There are certain things that crop up once a season in Father Brown, and a couple are covered in this episode. Firstly, a visit from any returning character is always fun and this one reliably ups the drama as usual! Secondly we get the very brief annual re-emergence of a certain issue - crucially again without repentance - unlike every other topic covered in the series. One character replies 'God loves those who love him', but continually doing your on thing and going against God/anybody's will without remorse is surely not the action of love. Elsewhere, more familiar characters also hurt their loved ones, causing tension in a main story arch, but, as is more fitting with the Christian faith and therefore the show, repentance and forgiveness ultimately eases the pain for several people and brings calm for the viewer after all the events of the episode. Every emotion is covered - even slight humour bookending the story with the creative scone flavours!
