In writer-director Jérémy Clapin’s downbeat science-fiction film Meanwhile on Earth, the promises of the future are already the naïve and tarnished daydreams of the past, while the present is a matter of inexorable decline. Lit in wintry tones of disillusionment, nearly every shot in Clapin’s follow-up to I Lost My Body evokes a kind of post-Futurist mood. At the same time, there are flashes of nostalgia for what we thought the present could be—if only we had believed in those daydreams hard enough for them to become reality.
The film tells the story of Elsa (Megan Northam), a young woman whose brother, Franck (voiced by Sébastien Pouderoux), has disappeared into the vacuum of outer space on an exploration mission. Her talent as an illustrator motivates Meanwhile on Earth’s several animated daydreams, in which she meets with Franck on a spacecraft that suggests something out of a Mœbius comic.

If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

Exclusive: Paris-based genre specialist Reel Suspects has taken world sales rights on Argentinian filmmaker Pedro Cristiani’s directorial feature debut horror Deus Irae.
The movie revolves around a priest who skirts the divide between the human world and realm of darkness through his membership of an order of excommunicated clergymen who carry out exorcism on possessed people, using both prayer and more violent means.
The cast features Pablo Ragoni, Gastón Ricaud, Sabrina Macchi, Jorge Prado, Agustín Rittano and Agustín Rittano.
The horror is an extension of Cristiani’s 2010 short of the same name which played multiple festivals.
The new feature world premiered in Argentina’s Mar Del Plata Film Festival last November, with XYZ boarding North America representation shortly after in time for the AFM.
Cristiani first made his mark in the film industry in 1997 as the co-writer on disappearing subway train drama Moebius, spearheaded by cinema professor and filmmaker Gustavo Mosquera R,...

XYZ Films has acquired North American sales rights to the horror-thriller “Deus Irae,” the debut feature of Argentine filmmaker Pedro Cristiani, and will introduce the film to buyers at the upcoming AFM. Variety has been given exclusive access to the film’s bone-chilling trailer (see below).
Premiering at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival in November, “Deus Irae” follows Father Javier, a priest living a fractured existence. On one side, he assists families who claim to have witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns.
But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse, he must question how much of his own humanity — or sanity — he’s willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil.
Produced by Molino Studio and Hudsonman,...

It seems that Mongolian movies have been taking steps forward towards genre paths, with the recently released “Disorder” being a testament to this fact. Baatar Batsukh, an experienced cinematographer in his directorial debut, makes his effort in genre filmmaking with “Aberrance”, a claustrophobic horror that premiered in Oldenburg before screening at SXSW. It is now being released in the US, as the first Mongolian horror movie to do so.
Aberrance will be released in North American cinemas starting October, 6, courtesy of Freestyle Digital Media
Erkhmee and his wife Selenge arrive at an old cabin deep in the Mongolian wilds, for reasons that are initially unknown. When Selenge spots a dead cat in the garbage bins nearby, it becomes evident that something is wrong with her. When the seemingly polite, but essentially nosy to the point of stalking neighbor starts watching the couple from every angle possible, it is revealed that...

A potential trend is emerging: Actors being forced to shut up in movies.
The new trailer for John Woo’s dialogue-free thriller Silent Night (below) teases a protagonist played by Joel Kinnaman who’s unable to speak. (“Nothing speaks louder than revenge,” reads the movie’s tagline.) The trailer follows Hulu’s similarly dialogue-free hit alien invasion thriller No One Will Save You.
Both are coming, ironically enough, during the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has actors dutifully not speaking to the press about their studio projects.
It’s not clear if dialogue-free movies can correctly be called a trend yet (the old media rule of thumb is it takes at least three examples to use the T-word). But it’s interesting that roughly 100 years after the silent movie era that at least a couple of filmmakers are exploring feature-length storytelling without leaning on dialogue at around the same time.

Despite a strong idiosyncratic start, Colin West’s metaphysical plot tends to veer towards the formulaic
This cosmic midlife-crisis drama written and directed by Colin West has a pleasingly homecrafted feel, amiably impatient dialogue and metaphysical prickles, especially with a climactic twist that’s akin to the one-sided Moebius strip paradox mentioned by one of the characters. It flips our expectations while connecting back to what we’ve seen before, running sci-fi back into science and chance into predestination.
American comic Jim Gaffigan stars as floundering TV presenter Cameron Edwin, the host of wacky children’s science show Above and Beyond. A former Crafoord prize winner with ambitions to be an astronaut, he is now staring at life limitations: divorce from wife Erin (Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn), also an academic big-hitter, as well as a humiliating ousting from his own programme, due to be sold off and fronted instead by the slick,...

