The 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival is underway after the world premiere of Audrey Diwan’s racy flick Emmanuelle kicked off the festivities in Spain.
The film, which boasts stars such as Noémie Merlant (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Naomi Watts (Mullholland Drive, Birdman), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), is inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan’s erotic novel. Chacha Huang and Anthony Wong round out the cast, all of whom, barring Watts, appeared briefly onstage before the showing at the city’s Kursaal Theater.
The director’s project centers around a woman, Emmanuelle (Merlant), on a business trip to Hong Kong working with a luxury hotel group. Searching for a lost pleasure, she seeks her arousal in experiences with some of the hotel’s guests. One of them, Kei (Sharpe), seems to constantly elude her. Diwan has said the script was conceived as an...

If you love bold and shocking cinema, there was no place in the world you would have rather been Thursday night than the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin’s South Lamar neighborhood. The 2024 edition of Fantastic Fest kicked off with a bang, debuting Damien Leone’s bloody Christmas slasher “Terrifier 3” and the John Lithgow-Geoffrey Rush two-hander “The Rule of Jenny Pen” before fans headed to the festival’s legendary opening night party headlined by the McDonalds-themed metal cover band Mac Sabbath.
It was all par for the course at Fantastic Fest, America’s largest genre film festival, which has long been hailed as a celebration of cinematic weirdness. But while fans of gore, creatures, and kung-fu will have no shortage of genre treats to feast on, the lineup also features Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,” the Sundance Audience Award-winning documentary “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” Dreamworks Animation...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Picture and the lack of an outright frontrunner.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! *Mr. Burns voice* Release the hounds! We’ve officially rang the bell on Oscar season — even though we’ve been ringing the bell since our ridiculously early Oscar picks in March — and this is already shaping up to be one of the most formless Phase 1s we’ve had in quite a while. In keeping with the theme of the 2024 presidential election, the buzzword I’ve heard from so many people about the race so far is “weird.” Last year at this time, many had already seen the 10 movies that would wind up getting nominated for Best Picture, with “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” leading the charge...

Rome will present a lifetime achievement award to Johnny Depp, who will present Modi, his biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, at the festival.
Viggo Mortensen will also receive a lifetime achievement award, and will present The Dead Don’t Hurt, which he wrote, directed and stars in.

Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” (Mubi) opens in 1,949 U.S./Canada theaters this week. That’s not unusual for a genre film, but it also won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and its distributor is the theatrical division of niche streamer Mubi.
In the year 2024, wide is the new platform. “Conclave” (Focus), “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate), or “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff) will also go wide between now and the end of October. Pre-covid, they would most likely debut in a few New York and Los Angeles theaters.
“The Substance” isn’t a hard sell for a wider release. There’s strong advance interest among cinephiles for the original and gory body-horror story starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. However, it’s a first for Mubi.
Launched as a streaming site, Mubi expanded into the U.S. theatrical market in 2016 with very limited releases for films like “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki.

In the 12 weeks since Gold Derby’s 2025 Oscars predictions center launched, over 3,800 users have made their nominee picks in nine major categories. The season’s most significant period of change so far coincided with the conduction of the annual Venice, Telluride, and Toronto film festivals, the awards portions of which have given the general public a clearer idea of which movies will ultimately appeal to academy voters.
One of the past week’s most interesting developments was the surprising coronation of “The Life of Chuck” as the Toronto festival’s newest People’s Choice Award winner. Many believed runners-up “Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” had better shots at the coveted prize, but neither ended up in the position to directly follow “American Fiction” as the 13th such honoree in a row to earn Best Picture and Screenplay Oscar nominations. Since being added to our predictions center last Sunday, “The Life of Chuck...

The State of the Race
If there is one major Oscar race that has changed the most due to the Academy’s push to become more globally-minded, it is the Best Director race. Recent surprise nominees, from “Anatomy of a Fall” filmmaker Justine Triet last year to “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund and “Drive My Car” director Ryusuke Hamaguchi the years prior, have often been directors that appealed more to the tastes of international voters.
Fast forward to now, and that sort of Cannes crowd really is leading the conversation...

