America has Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. But India has “Padman.” Based on the short story “The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land,” from “The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad” by Tina “Twinkle” Khanna, the Sony Pictures Entertainment film tells the true story of a man who had an explosive affect on his country. In the movie set in rural India, a determined inventor upsets his family and invites talk of scandal when he tries to develop and market a low-cost sanitary pad. You can read plenty of articles online celebrating the wonders of Trek tech. We want the Star Trek universe to become a reality so bad we’ve actually created a lot of the technology already. Things like communicators (cell phones), portable data tablets, universal translators (not very good ones), and holodecks (well, my Oculus Rift comes pretty darn close) are all great additions to our world. But what about the tech that isn’t so incredible? We see some pretty bad stuff happen to people in the Trek Universe. Let’s look at the tech we probably don’t want to see become reality.

Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton in "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C".
By Lee Pfeiffer
Jim Nabors, who epitomized the image of a friendly country boy, has died at age 87 at his home in Hawaii. Nabors was plucked from obscurity when Andy Griffith caught his nightclub act in L.A. in the early 1960s and cast him in the role of Gomer Pyle, the affable but simple-minded filling station attendant in "The Andy Griffith Show". The program was always among the top shows in the ratings and Nabors' exposure on the show gained him instant fame. The character of Gomer became as iconic as Griffith's Sheriff Andy Taylor and Don Knotts' deputy Barney Fife. Nabors' popularity extended into a second career as a pop singer. When he first sang on an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", many viewers thought his operatic baritone voice was dubbed. However, they soon...

Maria Bamford, the star of perhaps Netflix’s most truly original comedy, went fully nude in the first episode of “Lady Dynamite,” just for funsies. “There are so many male nude scenes that I think are funny. I just — I’m older, I don’t give a shit,” she said, with a laugh, to IndieWire.
The scene features Bamford dodging attempts to pixelize her naughtiest bits, in an effort to (as one of her pet pugs explains in voice-over) celebrate “body positivity.” That’s an absurd sentence to write, out of context. But it fits perfectly with the mindset that drives “Lady Dynamite,” which features Bamford as a somewhat fictionalized version of herself, dealing with the pitfalls and pratfalls of the entertainment industry in a heightened reality where dogs can talk, the boundaries of space and time don’t matter, and, really, why shouldn’t a 40-something woman strut around naked?...

Admittedly I don’t know much about anime but I do know something at least about food, besides how to eat and what I like. The culinary creations derived from several Hayao Miyazaki films are incredibly easy to make and look very tasty. In fact a few of them might be worth trying out a time or two. Cake from Kiki’s Delivery Service There is probably a very well-defined recipe for this but for all intents and purposes it looks like a chocolate cake with a very smart-looking design atop it. In referential narratives, there’s a point where a nod to popular culture becomes so obvious the writers feel the need to specifically acknowledge it. “Community” consistently did this well, crafting individual episodes around known films or TV shows, like “A Fistful of Paintballs” or “Documentary Filmmaking: Redux,” and naming their episodes after the homages (if not directly announcing them in the narrative). But those were one-off spoofs of form as much as function, featuring stylistic touches that served as a tip of the hat to the filmmakers. They were quickly forgotten as the long-term story moved on to another target the next episode.
“The Orville” is perhaps a more accurate comparison for “Future Man,” given both shows are taking a premise made famous decades prior and repurposing it for their own benefit. Seth MacFarlane’s Fox series has failed spectacularly in bluntly copying “Star Trek,” missing both the motivation,...

Sneak Peek new images of "Wonder Woman" actress Gal Gadot in the December 2017 issue of "Elle" (Us) magazine, wearing Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and a whole lot more, photographed by Paola Kudacki:
"In real life, I'm the type of girl who doesn't take herself too seriously," said Gadot.
"I think women are amazing for being able to show what they feel. I admire women who do. I think it's a mistake when women cover their emotions to look tough. I say let's own who we are and use it as a strength.
"I feel that I've got the opportunity to set a great role model for girls to look up to a strong, active, compassionate, loving, positive woman, and I think it's so important.

Qarib Qarib Singlle
Starring Irrfan, Parvathi
Directed by Tanuja Chandra
Look, there are lots of problems in Qarib Qarib Singlle. As there are in life. But that’s what makes life , and life in the movies, worth living.
Qarib Qarib Singlle(Qqs) is a delightful ‘romp’-com about two middleaged strangers, one a widow – the other a vagabond, travelling together to meet his ex-girlfriends. Don’t giggle. Nothing new here. But then if you want something new, please visit your nearest mall and buy yourself a fresh coat of paint for your living room. Movies make sense only when they bring us characters we know in ways that we never knew that we knew them.
And I can swear I have met Yogi and Jaya somewhere. The fact that they are played by Irrfan and Parvathi (who is a prized find for Bollywood) is just so providential for director Tanuja Chandra.

