Season 1: A Compelling (And Perfectly-Timed) Looked Behind the NFL QB Curtain
Right now, the NFL is leaps and bounds ahead of all other American professional sporting pastimes in terms of interest, drama, and money. Anything that bears the NFL's shield will likely be seen and make money--but that of course does not always guarantee a quality product. Fortunately, Netflix hit upon the right formula (and timing) with "Quarterback" to produce a compelling three-pronged football documentary.
For a very basic overview, "Quarterback" focuses on three NFL QBs during the 2023 season...
Patrick Mahomes, the young-and-cocky (but largely in a playful way) superstar who is clearly the position's future.
Kirk Cousins, the salt-of-the-earth Midwest Dad-joke personified who has put up every stat imaginable on a gridiron--besides consistently winning (especially in the playoffs).
Marcus Mariota, former Heisman Trophy winner now struggling to find his niche in the professional ranks.
Taken collectively, these three figures are a nice, wide QB swath and it is interesting to see how different individuals can ultimately be the leaders of an offense.
But where "Quarterback" really shines is in how it subverts the narratives that come with being spotlighted figures in America's most popular pastime. For example...
Mahomes often gets the rep of being arrogant and flashy surrounded by hangers-on--but here we see him raising young children with his wife while still managing to perform at an elite level.
Cousins can be written off as "Mr. Choke Job" for his playoff or prime-time failures--but seeing his desire to improve and affable nature may soften your take on him.
Mariota could easily be viewed as a flat-out NFL bust--but here we witness the extraordinarily fine line between NFL "success" and "failure".
"Quarterback" was also perfectly timed with its early-July release--a dead spot before training camps kick into high gear. After watching it, I'm ready for opening kickoff, fantasy drafts, and all the drama the NFL has to offer.
Though admittedly biased towards liking this doc from the jump due to Cousins quarterbacking my favorite NFL squad, I think it will strike a similar chord with general football fan viewers as well. It simultaneously subverts narratives while also providing an injection of football fever before the season's first late-summer breaths.