Is “The Life of Chuck” coming for the Oscars? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the state of the race post-fall festivals.
Mike Flanagan‘s “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill, was a somewhat surprising winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, taking the top prize over Cannes favorites “Emilia Pérez,” the first runner-up, and “Anora,” the second runner-up. How much of “The Life of Chuck” being a world premiere at TIFF — unlike “Emilia Pérez” and “Anora” — factor into its win? Nevertheless, it’s been 13 years since the last TIFF champ missed a Best Picture nomination. Will “The Life of Chuck” end that streak? Neither of us is quick to slot in “The Life of Chuck” at the moment despite the Best Picture field being in flux.

The Zurich Film Festival (Zff) has unveiled its full line-up for its 20th anniversary edition, which takes place from 3-13 October.
Zff’s main competition line-up comprises 14 films, with eight of them directed by women. Two of them are world premieres: Lucia Chiarla’s Es Geht Um Luis from Germany and Lisa Bruhlmann’s When We Were Sisters from Switzerland.
“This year the female gaze dominates our competition. Numerous films tell their stories through the eyes of women, for example Linda or Mother Mara,” Christian Jungen said.

If the race for Best International Feature Film feels rushed this year, it is: the Academy pushed up country submission deadlines by a month. Films still have until November 15 to play in theaters in their respective countries. The Academy has also laid down more rigorous rules for who serves on the Oscar selection committees: 50 percent must be filmmakers (including artists and craftspeople). France, for example, beefed up its committee from seven members to 11.
As a country with a robust film industry, France has often been criticized for picking the “wrong” Oscar submission, from Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Titane” (Neon), which was not nominated, to “The Taste of Things” (IFC Films) over Neon’s eventual Best Picture contender, “Anatomy of a Fall.”
In fact, Audrey Diwan, director of “Happening” — a film many thought should have been submitted instead of “Titane” — is now on the French selection committee, along with veteran...

The State of the Race
With the first round of fall film festivals coming to an end, the reality is settling in that 2024 just has not been the best year in film so far. Although Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck” was the eventual winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, an honor that has been one of the best indicators of what films will receive a Best Picture nomination, the two runner-ups were Cannes winners “Anora” and “Emilia Pérez,” now making them as solid...

There’s no Oscar front-runner for Best Picture this year as clear and as strong as “Oppenheimer” was at around this time in 2023, so we’re bound to see fluctuation in our odds for Best Picture as the season progresses. That’s especially true now after a glut of film festivals around the world from Venice to Toronto to Telluride have unveiled many of the fall’s top contenders. But the new front-runner for Best Picture and Best Director in our odds is a film that had its world premiere back in May: Cannes Film Festival champ “Anora.”
The film, about the whirlwind romance between the title character (current Best Actress favorite Mikey Madison) and the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn), made its grand entrance onto the awards stage at the Cannes Film Festival. There it became the first American film since “The Tree of Life” (2011) to win the Palme d’Or.

The fall festivals — starting with Venice and through Telluride and Toronto — give us a map of what the rest of the year in movies looks like. These are the films that will dominate year-end discussions, top 10 lists, and, of course, the Oscars and the awards that precede and predict them. These are the movies that maybe you adore or anticipate now, but might get sick of hearing about by March 2, the date of the Oscars. So turns the awards season wheel, but at least the Oscars are closer to February again.
And the tone-setting trifecta of Venice, Telluride, and TIFF isn’t even the half of it, as regional festivals continue to pop up through December and, of course, New York and AFI Fest are still to come. Sean Baker‘s “Anora” is currently the Oscar front-runner for Best Picture, but there’s another major contender bubbling under the surface: “Emilia Perez.” In fact, four of the last five Expert journalists who have updated their predictions — Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Nikki Novak (Fandango) and Perri Nemiroff (Collider) — are predicting the Netflix musical to prevail. The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.
Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? We’ve got you covered, as we run through some of our favorite reviews, stories, and interviews from this year’s TIFF.

The Woodstock ’99 music festival may have been an unmitigated disaster, but that town and that year brought us something far more lasting: The Woodstock Film Festival.
Fast-forward to 2024, and we’re celebrating the film fest’s 25th year. Among the slate’s highlights this fall is Paul Schrader’s latest film “Oh, Canada,” which will screen on Saturday, October 19. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Schrader, who will be further celebrated with the Honorary Maverick Award.
The 2024 festival will take place from October 15-20 at venues across the Hudson Valley towns of Woodstock, Rosendale, Kingston, and Saugerties. The centerpiece selection is Steve McQueen’s “Blitz,” with Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” closing the festival.