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland may have dropped a surprise in the laps of her show's writers. Hyland immediately admitted, however, that she hadn't looped the show's writers into her decision to make the character bisexual. Did she just force the issue? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The premiere of Stranger Things' second season introduced us to a handful of new characters including Billy, a student at Hawkins High School who can only be described as a total assh*le - the guy steals people's girlfriends and rocks a mullet. In real life, though, the actor who plays Billy seems like a sweetheart. His name is Dacre Montgomery, he's 22, and he hails from Perth, Australia. This means that he has an incredibly sexy accent that will have you weak in the knees. Check out this recent interview with Australia's Studio 10 to hear what we mean.

The moms that Jennifer Garner plays onscreen -- in movies like Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Miracles From Heaven -- usually feel cut from the same cloth. They’re doting, loving mothers with a smile on their face and a twinkle in their eye -- the type of mom you imagine Garner is in real life, too. In The Tribes of Palos Verdes, however, she plays Sandy Mason, a mother of two teenagers whose life spirals out of control after her husband leaves her for another woman. And in this poster for the film, debuting on Et, Sandy hovers over her carefree daughter (played by It Follows actress Maika Monroe).

Horror movies aren’t the only films that can cause you to have nightmares. Here’s a look at some of the most frightening moments from movies that aren’t horror films.
Terror and fear are common traits in all movies, not just horror films. Frightening moments happen in everything from children’s films to blockbuster action flicks. The reason is that fear is an effective tool for filmmakers. First, it is easy to create. Dark picture quality, demonic makeup or special effects, even a simple jump scare can do the trick. As compared to genuine emotional connection to characters or a film’s themes, creating scares doesn’t tax the script too heavily. Furthermore, fear is a very effective way to connect with the audience. If they are scared, there is a vulnerability that the filmmakers can take advantage of to create a more emotional viewing experience.

Bullying prevention social activist Monica Lewinsky announces the launch of the “In Real Life” PSA campaign – including new additions to the #BeStrong suite of emojis.
Video: In Real Life #BeStrong
October is Bullying Prevention Month and the film and emojis are designed to bring attention to the epidemic of cyberbullying and offer solutions. While the PSA draws attention to the difference between how people behave online versus in real life, the #BeStrong emojis allow people to take action when witnessing online bullying.
“In Real Life” is a powerful exploration of bullying that recasts the issue and asks the question: “If this behavior is unacceptable in real life, why is it so normal online?” Bbdo New York, the award-winning agency, created the pro bono campaign, working from an insight shared with the agency by Ms. Lewinsky. Bbdo collaborated with Lewinsky and the award-winning public relations firm Dini von Mueffling Communications to address this idea.

When Monica Lewinsky first started thinking about making a PSA for Bullying Prevention Month, there was one thing she wanted to stress above all else: “I wanted to creatively demonstrate the difference between our online and offline behavior in a thought-provoking way.”
The result, the powerful new PSA In Real Life, which she worked on with ad agency Bbdo New York, and Dini von Mueffling Communications, premieres Monday. The video, she says, highlights, “How people hiding behind a screen will write something they’d never say to someone’s face — and what that says about the inhumanity of their actions.

For the purpose of this list however I’ve decided to focus on those that are anywhere from quirky to outright funny. Old age in films is something that can swing one way or another depending on the nature of the film. One thing that is certain is that they are almost always the pillars of wisdom that you hope to see in any film. In real life elderly couples are not always the nicest folk but the chances of meeting a pair that are not that

*before going into the review, let’s get the obvious out of the way: we at Age of the Nerd would like to take a moment to say we are fully aware of Victor Salva’s criminal history and the moral dilemma that is presented when discussing or financially supporting his movies.
The horror landscape has changed rather drastically in the sixteen years since controversy magnet Victor Salva first introduced slasher-starved audiences to “the Creeper” (Jonathan Breck) and his taste for body parts in the ‘Jeepers Creepers‘ franchise. Since then, there’s been the rise of the torture porn sub-genre and filmmakers like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, the supernatural found footage genre, an obnoxious onslaught of inferior remakes (fingers shall be pointed specifically at The Wicker Man, When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas) and a needed return to form thanks to filmmakers like James Wan, David Sandberg and Jennifer Kent.