South Korean film organizations are heaping criticism on the Venice Film Festival in response to a decision to screen the final film of the late Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk despite the multiple sexual abuse allegations he was facing prior to his death.
Kim died from Covid-19-related complications in Latvia in 2020. He had lived his last years mostly abroad after a wave of sexual assault allegations against him during the height of Korea’s #MeToo movement tarnished his reputation at home. At the time of his death, the director was at work on what would be his final feature, an Estonia, Kyrgyzstan and Latvian project titled Call of God. The film was completed posthumously by Kim’s Estonia-based collaborator, filmmaker and producer Artur Veeber. The work will receive its world premiere in a coveted out-of-competition slot in Venice on Sept. 6.

I have to admit, although I am a big fan of Kim Ki-duk’s films, his latest efforts have not satisfied me at all. After the trouble he had with “Moebius,” he has toned down, to the point that his films have lost the shocking element that made them so special. “The Net,” however, seems like an effort to return to his roots, although not fully realized.

The director has mastered the art of making the same film – about Earth’s imminent collapse – over and over, yet box office figures suggest cinemagoers can’t get enough
You might think, given the events of the last year and a half, that the dystopian disaster genre really ought to be dead in a ditch – don’t we all, as Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker has suggested, need something a bit more cheery to get us through the long, cold winter? If so, Roland Emmerich clearly didn’t get the memo. For the German film-maker is back with yet another story of the Earth’s imminent collapse, Moonfall, centred on mysterious catastrophic events that appear to be linked to our sleeping satellite.
A strange sense of deja vu accompanies the movie’s new trailer, released earlier this week. Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before,...

DC’s Stargirl star Luke Wilson‘s wish came true when he and his brother, Owen Wilson, who plays Mobius on Marvel’s Loki series, lived together while working in Atlanta on their respective superhero shows.
Luke told TVLine a year ago that when the Covid pandemic first hit, “My brother, Owen, was two months into a Marvel show and they had to hit pause on that, so I’m hoping that we’ll both go back to work in Atlanta at the same time. It’d be fun to live together, with him on a Marvel thing and me on a DC thing.

This article contains Loki spoilers.
Though Marvel fans were excited to find out if Loki’s Mobius M. Mobius would ride a jet ski off into the sunset during the season finale earlier this month, it did not come to pass. But news of a Season 2 in the works during the end credits left the possibility open of Owen Wilson’s character finally living out his dream, and it seems that there were originally plans to include more of a backstory for Mobius in Season 1 that could now be explored in the next batch of episodes.
Loki director Kate Herron confirmed that there were once details on the page that went deeper with Mobius, but teased that not bringing his backstory to the screen during the first season meant that Season 2’s writers could choose to go in new directions with Mobius in the future.

This article contains spoilers for the Loki finale.
So, we now officially know that Marvel’s Loki will be back for Season 2, but this week it finished up its first season on Disney+ by blowing up the MCU as we know it and re-establishing the Marvel multiverse, which once existed but was actually at war with itself. Apparently, Miss Minutes was at least telling the truth in that part of her Tva orientation video.
In the Loki finale, “For All Time. Always.”, we met the villainous He Who Remains aka Kang aka Pick Any Card (Jonathan Majors), who first discovered that the multiverse existed as a scientist on Earth and decided that he had the answer to all of the multiverse’s territorial woes in the future: construct a Sacred Timeline policed by the Time Variance Authority to make sure the multiverse wouldn’t happen and our universe could continue...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Loki” Episode 4, “The Nexus Event.”]
Through four hours of “Loki,” the most remarkable aspect of Marvel’s third so-called television series is how quickly it can pivot. The Time Keepers are dead! No, they’re just androids. Loki is finally going to say something from the heart! Oh wait, he’s dead — except he’s not, so long as you watch the credits. These little twists and turns are standard storytelling in the MCU and beyond; what’s frustrating is that so many of them mean so little, especially when it comes to characters.
Take Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius. After sitting out last week’s episode, everyone’s favorite Tva analyst returned in a big way, only to say goodbye in similar fashion. He kicked things off by saving Loki (Tom Hiddelston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) from a falling planet, using their tender kindling of what’s later called a “sick,...

