The festival’s 44th edition runs online (due to the pandemic) Jan 29-Feb 8.
The Goteborg Film Festival has unveiled its slimmed-down lineup of 70 films from 39 countries (compared to the usual size of about 400 films); the festival’s 44th edition runs online (due to the pandemic) Jan 29-Feb 8.
Goteborg will open with the Swedish premiere of Zaida Bergroth’s Tove, a biopic of Finnish artist and Moomins creator Tove Jansson; and will close with the European premiere of Frida Kempff’s Knocking, an unnerving psychological drama about a woman hearing strange noises in her new house. Knocking premieres at Sundance and is sold by Bankside.

Emraan Hashmi recalls how working in Oscar winner Danis Tanovics film Tigers changed him as an actor and took his image beyond being a commercial hero in Bollywood.
"Tigers gave me the opportunity to experiment with my acting capabilities and discover an unbeaten path to prove my mettle. It was an immersive experience to be a part of a project where the cast and crew are from two different worlds, and putting up a great film for a rightful cause," he said.
Working with Tanovic, whose 2001 Bosnian film No Man's Land won the Best Foreign Film Oscar, "helped me polish my craft and gain new perspectives", said Emraan.
He is happy that over the years Tigers has garnered good response in the international festival circuit. "All in all, the film saw a great response from the International Film Festivals," he said.

In April, as everyone was just getting used to conducting affairs through Zoom calls, director Rob Savage had an idea: Set up an elaborate video-conference prank in which he explores the source of creepy footsteps coming from his attic, ending in a horrifying jump scare for his friends. The two-minute video, now viewed over 220,000 times on Twitter, immediately sparked the interest of executives at horror streaming service Shudder.
“We said, ‘Let’s talk right away.’ What sold us was ‘Zoom seance,'” Shudder general manger Craig Engler recalled of the timely concept. “It was 12 weeks from the time we were pitched the movie to the time it ended up on Shudder.”
The 57-minute film based on Savage’s video, “Host,” released in July, exemplifies why AMC Networks’ Shudder has been able to find success in such a crowded streaming landscape. The service, which launched in 2015, crossed 1 million subscribers in September thanks to its nimbleness,...

The Pingyao International Film Festival, founded by Chinese helmer Jia Zhangke and former Venice head Marco Muller, has released its full lineup of global and local films. The selections in the two main sections focus on first or second features.
The festival is set to take place from Oct. 10-19 in the ancient city of Pingyao in central Shanxi province, not far from Jia’s own hometown. Few foreigners will be present, as China continues to maintain travel and quarantine restrictions for those entering the country, despite lifting some measures.
A dozen films are set to compete in the international “Crouching Tigers” section. They include a number of titles that first bowed at Venice: “Residue,” from American director Merawi Gerima, which debuted to a special mention earlier this month in the independent Venice Days section before being picked up by Ava DuVernay’s film company and released on Netflix; “The Book of Vision,...

Like the warring Japanese dojos depicted throughout the Karate Kid franchise, a growing disconnect exists between those who wish to learn a fighting style as a means of physical and emotional growth and those who simply seek the ability to punish their adversaries without mercy. It’s respect and honor versus strength and superiority—something even the most devout and sacred of Chinese Kung Fu masters like Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) can’t always instill in their pupils. No matter how much they strive to trust the younger generation’s capacity to protect what they’ve learned as a tool, the allure of morphing it into a weapon for profit is often too much to ignore. It’s why he retired after his three disciples left. The disappointment was too much to bear.

Seale is the worst.
On The Outsider Season 1 Episode 9, the heroes enacted a plan to locate El Cuco and take it down. Given the severity of the situation at hand, you would think Seale would have kept quiet about the plan to his brother.
Just when it seemed like things were going in the right direction, he had to screw the whole operation by opening his mouth.
His incessant need to save his brother was a natural instinct, especially given that they've both lived a life in which they've never trusted the law.
It was understandably a shock to the system to have all of these law officials fighting their corner, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the story Seale fed everyone about the kids in the cave was riddled with falsehoods.
He could have said anything, and everyone would have believed it. By the time the story about the boys became meaningful,...

