Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has clocked a second commanding week at the box office, taking the flick’s worldwide tally to $ 161.6 M. The film’s rollout has been impressive and unconventional, with marketing materials largely aimed at educating audiences about the philosophy behind the movie’s technical ambitions, the prime example being Coogler’s now-viral Kodak explainer video. This has created a community feel around the picture, which has been reflected in the box office. It has also placed a significant spotlight on the film’s DoP, Autumn Durald Arkapaw.
An indie scene vet, Durald Arkapaw previously worked with Coogler on the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever. Some of her other credits include Gia Coppola’s The Last Show Girl, Spike Jonze’s doc Beastie Boys Story, and Marvel’s Loki, for which she was nominated for an Emmy. Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot details from Ryan Coogler‘s “Sinners,” now playing in theaters.
Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw vividly remembers when Ryan Coogler sent her the script for “Sinners.”
It was January 2024, the day before she would start shooting “The Last Showgirl,” and Coogler sent an email seeking her thoughts on the piece, which he’d told her was quite personal to him. She read the script later that night, all in one sitting.
“I was blown away. I had no idea about it being a period piece or that Michael [B. Jordan] would be playing twins,” Arkapaw tells Variety. “I had a huge email that I sent him about my thoughts. He always teases me, because for me to read something all the way through in one pass is more difficult these days, but that’s the kind of script that you just can’t put down.”

Jamie Lee Curtis might not be stepping back into the shoes of Laurie Strode again anytime soon, but the Oscar-winning actress is far from being done with the horror genre. Curtis will star in Sender, a psychological horror film based on the award-winning 2022 short film, shares Deadline.
Russell Goldman is set to direct the movie in his feature directorial debut. He previously directed the indie short Return to Sender, on which the film will be based, and then adapted his short into a 2023 Black List contender.
Sender is already in development. Apart from Curtis, the film stars Severance's Britt Lower, David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil), and Anna Baryshnikov (Love Lies Bleeding).
It follows a woman entangled in a mysterious and dangerous e-commerce scam that quickly becomes very personal, leaving her determined to find out who the anonymous sender is and stop their harassment.

If you were to compile a list of the best parody movies ever made, you would be hard pressed to find one that doesn't include "The Naked Gun" on it. The hilarious riff on procedural cop shows initially started out as "Police Squad!," a hilarious six-episode television comedy series from David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker whose only crime was being ahead of its time. Although the triage had no such luck making it play to audiences on the small screen, the short-lived series proved to be incredibly successful in movie theaters in the form of 1988's "The Naked Gun," which brought back Leslie Nielsen to reprise his role as the bumbling Detective Lt. Frank Drebin.
The David Zucker-directed film not only jumpstarted Nielsen's comedy career after his memorable role in "Airplane!," but it also led to two sequels: "The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear...

Gia Coppola’s drama starring Pamela Anderson peers behind the glamour of ‘the fun capital of the world’, but sin city has long seduced film-makers from Scorsese and Soderbergh to Sean Baker and Baz Luhrmann
(There’s a reason why film-makers are routinely drawn to the glaring, garish lights of Las Vegas: in its spangliest strips, it feels more movie set than city, the kind of place it’s hard to imagine people living everyday lives 24/7. Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl – streaming on Mubi from 18 April – is quite rare in its focus on one such person: Shelly, a dancer in a long-running revue on the Vegas strip, now pushing 60 and at a crossroads when said revue announces its imminent closure. Short and light on plot, it’s a character study built on a poignant night-and-day contrast, as Shelly literally performs a glitzy Vegas dream that all looks a bit...

“Sinners” is about to take a bite out of the spring film calendar in 2025.
Ryan Coogler’s ambitious big swing “Sinners” marks the “Black Panther” director’s first original project, out from under the weight of I.P., since his 2013 Sundance sensation “Fruitvale Station” put him on the map. The 38-year-old mega talent has had an impressive run directing both “Black Panther” movies along with the Rocky spinoff “Creed” (2015), while also producing that film’s two sequels — all major box office coups. But he wrote the Warner Bros. supernatural horror epic “Sinners,” out April 18, from his own idea, and first reactions are already praising a vision that welds classic vampire mythology to the metastasizing racism underlying the mid-century American South.
“Black Panther” and “Creed” star Michael B. Jordan plays dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, each representing their own side of a coin of good and corrupt. They...

Who would have thought that Liam Neeson could be the next Leslie Nielsen? The “Taken” icon and late comedy legend are now sharing more than just initials: Neeson is playing the son of Nielsen’s beloved “The Naked Gun” character Frank Drebin, who Nielsen portrayed in the ’80s TV series “Police Squad!” and original “Naked Gun” film franchise. It’s now Neeson’s turn to be Frank Drebin Jr., yet another hapless detective like his father whose cases always become a comedy of errors.
“The Naked Gun” reboot is directed by “SNL” and The Lonely Island alum Akiva Schaffer, with Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins producing. Schaffer co-wrote the script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Both Schaffer and Daniel M. Stillman executive produce.
“The Naked Gun” stars Neeson as the next generation of Drebins. The official synopsis reads: “Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead...

