George Clooney and Amal Clooney, in their roles as co-founders of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, spoke about their work “waging justice” at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, England on Friday.
“It’s nice to be in a room with people that get shit done,” the Hollywood star said early on during the appearance.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice, whose mission is to provide free legal support and advocacy to victims of genocide, unlawful imprisonment, and other human rights abuses, started 2024 with a new executive leadership team.
The foundation’s work is about “holding people’s feet to the fire,” the actor said, highlighting that “it’s a lot of failing and then finally succeeding.” He emphasized that the couple and their team have “the patience” for that.
“Finding ways, levers” to have an impact can often be indirect, George Clooney pointed out. “You can’t guilt really shitty...

This is not a groundbreaking or an especially hot take, but it is, sadly, an evergreen one that has only become more glaringly obvious in the age of fake news, partisan media, and Twitter (currently known as X). While the work of real journalists remains an undisputed and important pillar of our democracy, it can never have too many advocates in its corner to ring that bell. Unfortunately, scripted television isn’t often one of them.
Now, we’ll preface this by saying film has long been a champion of the hard work and sweeping change that can come from true, boots-on-the-ground journalism, with sterling examples like All the President’s Men, Spotlight, The Post, and Good Night, and Good Luck. But TV has far fewer worthy examples to its credit.

Don’t call it a career win because few would argue that Robert Downey, Jr. didn’t deliver one of his best performances ever as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” That immense talent was rewarded with his first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 96th Academy Awards. One of the most popular actors of the past two decades and a three-time Oscar nominee overall, Downey, Jr. earned his first nomination 30 years ago for “Chaplin.”

There’s a saying over here in the UK about London buses. You wait so long for one and then two turn up at once. That notion could play out at this year’s Academy Awards as this 2024 ceremony could be the second in a row where all four acting winners are rookie nominees.
This happened last year when Michelle Yeoh edged out Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while her co-stars also emerged victorious. Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor went to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.
The last time this played out was in 2006 when Phillip Seymour-Hoffman won Best Actor for “Capote,” Reese Witherspoon took home Best Actress for “Walk the Line,” Rachel Weisz triumphed in Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener,” and George Clooney emerged victorious...

Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr has revealed that he was keen to play the villain in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins… but Nolan was less enthused.
Here’s one of those sliding doors moments that could have changed the cinematic landscape: Robert Downey Jr has revealed that he was keen to play Scarecrow in 2005’s Batman Begins. The actor went as far as securing a meeting with Christopher Nolan, the film’s director, to discuss the role – but as he recalls, he could tell that Nolan just wasn’t that into the idea.
Downey Jr was chatting at a career retrospective interview at Los Angeles’ American Cinematheque Theatre, and revealed that he wanted the role once he became aware of it. According to Variety, he said, “I’m pretty sure I heard about [this role] and I was like, ‘I’m Scarecrow. And then I remember meeting [Nolan] for tea and I was like,...

George Clooney officially has eight directorial features under his belt, with the ninth, The Boys in the Boat, rowing towards a December 25th release. And it was with that movie that Clooney faced perhaps his most unique challenge yet: directing remotely.
It was during filming on The Boys in the Boat — which began in March 2022 (the project has been in development for quite some time) — that George Clooney caught Covid for the first time. But production couldn’t just stop and so he had to direct from an iPad. Speaking with People, Clooney remembered one scene with Callum Turner, who plays Olympian rower Joe Rantz. “I’m on an iPad hacking away from my bedroom…[co-producer Grant [Heslov] was sitting on the camera and they’d hold up the iPad to Cal and I’d go, ‘Ah, go fast.’ I’d rasp out ‘Faster’ whatever that was.” While this didn’t result in the best direction,...

