Samuel is worried about his grandmother Lilka. She keeps her health a secret. A visit to the doctor brings a sad certainty, which Samuel must keep to himself. As the birth of his child approaches, he threatens to break under the pressure. On the one hand, Samuel is prepared to do anything to get Saba to agree to the Jewish initiation rites for the baby. On the other hand, he struggles with the idea of leaving his family behind now of all times to go to Japan with Saba.
