New York City's annual Tribeca Festival always brings something for everyone: from its series of short films made by all the most promising up-and-coming talent to several documentaries about a wide range of topics to the buzzy narrative features both international and close to home, all vying for Tribeca's various top prizes. Co-founded by none other than acting legend Robert De Niro in the aftermath of 2001's 9/11 attacks in an effort to revitalize the Tribeca neighborhood located in Lower Manhattan, the film festival has carefully curated its own identity over the years. While its famous big brothers like Cannes, Sundance, and the Toronto International Film Festival will always receive the bulk of attention, Tribeca tends to feel like the scrappy, blue-collar breeding ground for all the most under-the-radar offerings that the indie system has to offer.
This year's event was no exception, providing all sorts of opportunities for the curious and open-minded moviegoer.

While different in story arc, both films involved individuals facing a truth they inherently knew but never expected to encounter.

New York – The 23rd annual Tribeca Festival, presented by Okx, today announced the winners in its competition categories at an awards ceremony at Racket NYC. The top honors went to “Griffin in Summer” for the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, “Bikechess” for Best International Narrative Feature, and “Hacking Hate” for Best Documentary Feature.
“Griffin in Summer” (Dir: Nicolas Colia) involves 14-year-old Griffin Nafly, who during summer vacations gets down to the serious business of putting on his dramatic new play … an ambitious cross between “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and “American Beauty.” However, when his tween collaborators get distracted by more trivial pursuits like boys and camp, Griffin’s attention drifts toward Brad, the zoned-out handyman working at his house.

Nicholas Colia’s Griffin in Summer swept the narrative features award categories at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, nabbing honors for best U.S. film and screenplay, as well as a special jury mention for new narrative director.
Colia’s feature debut stars Everett Blunck as an aspiring 14-year-old playwright who falls hard for his mother’s handyman and struggling performance artist, played by Owen Teague. The jury mentioned in its notes Thursday that the film “straddled the very thin line between heartwarming, tragic, hilarious and awkward” and that it “fills a void in the marketplace for films that touch on sophisticated themes while remaining family friendly. Never pandering, always fresh, full of relatable universal experiences while being incredibly specific and nuanced.”

Given everything “Riverdale” threw at her and her castmates, Camila Mendes left her seven season, 137 episode run on the hit CW show having found her power.
“‘Riverdale’ was one of the most bizarre, fun landscapes to play with, and so the challenges were endless and I think there was never a dull day as an actor especially,” said the actress who played Veronica Lodge in the inventive Archie Comics adaptation. “There was a technical training that ‘Riverdale’ taught me that now I feel like I can do anything because we did it all on that show. There was no stone left unturned.”
Speaking to IndieWire over Zoom, Mendes clarifies that she had already shot the two Prime Video films she has been promoting this year, Outstanding TV Movie Emmy contenders “Upgraded” and “Música,” before the series came to an end, so she ended the series feeling “very happy that those...

One of the most lauded events of the Tribeca Festival, Chanel returned to host the 17th annual Tribeca Artists Dinner on Monday, June 10 at The Odeon in Manhattan, moving locations from Balthazar last year. The intimate evening honors the artists who have contributed original artwork to the festival’s award-winning filmmakers.
The carpet always feels like some sort of family reunion at this event, where much of Hollywood assembles in what feels like a — though glamorous — laid-back dinner to celebrate how far the film scene of NYC has come as it regenerated itself after 9/11. IndieWire favorites Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Katie Holmes, Blake Lively, Jude Law, Trevor Noah, Mark Ronson, Camila Mendes, Selma Blair, Colman Domingo, Chloe Fineman, Olivia Munn, Dianna Agron, Hannah Einbinder, Hari Nef, Lizzy Caplan, Lily Rabe, Natasha Lyonne, Victoria Pedretti, David Harbour, David O. Russell, and Francesca Scorsese were just a handful of the many attendees.

Griffin Nafly (Everett Blunck) is not like other 14-year-olds. Consider his contribution to his school’s end-of-the-year talent show: a snippet of his latest play in which he reads for both lead roles, a disaffected stockbroker and his drunk wife, as they scream and carry on about everything from infidelity to abortions. While everyone else is happy with pop song duets, it’s Griffin — too old for his years, too young to really break free — who wants to bring some actual art to the suburban stage.
And while that might all be Ok, even kinda fun, the real problem isn’t just that Griffin isn’t like most other 14-year-olds, it’s that he’s not even really like his closest friends either. While his childhood pals, including “Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret” breakout Abbie Ryder Fortson as his long-suffering second-in-command Kara, are moving into classic young adulthood — finding handsy boyfriends,...

The June skies are clear as the Tribeca Festival gathers indie filmmakers from around the globe with a large slate of features and shorts, music, games, TV, audio storytelling and a major addition this year in De Niro Con, a tribute to the prolific actor and Tribeca co-founder.
The fest moved from April to June in part for the weather but that can’t be taken for granted — last year’s edition opened to a city blanketed with acrid smoke from Canadian wildfires as Mayor Eric Adams handed De Niro the key to the city at a press conference and Tribeca unveiled De Niro Con. Fan events and screenings with star power from Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, David O. Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal doesn’t follow a North Star as she and her team sift through tens of thousands of submissions each year. But as they whittle down those applicants to the 100 or so films comprising the final lineup, themes tend to emerge.
“It’s not like we set out to say, ‘This is what we want to do.’ As an activist film festival, we always look for [political] films,” says Rosenthal, who created Tribeca Festival with Robert De Niro in the wake of 9/11. “This year, there’s a mental health narrative. I don’t know if that’s a post-covid thing.”
Tribeca, now in its 23rd year, will take place from June 5-16 and highlight films led by Kristen Stewart, Lily Gladstone and Jenna Ortega. “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” a look at the fashion icon and entrepreneur, will open the festival, with anticipated documentaries about Prince,...

Beloved indie filmmaker Joel Potrykus is back onscreen in a multi-hyphenate array of roles for his latest feature, “Vulcanizadora.”
Billed as a dark comedy, “Vulcanizadora” follows two friends, played by Potrykus and Joshua Burge, who embark on a disturbing mission in the Michigan woods to fulfill a disturbing pact. After they fail, one of them must return home to deal with the surreal legal and emotional repercussions after the plan ultimately unravels. Bill Vincent and Solo Potrykus co-star.
“Relaxer” filmmaker Joel Potrykus writes, directs, edits, and leads the feature, which is produced by Hannah Dweck, Matt Grady, Ashley Potrykus, and Theodore Schaefer, with Daniel Berger as an associate producer and Kevin Clancy co-producing. The film is shot in 16mm.