Music videos are a glorious playground for filmmakers and when Toronto based artist Debby Friday was writing her debut album, she wanted to create not just a music video but a narrative short which embodied both her music and her hybrid artistic talents the impressive result of which being titular film Good Luck. After a chance meeting with co-director Nathan De Paz Habib the duo’s creative outlooks paired seamlessly and Nathan’s desire to experiment and play with the music video form matched with the surreal and experimental world Debby had envisioned. Good Luck is a genre blending cacophonous dark melding of two fertile creative minds which immerses us into a world of torrid adolescence and tumultuous love playing out within a coming-of-age narrative wrapped within a fantastical surreal milieu. A multi-layered film which has lingered in our minds, Dn sat down with the co-directors to discuss how they...

An inspirational true story turned into a bestselling novel is about to make its way to the big screen. That tends to be the natural playbook for these sorts of dramas, but this one in particular comes loaded with an extra amount of star power.
Based on author Daniel James Brown's book of the same name, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the well-documented events surrounding the 1936 Summer Olympics and the feats accomplished by the US men's rowing team from the University of Washington. As with other incredibly underdog stories, the stories of the individuals involved -- all of whom were working class athletes struggling to come out the other side of the Great Depression, almost rivals the magnitude of their achievements.
A few significant differences with "The Boys in the Boat," however, comes from its A-list director George Clooney and the historical backdrop of Nazi Germany hosting the...

Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.
“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.
SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.
Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

Though it doesn’t exactly have the same warm, melancholic charm, Alice Troughton’s elegant literary thriller The Lesson could give star Richard E. Grant the kind of late-career bump that last year’s Living afforded Bill Nighy. An Oscar nom might be a little fanciful at this stage, but a BAFTA shot is a no-brainer, with Grant on top form as a mercurial, narcissistic British author. Co-star Julie Delpy might also find new offers coming in, showing a stiletto-sharp new side to herself as his enigmatic wife.
Though it doesn’t have the intensity of this year’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, Troughton’s upper-middle-class gothic is working in similar territory — with the exception of art curator Hélène, three of the four main characters are writers at various stages of their career. The minimalistic opening credits set an intriguing tone — if Sally Potter made a Knives Out movie,...

"Trolls" might not be the biggest animated movie franchise out there, but it has played an oddly crucial role in movie history. The first movie, which introduced singing troll protagonists Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake), was released in 2016 to generally warm reviews and a modest $346.9 million at the worldwide box office. When the coronavirus pandemic hit U.S. shores in 2020, shortly before the scheduled release of "Trolls World Tour," Universal Pictures made the bold decision to release the movie simultaneously in theaters and on Premium VOD.
Three weeks later, "Trolls World Tour" had reportedly racked up $100 million in digital rentals. Theater owners were definitely not happy, but studios across Hollywood saw a ray of hope breaking through the doom-laden clouds of lockdown. With "Trolls World Tour" having survived and thrived in the relatively untested waters of PVOD, the same approach was used for movies like "Bill & Ted Face the Music...

As this year’s Academy Awards are doled out, can a statuette on the mantelpiece actually hinder your Hollywood career?
The year is 2006. Competing for Best Picture, the top prize of the 78th Academy Awards, are five films. Ang Lee’s wrenchingly sad queer cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is a critical favourite.
Capote, a meaty biopic by Bennett Miller, stars the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role. George Clooney’s gripping Good Night, and Good Luck celebrates CBS news reporter Edward R Murrow and an era of journalistic idealism and daring. Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a propulsive historical thriller about the aftermath of the Black Friday terror attack during the Munich Olympics.

Gender-neutral awards were supposed to make things fairer, a bit like the new off-field video assistant referee in football. And, just like Var, some argue that they’ve levelled the playing field. Others think they’re destroying the game. A few may simply wish to celebrate their wins without turning round to check if a man with a computer says it’s Ok. Whatever your view, the topic is everywhere in this year’s testy awards season; last weekend’s Brit and WhatsOnStage Awards both implemented categories without gender distinctions, with results that were lambasted and lauded respectively. But for an idea that’s about looking beyond the binary, the conversation so far has focused very much on winners and nominees whose gender identity corresponds with the sex registered for them at birth (otherwise known as cisgender). Surely that shows the real issue: the creative industries are trying to run...