This article contains Loki episode 4 spoilers.
Loki episode 4 is, well…we’re just gonna say it…the best episode of the series so far, by far. It rivals even the best chapters of WandaVision in its ambition, scope, and general batshittery. And a good chunk of that comes in the final moments, as well as what comes after.
That’s right, folks. Loki episode 4 engages in that proudest of MCU traditions: a post-credits scene.
Let’s try and make sense of all this, shall we?
Is Mobius Dead?
In what is perhaps the first truly heartbreaking moment on this show, Owen Wilson’s fan favorite Mobius M. Mobius gets himself deleted after confronting Judge Renslayer about the true nature of the Tva, its agents, and the Time-Keepers. Unlike the other Minutemen, notably C-20 and B-15, Mobius hasn’t had a Sylvie-assisted memory reactivation, but he’s savvy enough to realize...

This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s Loki episode 3.
Loki Episode 3
The third episode of Marvel’s Loki, “Lamentis”, threw our main man and the Variant he’s been chasing into a deadly situation from which there ultimately appeared to be no escape. It also made Loki canonically bisexual in the MCU and opened up a can of Tva worms that will keep us wondering about the true nature and identity of the Time-Keepers for a while longer.
There was a lot going on in the show’s most Doctor Who episode yet, which abandoned its crime procedural vibe to focus on splashing Marvel’s cash further than previous installments. It mostly succeeded in doing so, considering its focus was entirely on two characters plotting a Snowpiercer-esque escape from a doomed moon. Luckily, Tom Hiddleston and Sophia di Martino have terrific chemistry and it’s a joy to watch them...

The new Disney+ show Loki is - obviously - about the god of mischief and his latest adventures. As it turns out, it's also about the Time Variance Authority, a shadowy organization that we haven't heard about before. So what do they do, and are they good guys or bad guys?
The short answer is simply that the Time Variance Authority oversees time itself, particularly timelines. "We protect the proper flow of time," Mobius M. Mobius tells Loki in the latest trailer. He also explains that Loki "broke reality" when he picked up the Tesseract in New York and teleported away, thus creating at least one new timeline branch. It's up to the Tva to try to set things right, and that's why they've recruited Loki, the guy who did the breaking, to help do the fixing.

The master of the artistic onerousness reached his apogee in this film that was initially banned from screening in South Korea due to its “high levels of sex and nudity” and “scenes of incest,” as the Korean Media Rating Board (Kmrd) stated. Furthermore, the initial statement mentioned, “The story and contents of the movie are highly violent, terrifying and harmful to underage audiences. The unethical and unsocial expressions of sexual activity between immediate family members make it only suitable for screening in limited theaters.” Kim had to trim twenty scenes initially, and after the Kmrb repeated its ruling, he cut further 12, finally lifting the ban from his film.

Leading South Korean film sales firm Finecut has boarded “Toxic,” a fact-based drama-thriller about a mysterious outbreak that killed thousands. The firm, which is also representing Hong Sang-soo’s Berlin competition title “Introduction,” will unveil the new title to buyers at next month’s European Film Market.
The film is the dramatization of events between 1994 and 2011 in which at least 1,600, and possibly as many as 14,000, people in Korea died. Consumer goods companies including the U.K.’s Reckitt-Benckiser sold tens of millions of humidifier-disinfectants for everyday use. Some included medicinal claims such as the suggestion that they would be good for people suffering from the common cold. Instead, with possible government complicity, the products skipped proper testing and were later found to contain chemicals that caused irreversible lung damage.

Has Marvel already solved one of its major Fantastic Four reboot movie problems with the upcoming Disney+ Loki series? The evidence is compelling for sure, as a first trailer for the McU spinoff is haunted by a cloaked figure in various ominous shots, and some are speculating that this will turn out to be none other than Reed Richards’ archenemy, Doctor Doom.
The introduction of Latverian supervillain Victor von Doom does actually make a lot of sense at this point. Despite being a beloved and often despicable character in Marvel Comics, Doom hasn’t quite hit right in previous Fantastic Four films, having been played by Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon in both the 2005 Ff movie film and its sequel, and later by Toby Kebbell in Josh Trank’s unfortunate reboot. With yet another reboot on the way under the watchful eye of Marvel maestro Kevin Feige and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts,...