Previously known for roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Scream 5” and TV’s “Better Things,” 25-year-old Mikey Madison achieved a breakthrough earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival as the title character in “Anora,” which ended up winning the Palme d’Or. Now, as the fall film festival season has heated up, she has taken the lead in our overall odds for Best Actress at the Oscars according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival was a success on many fronts, launching many titles into the marketplace looking for buyers, and others into the fall season, including the usual spate of Oscar contenders. But the festival continues to contract, with empty seats in the largest houses.
Many sales titles weren’t scooped up quickly. According to buyers, many were demanding too much money, which should eventually shake out. David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.
Surprisingly, “The Life of Chuck,” without a distributor, won the People’s Choice Award that usually leads to a Best Picture Oscar nomination and occasionally an actual win. The likelihood that the film will instantly become an Oscar contender the way “American Fiction” did last year remains slim.

David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.

The Toronto International Film Festival — which I have been attending since 2007, and from which I just returned — has long been an important launching pad for Oscar contenders, from 1981’s Chariots of Fire to 1999’s American Beauty to 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire to 2018’s Green Book. But a few years ago, that status was jeopardized when the fest grew resentful of the fact that a number of films that it was advertising as “world premieres” or “North American premieres” were, in fact, first sneak-screening at the Telluride Film Festival, which takes place a few days before it does.
Even though virtually no TIFF attendee would have balked at seeing a film that had previously screened for a relatively small number of people in a remote town in the Rockies, TIFF decided to adopt a hard-line position: it told film makers and backers that if they showed their film somewhere else in North America before TIFF,...

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival concluded on September 15th. In an unexpected outcome, the Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck” won the People’s Choice Award. The award is the event’s most prestigious honor and selected by audience voting.
Directed by Mike Flanagan, “The Life of Chuck” tells the story of Charles Krantz in three chapters. Based on King’s novella, the film focuses on life, death, and finding meaning. Critic Chase Hutchinson praised the movie as a celebration of life’s meaningful moments.
Entering without a distributor, “The Life of Chuck” was not seen as a major contender. Its win provides a significant boost. Past People’s Choice Award winners have received Best Picture Oscar nominations 12 years in a row. Films like “Emilia Perez” and “Anora,” named runner-ups, had earned praise at Cannes but not the top TIFF prize.
In other categories, “The Substance” won for Midnight Madness.

Toronto International Film Festival gewinnen. Vielmehr ging er an die von der Kritik eher kontrovers besprochene Stephen-King-Adaption „The Life of Chuck“ von Mike Flanagan.

“The Life of Chuck,” a feel-good apocalyptic story starring Tom Hiddleston and directed by Mike Flanagan, took home the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award.
This prize has historically been a reliable predictors of eventual Oscar success. In past years, winners such as “Green Book” and “Nomadland” went on to capture the best picture prize at the Academy Awards. Last year’s honor went to Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” while 2022’s award was bestowed to Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” both of which were best picture nominees and major forces during awards season.

Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck picked up the top People’s Choice honor Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival as its 2024 edition wrapped with renewed celebrity heat but still in the shadow of Venice and Cannes.
The Stephen King novella adaptation stars Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Karen Gillan and Chiwetel Ejiofor in a genre-tripping film about embracing hope in the face of tragedy and had a world premiere in Toronto. Flanagan in a statement thanked TIFF for the top audience award prize: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed. We’re so grateful that The Life of Chuck connected with audiences in such a powerful way, but never expected this.”
The second runner up for the People’s Choice Award was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a queer crime musical headed to Netflix that earned the jury prize in Cannes for the director, while the titular lead Karla Sofía Gascón became...

“The Life of Chuck,” director Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston, has won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced at an awards ceremony on Sunday.
In TheWrap’s review of the film, Chase Hutchinson called it “less of a horror film than it is an existential grappling with the end — while also being a jubilant celebration of the moments that make life worth living along the way. It’s Flanagan’s vibrant equivalent of Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Synecdoche, New York’ that finds hope and meaning in his own way just as it is one of the best modern Stephen King adaptations one could hope for.”