Sony Pictures Classics has made many wise investments at the Sundance Film Festival over the years. Its 2022 acquisition, “Living,” just nabbed Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Bill Nighy, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other recent Sundance titles propelled to the Oscars by the studio include “The Father” (2020), “Call Me By Your Name” (2017), “Whiplash” (2014) and “An Education” (2009). Amy Adams’ very first career bid came for “Junebug,” which the distributor picked up from Park City in 2005. That film’s writer, Angus MacLachlan, is the director of “A Little Prayer,” one of Sony Pictures Classics’ 2023 festival purchases (the other being Audience Award winner “The Persian Version”).

As an actor, you can count on George Clooney to deliver the goods -- whether that means flashing that legendary, mischievous smile of his, or buttoning down the charm to play a more conflicted and possibly amoral character. As a director, however, you can never be too sure which Clooney you're going to get. There's the one who gave us the fascinating "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and the riveting "Good Night, and Good Luck." Then there's the one behind the political thriller "The Ides of March" and the apocalyptic survival drama "The Midnight Sky," both of which have their merits but are hurt by weak stories. Finally, we have the Clooney who helmed stuff like "The Monuments Men" and "Suburbicon," which are baffling misfires given the wealth of talent involved in making them.

After pandemic cancellations and date changes over the past couple of years, the 13th edition will return to is usual November berth on Saturday, November 19, a key kickoff to Oscar season.
This year’s previously announced honorary awards will be presented to directors Euzhan Palcy and Peter Weir, songwriter Diane Warren, while Michael J. Fox will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The ceremony takes place for the first time at the newly reopened Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City. That was also the plan last year before Covid concerns forced the Governors Awards to scale down to a much more intimate event that took place at the Hollywood & Highland ballroom two nights before the Oscars in March of this year. Looks like things are back to normal — hopefully.

As a director, George Clooney’s filmography has veered through different genres (most recently from the frigid edges of earth into outer space in the big-scale epic The Midnight Sky). But I don’t think he has ever hit us directly in the heart quite the way his latest, The Tender Bar, does.
The only special effect used in this exceptional and universally recognizable story is simply family. It is what they call in the trade a “feel good” movie, and boy, do we need it now. It should be no surprise that it all comes from real life, specifically a coming-of-age 2005 memoir written by, and about, Pulitizer Prize-winning author J.R. Moehringer and his life shaped by his time growing up in Manhasset, Long Island, specifically the local bar, Dickens, run by his Uncle Charlie. The Academy Awards is no stranger to controversy and 2006 was no different. To the shock of many, Crash beat out Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, and Munich to win the Oscar for best picture. Going in, Brokeback Mountain was considered to be the favorite walking out with the prestigious title, with many stunned that Crash even received the best picture nomination. This isn’t the first time that the Academy voters made a big blunder for the best picture category, with Dances with Wolves and Shakespeare in Love

When it was revealed that The Mandalorian was five times more popular than anything else on Disney Plus, nobody was surprised in the slightest. After all, the Mouse House’s streaming service has always been lacking when it comes to engaging original content, but people sign up and tune in regardless based on the strength of the company’s back catalogue.

George Clooney has a relatively simple answer when asked by Den of Geek what inspired him to make his first science fiction film as a director, The Midnight Sky.
“I thought I had a take on it, you know?” says Clooney, who also stars in his seventh outing behind the camera. “I felt like there was a story that I understood in a way about what we’re capable of doing to one another if we don’t pay attention, if we don’t listen to science, if we don’t pay attention to divisions and hatred and pay that forward. I thought I had an understanding of that.”
We’re speaking with Clooney via Zoom, of course, in the ninth month of the never-ending Covid-19 pandemic, and after briefly commiserating about the last time we saw our parents, we turn to the film, which is based on a novel...