Stevenson stars in this drama adapted from the memoir of a German woman who tracked down her chillingly unrepentant mother – a former guard in Auschwitz
Juliet Stevenson gives a typically excellent performance of bottled up shame and guilt as a woman haunted by the sins of her mother in this low-budget British drama. It’s loosely inspired by the true story of Helga Schneider, whose mother Traudi abandoned her family in 1941 to work as a guard in Auschwitz.
In real life, Helga settled in Italy; in the film she travels from London to Vienna with her granddaughter for a deathbed confrontation with unrepentant Traudi (chillingly played by Karin Bertling). The film is a little rough around the edges and occasionally lacks subtlety, but there is a powerful scene in which Traudi begs her great-granddaughter to try on her old SS uniform, which she has kept like a treasured wedding dress...

The second season of Insecure gave us a few new catchphrases (like "wine down"), a fire soundtrack, an emotional finale, and some of the finest eye candy to grace our screen all year (bare butts, anyone?). One particularly handsome introduction to the show was Sarunas J. One of the most interesting things about the American movie culture is that we have a weird attraction towards villains. From Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs to Darth Vader in Star Wars, the movie would not be the same without them. In real life, Americans are often split on media villains such as Edward Snowden. But when it comes to being cast as a villain an actor may never see a leading role. As Boris of Boris and Natacha said, “But TV villains never get top billing.” That may not be true in the case of Margot Robbie’s

Image Source: Netflix By now, most Orange Is the New Black fans know just how different the cast looks outside of their Litchfield jumpsuits, but few of the makeunders are as jaw-dropping as the one Francesca Curran agreed to while playing "Skinhead" Helen. With her shaved head and striking face and neck tattoos, Helen has always been one of the most recognizable characters on the show, despite not being one of the leads. In the show's fifth season, however, the actress gets way more screentime than she has in past seasons, so it made us wonder: what does she look like outside of her Oitnb costume? Spoiler alert: She's Freakin' Gorgeous. Luckily Francesca's Instagram account is a veritable treasure trove of shocking before-and-after shots chronicling her transformation into the white supremacist character. Although she fully committed and shaved off all of her hair, she's not afraid to rock some pretty...

Every time someone decides to do pop culture as they would look like in “real life” I think I hear a baby crying somewhere down the block. Honestly, some of them look fairly silly and harmless but others look like something out of a nightmare cut straight from a psychopathic vision of awful. That didn’t make sense to you did? Imagine then how a lot of people, myself included, feel about these. The artistry in them is great, don’t get that confused, but the overall feel of the picture is, well, let’s just say I wouldn’t want to meet even

We’re almost at the end of Claws‘ first season… and we still don’t exactly know who Polly is, do we?
With that sweet smile and preppy sweater tied around her neck, Polly — as played by Emmy winner Carrie Preston (The Good Wife, True Blood) — seems like a picture-perfect Southern belle. But appearances can be deceiving: She’s also a liar and an ex-con who’s stuck wearing an ankle monitor after serving time for identity theft. (And as Virginia learned this season, if you cross one of Polly’s friends, she will not hesitate to cut a bitch.

Game of Thrones has produced some of the worst (as in, evil) characters that have ever appeared on TV. But as dark as the show can sometimes get, it also gives fans hilarious characters, witty one-liners, and powerful sex scenes. One character in particular that has walked the line between good and bad quite frequently is Sandor Clegane, or The Hound. The incredibly large man, played by actor Rory McCann, was the personal bodyguard to King Joffrey before befriending Arya and forming a slightly heartwarming protective relationship with her. RelatedThink You Could Spot Game of Thrones' Lord Varys Out in Public? After five rollercoaster seasons, Arrow returns for its sixth this October. For many long-time fans, the Prometheus storyline saved the series and brought Green Arrow, played by actor Stephen Amell, back to his gritty, street-level, vigilante roots. Part of what made this recent storyline so compelling was that Green Arrow finally solidified himself as a leader and a true hero -- he definitely earned his redemption... but (possibly) at a very high cost. The cliffhanger ending in the Season 5 finale suggested that some of the cast won't be coming back, which is a shame since many of the minor players were finally starting to gel. On the upside, the recent Comic-Con preview trailer promises a doubling-down of Arrow's back-to-basics approach.
One major subplot in last season's storyline was the abduction of Oliver Queen's son William (Jack Moore). William was generally relegated to a plot device by Prometheus, who forced...