The Swedish-Italian-Danish co-production is a coming-of-age drama set in the world of professional football. Ronnie Sandahl has wrapped shooting for his new project, a coming-of-age film entitled Tigers. This is the Swedish writer-director’s sophomore feature, which follows his successful debut, Underdog (2014), a drama starring actress Bianca Kronlöf in the lead role. The flick is also the second instalment in a trilogy set in the world of sports and comes after his writing work on Janus Metz’s Borg/McEnroe (2017). The script, penned by the director himself, is based on Martin Bengtsson’s 2007 autobiographical novel In the Shadow of San Siro. The story revolves around Bengtsson’s experience as a 17-year-old football wonderkid, freshly recruited by Inter Milan, whose dream turned into a nightmare when he started suffering from depression and tried to commit suicide. Speaking about the plot to Nordisk Film & TV Fond, veteran producer Piodor Gustafsson explained: “The film.

Disney’s “Frozen 2” stayed ahead of the competition in its second weekend in China, holding on to the top box office spot with a three-day gross of $26.7 million. According to consultancy Artisan Gateway, the “Frozen” sequel has now earned a cumulative $90.9 million in the world’s second-largest film market after releasing day-and-date with the U.S. and scoring Disney’s biggest-ever opening weekend in China for an animated title.
The Jennifer Lee-directed film already made more in its $53.2 million debut weekend than the original “Frozen” made in its entire $48 million Chinese theatrical run in 2014. Nevertheless, China has been no match for sales in the U.S., where the title has already earned $288 million.
The star-studded murder mystery “Knives Out” failed to slash its way to equivalent success in its China opening weekend, grossing $13.7 million to come in third behind fellow newcomer “Two Tigers,” a local dark comedy that earned $19.7 million.

Acclaimed Indian actor Adil Hussain will headline director Bauddhayan Mukherji’s “Marichjhapi,” one of the new projects introduced this week at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Project Market.
Written by Abhinandan Banerjee and Mukherji, the film will follow the real events of January 1979, where refugees on Marichjhapi island, located in the Sundarbans delta located between India and Bangladesh, wake up to find police boats surrounding their island.
Over the next three months, the refugees are tear-gassed, their huts and fisheries destroyed, women raped, houses burnt, and they are fired upon in the middle of the night. And through all of this, relationships flourish and love blossoms.
Monalisa Mukherji will produce via her and Bauddhayan Mukherji’s outfit Little Lamb Films. “Marichjhapi” is budgeted at $800,000, too big to be self-financed. “For this one I will need co-producers,” Monalisa Mukherji told Variety. “People and countries not just supporting financially, but...

2018 has been a great year for movies, especially for horror films, from mainstream cinema hits to some fantastic direct to market titles. But it’s also been great for the genre as a whole not just the movies… With that in mind here is Faye’s rundown of her Top 10 Horror Films of 2018:
Ghost Stories
Without a doubt my film of the year, an absolute joy from beginning to end. Sliding skilfully from stage to screen, Nyman and Dyson bring jumps, scares and genuine heart to this spectacular tale. The score is also one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to.
Assassination Nation
I adored this fresh, modern take on the Salem Witch story. Effortlessly mixing current political commentary with the standards of old, Assassination Nation hits where it needs to, and hits hard.
The Witch in The Window

For their next offering “Cheat India” they joined hands with popular star actor “Imran Hashmi” who is first-time producing the film. Imran was recently seen in “Tigers” which found digital release on the ZEE5 streaming platform. It is this very superhero Ayaan, who has now made his acting debut with a short film Kids For Tigers that has been produced by Dia Mirza. Speaking about Ayaan's acting debut, the proud father Emraan Hashmi said that just like Ayaan, he too had made his acting debut at the tender age of six years (in an ad for a mosquito repellent). He added that Ayaan had so much ease in his body language and he mouthed his lines without any signs of discomfort or inhibition. Emraan Hashmi also added that, Ayaan liked acting and telling stories, which, apparently, were all signs...

These special selections were curated by Georg Bütler, the senior programmer of the festival. Despite not ever having been to India, Georg was able to find and astutely select 12 of the best films from the subcontinent.
