what sets the Joy Ride film franchise apart from the rest is that it’s more about the diabolical driver and less about the terrifying truck. Which is not to say the big rig isn’t badass in its own right, but let’s face it: The 18-wheeler isn’t nearly as fun to chat with as actor and stuntman Ken Kirzinger.
Dread Central: Were you familiar with the Rusty Nail character before stepping into the role?
Ken Kirzinger: I auditioned for Rusty in Joy Ride 2 but didn’t get the part. Instead it went to a good friend, Mark Gibbon, who I ended up stunt doubling for in the movie. So yes,...