Award-winning South Korean director Kim Ki-duk has died in Latvia after contracting the coronavirus, according to the Associated Press. He was 59.
The death of the filmmaker, who won the top prize at 2012 Venice Film Festival with his movie “Pieta,” was first confirmed by Vitaly Mansky, president of an international doc film festival in Riga, and later “indirectly” by the Foreign Ministry in Seoul, which revealed a “South Korean male in his 50s died while being treated for Covid-19 at a hospital in Latvia during the early hours of Dec. 11 local time,” according to the AP.
Kim traveled to Latvia on Nov. 20 to buy a house near Riga and apply for a residence permit.
Among Kim’s other notable honors were a prize for his movie “Arirang” at the 2011 Cannes film festival and best-director awards for his work shown at other film festivals in Berlin and Venice.

The Herculean counter-attack mounted by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would not have been possible had it not been for Tony Stark’s time travel discovery in Avengers: Endgame.
About mid-way through Marvel’s three-hour juggernaut, everyone’s favorite genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist hacked time travel, for want of a better word, leading to a mind-bending Time Heist through McU past.
It proved to be a genius plot point from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – not to mention directors Joe and Anthony Russo – as it allowed Endgame to indulge in a little nostalgia while simultaneously bringing the curtain down on Marvel’s Infinity Saga.
But how, exactly, did Tony Stark crack the time travel conundrum? We know he got a “mild inspiration” during the night, but could it be that Peter Parker helped inspire his discovery?

Veteran marketing executive Rebecca Daugherty is departing her role as Evp of Marketing for ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios.
Daugherty, whose tenure at ABC spans 33 years and includes campaigns for such signature series as Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and The Conners, was named to the top marketing post in 2017, succeeding ABC’s former longtime head of marketing Marla Provencio, who had exited after 35 years with the company.
A lot has changed since Daugherty was named Evp of Marketing for ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios in 2017, reporting to then-abc Entertainment President Channing Dungey and ABC Studios President Patrick Moran. Disney’s acquisition of key Fox assets made ABC Studios part of a larger studio entity, Disney Television Studios, and ABC and ABC Studios both have new leaderships.

Korean prosecutors have decided not to allow a defamation case against the actress who last year accused film maker Kim Ki-duk of sexual assault, and another against broadcaster Mbc’s investigative news show “Pd’s Notebook.”
The actress, who maintains her anonymity, claimed sexual assault by Kim, and that he slapped her on the first day of filming “Moebius” in 2013. She and two other actresses appeared on “Pd’s Notebook,” adding accusations of rape and predatory sexual behavior against Kim and actor Cho Jae-hyun.
A court ordered Kim to pay a $4,450 (Krw 5 million) fine for the assault but dismissed the sexual assault charge for lack of evidence. Kim subsequently sued the actress and “Pd’s Notebook” for false accusation, and libel by mass communication.

We count down the 25 must-see episodes from Stargate's 10 year run.
This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
Twenty-five choices from a pot containing over 200 entries. That sounded simple enough. It was only upon plunging through the event horizon of the episode guide and embarking on an intergalactic journey that spanned ten years that Stargate Sg-1’s true complexities began to present themselves.
Despite being notionally episodic, the show loved to tinker with any number of long-term plot arcs across its 10-season run, devoting a few episodes each year to the return of familiar faces and weaving those stories together in unexpected ways. Rather than attempting to encapsulate the full scope of a decade-long narrative that wove together military thrills, contemplative sci-fi and good old alien monsters, I’ve attempted to showcase episodes that either evolved the show in some notable, persistent way, those that...

Publisher Raw Fury took to Gamescom 2018 on Tuesday to show off the ethereal upcoming title “Sable,” which has been dated for late 2019.
The indie exploration game will feature a wide variety of ways to interact with the environment, including hover bikes, ancient ruins dotting the landscape, and a soothing soundtrack from the artist Japanese Breakfast to tie it all together.
“Sable,” which originally made its debut during E3 2018’s PC Gaming Show, is a tastefully muted and gorgeously animated adventure game inspired by artists like Moebius (“The Incal”). Players take on the role of a young wanderer, the titular Sable, who’s tasked with exploring a large desert planet.
Labeled as a “coming of age” tale, the game will find Sable encountering several others throughout her journey, though it does seem as though the game will feature other surreal exploration elements as well. It has a wistful, lonely feel that...