People often describe the experience of working alongside a group of close-knit collaborators on a film or television show as being like a family. There’s no better way to say it for Billie Lourd regarding her newest credit on Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern.
The comedy reunites the veteran star with her Scream Queens, American Horror Story and American Horror Stories boss Ryan Murphy, who serves as an executive producer of the Max Mutchnick and David Kohan-created series. The latter two TV titans also have a tight connection with Lourd after finding a sweet spot for her on their Will & Grace reboot, playing Fiona, the granddaughter of a character played by her late grandmother, Debbie Reynolds. The legendary actress was a regular on the NBC sitcom as the mother of Debra Messing’s Grace Adler.
But in perhaps the sweetest familial connection, Lourd is the goddaughter of power publicist Simon Halls,...

Pamela Anderson, who was back on screen and all over the awards circuit last year with Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl, said today that “vanity is a prison” as she accepted a Muse Award at New York Women in Film & Television’s 45th annual luncheon ceremony, in her now signature no-makeup look.
The Canadian-born actress opened her remarks with nod to “universal, free and fair healthcare” after noting that her father had just undergone cancer surgery. It went “smoothly and he had all the aftercare he needed,” said Anderson, who has dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship. She mentioned it because her appearance at the event, at Cipriani midtown, had been touch and go given his situation. She thanked “a blessed and generous Canadian health care system.”
She left it there. (U.S.-Canada relations are at a low due to Trump administration tariffs.)

Miley Cyrus has announced her new album, Something Beautiful. The follow-up to 2023’s Endless Summer Vacation, which featured Cyrus’ Grammy-winning hit “Flowers,” will arrive on May 30th via Columbia Records.
While details around the LP are still somewhat slim, Cyrus has unveiled the official artwork and confirmed 13 tracks in the project. Cyrus co-produced the album with Shawn Everett, who notably engineered Kacey Musgraves’ beloved Golden Hour. Something Beautiful is now available for pre-order with a number of CD, vinyl, and box set packages.
“Captured by renowned fashion photographer Glen Luchford, the album artwork features Miley Cyrus draped in archival 1997 Thierry Mugler couture, a striking nod to the album’s bold aesthetic and visual storytelling,” she shared via social media.
Though Cyrus has promised new tracks in Something Beautiful, the aesthetic of the album artwork isn’t unlike that of The Last Showgirl, for which Cyrus contributed an original song titled “Beautiful That Way.

Three months after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is finally nearing a distribution deal. Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and Ld Entertainment are in final talks to take domestic rights on director Bill Condon’s adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, ensuring the Jennifer Lopez-starring drama will see the light of day, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Terms of the deal, including release plans and financial figures, were not disclosed.
The Artists Equity-produced film came into Sundance as one of the festival’s buzzier titles due to its cast and pedigree – Condon was behind acclaimed titles like “Chicago” and “Gods and Monsters” — but it drew mixed reviews at its premiere and major buyers like Netflix passed.
The movie, written and directed by Condon, follows the story of the stage musical closely as it chronicles the relationship between queer hairdresser Luis...

Former Disney Channel star Brenda Song has shared how watching Home Alone with fiancé Macaulay Culkin ruined an annual Christmas tradition for her. Film is so back. Shooting on Kodak film continues to be both a more popular choice among filmmakers and to gather more Oscar prestige. At this year’s Academy Awards Sean Baker’s Best Picture winner, “Anora,” was shot on 35mm by cinematographer Drew Daniels; Brady Corbet’s Best Cinematography winner, “The Brutalist,” was shot on 35mm VistaVision to great aplomb by Dp Lol Crawley; Walter Salles’ Best International Feature Film winner, “I’m Still Here,” was shot on both 35mm and S8mm by cinematographer Adrian Teijido; and the Best Live Action Short winner, “I’m Not a Robot,” was also shot on 35mm.
This year looks set to build on that success. There will be a cohort of prominent movies captured on film from some of the usual analog-loving directors: Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,...

It looks like Netflix's latest sports show is dunking on the competition. Running Point, the latest series from The Sex Lives of College Girls creator and star of The Office Mindy Kaling, only just debuted on February 27, 2025, but it's already become a huge hit with fans. The Kate Hudson-starrer has shot to the top of the U.S. streaming charts in only five days. So far up, in fact, we're going to need a few more good basketball puns to prove it to you.
As it currently stands, Running Point is the number one show currently streaming in the U.S. on Netflix. Who says love and basketball don't mix? The workplace rom-comedy wrapped in a sports jersey has tickled fans' fancy and proven that people want to watch attractive people be funny, partake in physical activity, and maybe fall in love with one another. At least from time to time.