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival has finally wrapped up, closing out a two-week frenzy of world premieres and screenings of highly anticipated offerings making their way across the international festival circuit. For many, TIFF (as well as the Venice and Telluride film festivals) marks the unofficial commencement of awards season, meaning the films that receive the People’s Choice Awards typically earn an early boost for their campaigns. Last year, the top prize went to Cord Jefferson’s publishing industry satire “American Fiction,” which would later earn the writer/director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a nomination for Best Picture. This year’s winner was Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston.
12 of the last 14 People’s Choice Award winners at TIFF went on to receive Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and four of them actually won the award.

Mike Flanagan‘s “The Life of Chuck” just bagged the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Since 2008, 15 of the 16 winners of the Toronto audience award have gone on to reap Best Picture bids at the Oscars. And five of those — “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The King’s Speech,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Green Book,” and “Nomadland” — won the top prize at the Academy Awards. (The exception to the rule: 2011’s “Where Do We Go Now?” from Lebanon.)
That stat certainly buoys the awards hopes of this film that is still without a distribution deal. Flanagan adapted the Stephen King novella about the life of a seemingly ordinary man, Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Jacob Tremblay plays a younger version of the character with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill in supporting roles.

The 2024 Beyond Fest lineup has officially been unveiled, and fans are ready for a spooky good festival.
The genre film festival will open with the highly-anticipated reimagining of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot.” The novel was originally brought to the screen in 1979 with a two-part miniseries and a 2004 film.
Now, director Gary Dauberman is giving the horror classic his own twist, with Lewis Pullman starring. The feature had a delayed debut as Warner Bros. pushed its slated September 2022 until Spring 2023 before pulling the film from a U.S. theatrical release all together. “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max October 3, and will have its world premiere on the big screen for Beyond Fest.
The festival will take place from September 25 to October 9.

"I am Ivan's wife!!" Universal UK has revealed another official international trailer for Anora, the beloved Palme d'Or winner from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the latest film from acclaimed American filmmaker Sean Baker. This just played at TIFF and everyone loved it there, too. Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who works nightly as a stripper in Manhattan, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and then impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch named Vanya (aka Ivan). Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled. So begins 24 hours of stressful NYC mayhem as hired goons pick her up and try to find Ivan. Mikey Madison stars as Ani as one of this year's big breakouts, along with Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan. My quote is again...

The 2025 Oscars will be televised live on ABC on Sunday, March 2 next year while the nominations will be announced a couple of months earlier — on January 17. There is a hell of a long way to go until then, of course, but, for us here at Gold Derby, it’s never too late to start thinking about the next Academy Awards. With that in mind, here is a list of contenders we think could be potential Best Picture competitors, as well as all the information you need to know about them.

With the 62nd New York Film Festival just a few weeks away, one of my favorite moments between the movies is connecting with the dedicated, passionate, cinema-loving audience that attends every year. There is no better place to do that than our returning Cinephile Game Nights, and this year, they will be bigger and better than ever.
Ahead of four new editions to be announced soon during the festival, join yours truly and The B-Side co-host Conor O’Donnell for a pair of special editions of Cinephile Game Night at New York’s premier cannabis destination, The Travel Agency: A Cannabis Store. Supported by brand partners Ayrloom, Hudson Cannabis, Rove, and Silly Nice, I’ll also be giving out tickets to some of the biggest NYFF62 screenings, including The Brutalist, Anora, Nickel Boys, along with many other prizes.

Mikey Madison is about to be a household name. The star leads Sean Baker’s “Anora” as sex worker and exotic dancer Ani. When a Russian nepo-baby of sorts comes to her club, events unfurl, they get married, and chaos ensues. Following the film’s world premiere at Cannes, buzz immediately emphasized her star-making turn and launched an early campaign for next year’s Best Actress race at the Oscars.
Baker, who has a knack for casting up-and-comers and showcasing them in a never-before-seen light, saw Madison in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and then 2022’s “Scream” and knew she was the one for the role. “Honestly, it was one of the easiest casting processes I’ve ever been through,” she told IndieWire at the film’s TIFF premiere. “I’ve never been offered a film like that.”
From learning Russian and pole-dance training, there were challenges ahead for Madison,...
