- In honor of his deceased physician father, Deepak V. Chopra is able to graduate from medical school at the top of his class at the University of New Delhi, his primary motive in becoming a doctor to help others. But in wanting a better life, he decides to immigrate with his supportive mother, Nellie Chopra, to Toronto, they sponsored by his maternal uncle, Vijay Sharma, a restaurateur living his version of the immigrant dream with his Caucasian Canadian wife, Rani Sharma. Deepak finds that his dream of being a doctor in Canada is not as easy as he envisioned, as he is turned down from one physician job after another despite there being a shortage of physicians in the country in general. In the process, Deepak is initially reluctant to work in any other profession, despite not wanting to live off his family. His life changes in meeting two people. The first is Tony, a constantly on-the-prowl South Asian cabbie. Although Tony has never wanted to be anything but a cabbie, he introduces Deepak to his fellow immigrant cabbies, most who are highly educated but cannot find work in their chosen field. The second is Natalie Wilman, a Caucasian barista at a coffee house who was, out of circumstance, somewhat forced out of her own chosen profession as lawyer. For Deepak, it's love at first sight with Natalie. In the combination of Tony and Natalie with some extra help by Tony's boss, Pete Donaldson who is in advanced stage lung cancer, Deepak stumbles onto a way that he can use his medical know-how to help people in need. But Deepak living the Canadian dream, with Natalie if she'll have him, is not a bump-free road as he has to deal with Canadian laws and regulations, and as Natalie's ex-boyfriend, Colin Hill, a lawyer himself who is making a run for mayor in the upcoming election, has ulterior motives in not seeing a Natalie-Deepak happy ending.—Huggo
- An Indian doctor Deepak Chopra (Vinay Virmani) emigrates to Canada in the hope of starting a new life. Deepak's wife Nellie had advised against leaving the country to serve people in a different nation, but Deepak argues that serving people is the same all over the world. In Toronto, Deepak stays with his Mama Vijay (Rizwan Manji) & his own mother Nellie (Lillete Dubey). Vijay's wife is a Canadian hottie named Rani (Mircea Monroe). Vijay runs an Indian restaurant in Toronto. Vijay has supported Deepak in his education in India and has now sponsored his visa in Canada.
Bureaucracy confines Deepak to life as a taxi driver in Canada. Deepak applies to every hospital in Canada but is asked to do medical school again in Canada, as his Indian degrees don't count. Despite Canada having a shortfall of 26,000 doctors, the country does not allow Deepak to practice medicine unless he studies medicine all over again in Canada. At best he is offered menial jobs in nursing or massage therapy. Deepak meets taxi driver Toni (Kunal Nayyar) while he was roaming aimlessly on the streets. Deepak and Toni become friends. To pay his way, Deepak starts waiting tables at his uncle's Indian restaurant. But soon, Deepak is disgruntled (when he is yelled at for small mistakes while serving customers) and gives it up. Toni convinces Deepak to become a cab driver, while he is waiting for his big break. Simone (Isabel Kaif) is Deepak's girlfriend. Pete (Stephen McHattie) owns the cab company who says that he employs more PhDs than Harvard. Pete reveals that he has lung cancer and chemotherapy did not work. So, he knows that he is not going to survive. Deepak moves in with Toni.
Deepak starts by listening to the ailments of his cab passengers and offering him helpful advice about what to get checked and so on. After delivering a baby in his cab for passenger Natalie Wilman (Adrianne Palicki) (It was raining, and the streets were jammed with traffic so getting to the hospital was impossible). Deepak delivers the baby in the back of his cab and also revives the baby as it was not breathing right after birth. The video made by Toni of the incident goes viral on you tube & gets instant fame for Deepak. Deepak helps name the baby Ganesh when he visits Natalie at the hospital.
Deepak starts treating other passengers and practicing medicine illegally. Deepak also falls in love with Natalie, and she uses her training as a (non-practicing) lawyer to help him achieve his dreams. Nellie is happy that Deepak is now in love.
Pete's business has gone up due to Deepak and he appreciates Deepak by getting him custom plates "Dr Cabbie". Deepak saves many lives by directing them the right way. Deepak is able to prescribe medicines by ordering them from online pharmacies. With time, he has files on all his regular patients, provide them with refills of their medicines, and is even able to perform minor tests like sonograms in the back of his car.
Natalie reveals that the boy's dad is Colin (Chris Diamantopoulos), son of a prominent politician and aspirant to the post of Toronto's mayor. Natalie was a fling to Colin. Natalie was a young lawyer who thought Colin had everything: looks, career and charisma. Colin had sex with Natalie for a week and then stopped calling. When Natalie told him she was pregnant, he asked whose baby it was. Thus, Natalie killed her own career due to Colin and started working as a waitress at a coffee place. Colin's father wants him to improve his PR image by reaching out to Natalie as it was widely reported in the papers that Colin's baby was delivered in the back of a city cab. Deepak brings Natalie (along with Ganesh) home to meet his family. They all want to know if Natalie and Deepak are getting married, but perhaps Natalie is not there just yet.
Colin again starts to prey on Natalie's vulnerability to get close to her. Natalie sees that when secretly clicked pictures of Colin with the baby arrive in the papers. Natalie kisses Deepak on his birthday. But then Deepak is arrested for practicing illegal medicine.
It turns out that the arrest has been orchestrated by Colin to unnerve Natalie. Natalie, being a lawyer herself, decides to fight Deepak's case in Court.
Natalie's witnesses are all of Deepak's patients who testify that Deepak's timely intervention saved their lives. Deepak is found not guilty of impersonating a doctor, but guilty of giving controlled drugs without license. Prosecution asks for deportation, so Natalie marries Deepak, to make him a citizen and block his deportation. Deepak gets 500 hours of community service as punishment.
2 years later, Deepak is a certified doctor and Natalie is pregnant with his child.