Since the release of Gravity in 2013, George Clooney has been in quite the acting slump, with Brad Bird’s severely underrated Tomorrowland as the lone bright spot. Scan his IMDb page and he appears to have made more Nespresso-funded short films than studio features, albeit for altruistic causes. The directorial projects have been even direr, a far cry from the glory days of Good Night and Good Luck and The Ides of March.
Considering its pandering weightiness and saccharine heart, Clooney’s The Midnight Sky feels like a blatant attempt to get back in the good graces of unadventurous critics and Oscar voters. Adapted from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by co-screenwriter Lily Brooks-Dalton, it envisions our planet’s last gasp through the glassy, sad eyes of world-renowned scientist Augustine Lofthouse (Clooney). Afflicted with a mortal ailment, he has decided to stay on Earth while what’s left of...

Director Steven Soderbergh and producers Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
The announcement did not specify whether the show would be in-person or virtual, a decision that will not be made until the course of the Covid-19 pandemic is clearer.
While Collins is a television producer with a long history of producing live awards shows like the Grammys, BET Awards and Soul Train Awards and Sher is a veteran producer with Oscar nominations for “Django Unchained” and “Erin Brockovich,” the presence of Soderbergh on the producing team is a surprise and something of a coup for Academy president David Rubin.
Soderbergh, who won the Best Director Oscar for “Traffic” in 2000, is an adventurous and iconoclastic film and television director whose work includes “sex, lies and videotape,” “Contagion,” “Out of Sight,” the “Oceans” movies, “Magic Mike” and the recent...

The Academy has chosen three first-time Oscar producers for the delayed 2021 show: Emmy-nominated Grammy Show producer Jesse Collins will team with filmmakers Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh, who worked together on Oscar-winner “Erin Brockovich,” to produce the 93rd Oscars which, due to the pandemic will air live on ABC and around the world on Sunday, April 25, two months later than usual.
There has been some debate about what form the Oscar show will take, whether in-person or in hybrid form like the Emmys. Clearly, the Academy will do what it takes to keep participants safe. Directing Oscar winner Soderbergh (“Traffic”) has earned recent praise, not only for his filmmaking, but for leading the taskforce at the Directors Guild of America that has set Covid safety guidelines for the industry.

After a lackluster November that left Netflix scrambling to rescue its award season ambitions after “Hillbilly Elegy” didn’t quite hit the mark, the streaming giant is showing its full strength with a December lineup that pairs unmissable Originals like “Mank” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” with quintessential library titles like “E.T.” and “Jurassic Park.” Add a bearded George Clooney and a rapping Meryl Streep into the mix, and you’ve got the kind of holiday viewing slate that only Netflix has the chutzpah to put out into the world.

George Clooney has a unique distinction when it comes to Oscar history. The multi-faceted filmmaker and star has been nominated for Academy Awards in an impressive six different categories, a rare feat that includes for Best Picture (Argo), Actor, Supporting Actor (Syriana), Director, Adapted Screenplay (The Ides of March) and Original Screenplay. He has won twice, as a producer on Argo (2012) and Supporting Actor in Syriana (2005). He could well find himself in contention in many of these categories again for his latest film, The Midnight Sky, which Netflix will launch on December 23 — his first movie project made for the streaming giant.

During a virtual screen talk today at the 64th BFI London Film Festival, George Clooney discussed the importance of journalistic integrity, the Covid-19 pandemic, his upcoming Netflix film, The Midnight Sky, and the highlights of his illustrious career.
Throughout the hour-long conversation with Scottish broadcaster Edith Bowman, which centered on a selection of his iconic films—including Out of Sight, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Good Night, and Good Luck—a prevailing theme was the importance of kindness, and of speaking truth to power, in today’s world.
