I'm a huge fan of The Chosen, and have become accustomed to tearing up during most episodes. But this season..... oh the cringe! This feels like amateur Bible production with a really nice camera.
The dialog especially is clumsy. Why are they now quoting the NIV translation of the Bible almost word for word? It's unbearable to watch these actors try to convincingly deliver lines that don't match the tone or style of the rest of their dialog.
On that note, the "period" quality is hit or miss. Hard to put a finger on what exactly the problem is, but some things feel too...modern, which pulls me out of the story. Is it the performances, the physicality of the actors, the dialog, the culture not being quite right, the accents? Maybe all to some extent. But the period correctness of this show can't hold a candle to shows like The Crown or Franklin, where you feel like you have been sent back in time and are actually observing history.
Also, do you have to drive home every story point with a sledgehammer? Give your audience some credit - we're actually pretty well educated in storytelling. Stop hitting us over the head with your camera and script saying "pay attention, this is important!" When the setups are this contrived, everyone can see the payoff coming from outer space and it loses its emotional impact.
