As Black Mask opens, a series of distorted images edited together in rapide fire MTV music video style is accompanied by a narrator explaining that a short while ago the Chinese government invested heavily in the creation of a squad of super soldiers named the 701st. The experiment proved disastrous however as it ended up producing super thugs rather than super heroes for the most part. Tsui Chik (Jet Li) was one such bio-engineered soldier who made it out alive when the state opted to liquidate its failed crop. Tsui keeps to himself mostly, working as a librarian and playing chess with his only friend, police inspector Shek Wai-Ho (Ching Wan Lau). When Hong Kong’s mob leaders are murdered in increasingly gruesome fashion in a series of elaborate attacks, Tsui finds himself thrust into action as his super hero...

November 8th marked the kickoff of the Urban Action Showcase weekend in New York City. It was presented by Mr. Demetrius Angelo of Asc Productions. The event was to be a celebration of action and martial arts film for all people of color, as well as a celebration of diversity in film-making, and it delivered. The main exhibition was hosted at the New York Hilton and peripheral events were at the HBO building, and AMC’s Times Square Theater.
In attendance were some of the best in the business. Most notably Michael Jai White, of “Spawn”, new wave cult classic “Black Dynamite”, and “Blood And Bone” along with Kelly Hu, the two currently star on the WB’s “Arrow” as Bronze Tiger and China White respectively. You’ve seen numerous trailers for Woo-Suk Kang’s South Korean brawler “Fists of Legends” (note the extra “s” in the “Fist” in the title — I suspect that’s to differentiate it from the Jet Li movie “Fist of Legend” in the States), but this is the first trailer with English subtitles. It’s kind of hard to know what the hell is happening in the film when you can’t speak the language. This new trailer, though, fills all that in. So what I get is that “Fists of Legend” is kind of like “Warrior”, but instead of brothers, the brawlers are ex-high school buddies. Sounds fun! On a television show billed as “the greatest fight show on Earth,” eager amateurs with lots to prove boldly step into the ring and expect to leave bloody but victorious.
