- In 1974 in a Britain beset by industrial unrest young Charles Thoroughgood, a trainee spy or MI6 is ordered by his boss Hookey to recruit his old university friend,Viktor Koslov, a Russian embassy official, taking advantage of the fact that the married Viktor is seeing Mayfair call-girl Eva Pyke. Charles engineers a meeting with Viktor but is shocked to learn that his own father, a recently-deceased army officer spied for the Russians and that Viktor is similarly trying to recruit him. Charles uses the invitation to discover precisely what his father told the KGB but feels disloyal when he exposes Viktor's affair to the Russians and, although he helps thwart a Russian attack on power stations - helped by colleague Anna March - and allows Viktor to escape he nonetheless feels disillusioned with the world of espionage.—don @ minifie-1
