NASCAR has hired John Dahl as its new SVP Content, bolstering the sanctioning body’s efforts to further connect with current and new fans across the globe over a range of content platforms.
Dahl joins NASCAR after a career at ESPN, where he ascended from a coordinating producer to become VP and EP for Special Projects, Films and Original Content.
Starting his new role on May 1, Dahl will drive the creative vision and oversee the teams responsible for all content generated by NASCAR Studios and NASCAR Digital Media across multiple business areas. Those include production, programming, and operations.
His scope will cover the full spectrum of long and short-form storytelling around all aspects of motorsport, ranging from features, documentaries, and branded content to social media, NASCAR.com, and in-app executions for NASCAR’s primary and ancillary platforms.

NASCAR is joining the race to beef up its presence in Hollywood as behind-the-scenes sports documentaries continue to gain traction.
The auto-racing league has signed on with CAA for representation, and the alliance will bolster NASCAR Studios, a production arm established in 2022 to work with teams, sponsors, tracks and drives to develop an array of media projects. NASCAR Studios produced the docuseries “NASCAR: Full Speed,” which debuted on Netflix in January, with Words + Pictures. The project is one of an increasing number of in-depth looks at sports activity granted by the leagues that promote it that have become popular on streaming services including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, among others. Similar projects have looked at golf and other forms of auto racing.

Netflix has picked up an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos and the events surrounding the Major League Baseball team’s departure in 2004. The doc, which the streamer has confirmed exclusively to Variety, reps Netflix’s next original project out of Canada.
The doc is the first greenlit under Netflix’s new creative partnership with Montreal-based Attraction. Netflix signed a first-look deal with Attraction last November, for French-language film projects to be developed and produced by the company.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the untitled baseball doc. Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head producer, documentary, and Richard Speer, president of Attraction, will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the film explores the setbacks that led to the departure of the Expos from Montreal and how the loss of an MLB team in Montreal continues to spark debate 20 years later.

With 84.9 million total views in just 35 days, “Fool Me Once” slots in between “Bridgerton” Season 2 (No. 8 with 93.8 million views) and “The Witcher” (No. 10 with 83 million views).
