Sports comedies aren’t always the easiest thing to pull off, but when done right, the results can be pretty enjoyable. Case in point: Jay Karas’ Break Point, a new film revolving around tennis and in particular, “two estranged brothers who reunite to make an improbable run at a grand slam tournament.”
Despite being a bit too predictable and not really breaking the mould, the flick is breezy, harmless and full of heart, offering up an amusing watch with some strong performances from the cast and a handful of genuinely hilarious moments.
Our very own Alexander Lowe reviewed it back at SXSW and had the following to say:

Despite a rather week performance here in the United States, Terminator Genisys' chances of getting a sequel actually looks surprisingly high right now. In the past few weeks, the blockbuster has been absolutely raking in the dough over in China, and that money may wind up being enough motivation to get Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions to green light a follow-up. That being said, according to star J.K. Simmons, that green light hasn't actually been officially lit just yet. Currently out promoting his new tennis movie Break Point, the Whiplash Oscar winner was recently asked by Screen Rant about the chances of seeing a Terminator Genisys sequel - but the actor didn't have much of an update to give about the development of the franchise. Sports as metaphor and conduit for personal change is not a new thing in cinema, but it's not too often we see tennis courts used for this thematic backdrop, nor for the setting of a comedy. But "Break Point" just does that. And after spending some time on the festival circuit last year, including a debut at SXSW, the movie is now headed to theaters and a new trailer has arrived. TV comedy veteran Jay Karas directs Jeremy Sisto, David Walton, Joshua Rush, J.K. Simmons, Amy Smart, Vincent Ventresca and Adam Devine in this film about a fading tennis champ who teams up with estranged brother for one last run at glory. Here's the official synopsis: Jimmy Price is a reckless man-child on the last leg of his career as a doubles tennis player. You’ve likely seen a lot of David Walton lately, considering he’s the star of the new NBC series About A Boy, but the actor also has a new film which screened at South By Southwest this year called Break Point. In that film he plays Darren, a thirty-something substitute teacher who reunites with his brother Jimmy (Jeremy Sisto) for one last attempt at qualifying for the Open.
I found the movie absolutely hilarious, and think it has a pretty good story too. Both the lead performances are great, as is that of Joshua Rush, who plays one of Darren’s students. It’s easily one of my favorite sports movies from the last few years, and for more reasons why, you should definitely check out my full review.

Sports films are notorious for being cliche. It’s all too common for a story set in the world of sports to hit the same predictable plot points and do the bare minimum between, which is why many aren’t fans of the genre. On paper, Jay Karas’ Break Point, the story of an over-the-hill tennis player teaming up with his brother to make one last run at the Open, may sounds like more of the same, but in execution it’s head and shoulders above its peers.
Break Point focuses on two brothers, Jimmy (Jeremy Sisto) and Darren (David Walton), who were once one of the best junior doubles teams in the nation. Around that time Jimmy ditched Darren to play with someone better, and since then their relationship has been strained. The film picks up when Jimmy, now a 35-year-old man child, has been ditched by his younger partner.

What does it take to be a good partner? Openness, communication, an active interest in what's important to the person you're with. It's good advice for your love life, but as Jeremy Sisto finds out in "Break Point," those tips work well on the tennis court too. Director Jay Karas, who has logged time behind the camera on "Workaholics," "Parks & Recreation," "Raising Hope" and "After Lately," makes his feature debut here rounding up a pretty solid ensemble including David Walton, Joshua Rush, J.K. Simmons, Amy Smart, Adam DeVine, Chris Parnell, Vincent Ventresca, Cy Amundson and Jenny Wade. Co-written by and starring Sisto, the story follows a former tennis pro that has burned his bridges, who makes one last swing at the big time, and rounds up his estranged brother to once again join him on the court. Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

The Austin fest will screen the food-truck indie drama alongside the Veronica Mars movie and documentaries from Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Swedish House Mafia
The South By Southwest festival has announced the first items for its film arm this year, including the world premiere of Jon Favreau's indie drama Chef.
After years of starring in glossy comedies such as Couples Retreat and directing two Iron Man movies as well as Cowboys and Aliens, Favreau is returning to the more low-key style that made his name, via hits like Swingers and Made.
He directed, wrote and starred in the latest film, playing a chef who quits his kitchen job to set up a food truck. It may be indie, but has a blue-chip cast including Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara and John Leguizamo.
Also premiering at SXSW will be the Veronica Mars movie, which raised an...

With Sundance 2014 about to kick off the year’s major film festivals in just a few days’ time, all eyes are turning tonight to one of the next big stop-offs on the circuit, with SXSW announcing seven premieres, including Jon Favreau’s anticipated indie comedy, Chef.
Favreau’s Chef will be making its presence felt as the Opening Night Film, kicking the festival off on 7th March out in Austin.
The similarly anticipated Veronica Mars movie, which notably raised funds to make the project happen via Kickstarter last year, will have its world premiere.
And fans of the genius and mind-opening astrologist/cosmologist Neil deGrasse Tyson will be very pleased to know that he’ll be there in person for a special event, as the host of Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, Fox’s follow-up to Carl Sagan’s 1980 classic, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

Exclusive: The Voice coach Adam Levine continues his producing efforts with a single-camera comedy in development at NBC. The project, from Universal TV and Levine’s 222 Prods, is based on the real-life relationship between the Maroon 5 frontman and late-bloomer writer-producer Gene Hong (Community), who have been best friends and roommates since before they found success. Hong will write the pilot and executive produce with Levine, along with Levine’s childhood friend and longtime manager/producing partner Jordan Feldstein of 222 Prods. The project, whose development team includes Josh Gummersall, stems from the first-look deal Levine inked with NBC Entertainment in May. Feldstein is the brother of Jonah Hill, on whose Fox animated series, Allen Gregory, Hong worked before joining Community. Levine and Hong previously teamed for another comedy project inspired by their relationship. In 2011, they developed a karaoke bar comedy for NBC, also written by Hong, which drew from the...
