Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have mastered the art of the 8 out of 10 genre movie. No one in the world is making better 8 out of 10 horror and science fiction films. And their latest movie, the claustrophobic religious thriller "Heretic" is a 10 out of 10 in the category of 8 out of 10 horror movies. I know this sounds like a lunatic thing to say, but 60% of the time, it works every time.
"Heretic" continues the trend of Beck and Woods being two extremely talented movie dorks who read the room and know exactly what the audience wants, even if they don't know they want it yet. "Haunt" is a modern gem that will only accrue a powerful cult following as the years go by, the Adam Driver-versus-dinosaurs survival adventure "65" is one of the most unjustly overlooked blockbusters of the past few years, and now "Heretic" is an A24 horror movie that has...

Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are on quite the creative tear right now. While the writer/director pair had already helmed a few indie horror films, things really lit up for them upon the release of 2018’s “A Quiet Place,” a script they wrote that John Krasinski turned into a massive hit. This gave their career an extra boost, and they’ve directed two features since.

You’ve heard of “faith-based movies”? Well, “Heretic” is essentially the opposite. In A24’s thorny, impossible-to-anticipate thriller, co-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (best known as the writers of “A Quiet Place”) ask audiences to accept Hugh Grant as a demented religious scholar so extreme, he’s arranged to trap two Mormon missionaries in his house and torment them into rejecting their faith in Joseph Smith and all his teachings.
The lesson this sicko has planned is to Bible study what “Saw” is to shop class. But this is Hugh Grant we’re talking about. When his character, the innocuously sweater-clad and bespectacled Mr. Reed, answers the door, the young women have no reason to question his motives, or his generous offer of fresh-baked blueberry pie.
These two proselytizers have come selling salvation. Beck and Woods are selling something else — namely, suspense — counting on Grant’s radically against-type turn...

Writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s Heretic suggests a Saw film with a cheeky religious twist. In this case, the twisted Jigsaw-like sadist behind the pitiless battle of wills is Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), a mysterious atheist who lives in a small ornate rural home that will serve as the playing field, while the participants, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), are young Latter-day Saint missionaries going door-to-door selling the word of God. While the mind game that follows may not involve elaborate torture mechanisms and extreme bloodletting, the girls will still be forced to make a series of fraught decisions as part of a perverse inquisition designed to break down their faith.
The young Mormons arrive on Mr. Reed’s doorstep at the onset of a sudden downpour, aptly setting the stage for what’s to come. A little kooky but seemingly benign and expressing...

Hugh Grant credits “Cloud Atlas” for putting his world back on track. The actor told Vanity Fair that before starring in the 2012 film from the Wachowski siblings, his career had hit a wall.
“I was completely marooned,” Grant said of his career after box-office flop “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” in 2009. “The Wachowskis offered me just a few small little parts in ‘Cloud Atlas,’ and to be honest, I was probably only offered that because some of their international distributors had said, ‘We need some more recognizable names. Cram someone recognizable in here.'”
Grant continued, “They would’ve thought, ‘Oh, we don’t really want Hugh Grant, but we’ll give him some tiny parts.’ They will deny that but I think it’s partly what happened.”
Tiny parts, maybe, but not a tiny workload: Grant played six different roles in the sweeping novel adaptation, including one that...

The most compelling moments in Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ mostly sharp religious horror Heretic involve Mr. Reed, a cerebral theologian played with reptilian persuasiveness by Hugh Grant, intellectually sparring with two young Mormon evangelists. Grant, whose eager eyes and puckish smile wooed Renée Zellweger’s Bridget Jones and Julia Roberts’ Anna Scott (Notting Hill), uses his signature charm here to test the bounds of these junior missionaries’ beliefs. He imbues his character, a sinister recluse, with a well-intentioned disposition that soon reveals itself to be an unsettling trap. Heretic, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before it hits theaters November 15, sells Grant as a convincing villain and makes you wonder why he hasn’t played more of them.

Hugh Grant has been doing a lot to dismantle his dashingly disheveled ’90s rom-com image in the past 15 years or more, but Heretic might be the film to blow it all to kingdom come. Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, a key part of the creative team behind the thoughtfully unnerving A Quiet Place franchise, Heretic is a genuinely different kind of horror, one that uses conventions from all across the genre — from the old dark house movie to the straight-up slasher flick — and puts them in the service of a playful script that makes some seriously subversive comments about the world today.

Suspense and horror films typically get second-class treatment at fall film festivals, often relegated to midnight slots and left out of award season conversations. But this year, three Toronto fest entries — Focus Features’ papal conspiracy thriller “Conclave,” Mubi’s gory horror film “The Substance” and A24’s horror-thriller “Heretic” — may prove to be exceptions to the rule.
“I really wanted to straddle a line and have [“Conclave”] appeal to a large audience with its thriller elements, but also make it a cinematic experience that satisfies an adult, more discerning viewership at festivals,” says director Edward Berger, whose war drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” won four Oscars in 2023.
“Conclave” was inspired by films like “Klute,” “All the President’s Men” and other ‘70s paranoid thrillers. “The film is really an amalgamation of two genres: it’s a thriller, but also a very strong character [study] of its hero, Cardinal Lawrence [nm0000146 autoRalph...

Missionary work has always fascinated me. Not when it’s performed abroad as a means of indoctrinating people who might otherwise be unaware. I mean here, in America, where anyone fascinated with religion could simply walk up to a church, synagogue, or mosque and ask to learn. Yes, there’s a degree of marketing at play and companies have advertising budgets to spend in ways that also serve their flock by providing them a façade of purpose, but to have a door opened with a resident genuinely saying “you’ve converted me” is insane. It happens, though. People are impressionable. People are lonely.
That’s where Scott Beck and Bryan Woods leave us at the start of Heretic. With the question of which describes Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) best. Because he did request information. The Church of Latter Day Saints wouldn’t have sent Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister...

Hugh Grant proclaims near the beginning of A24’s “Heretic” that there is only one true religion, and it isn’t Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. By the end, he does reveal his pick, though your mileage may vary. Some viewers might have an epiphany; some will shrug with indifference. Whatever the response, the journey to that point is compelling—a miracle because “Heretic,” despite its marketing, is primarily a drama of ideas—at least in intent.

Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have primarily written studio horror fare, like A Quiet Place and The Boogeyman, so their return to the indie sphere with A24’s Heretic was undoubtedly going to be met with skepticism. Although it’s not a great genre flick, it’s made enjoyable by a strong performance by Hugh Grant and some excellent crafts.
Heretic Review RELATEDSharp Corner TIFF Review — Ben Foster Strong in Underdeveloped, Overlong Thriller
Heretic follows two Mormon missionaries who, while visiting a strange man’s house, discover that he harbors a disturbing worldview, kicking off a dangerous game of theological cat-and-mouse. This is teased as a twisty horror-thriller, and while there are attempts to subvert the audience’s expectations, the plot beats are rarely as subversive or shocking as the filmmakers so clearly believe.

“We are negotiating a transaction of ideologies.”
Writing and directing duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (“A Quiet Place”) have done their research when it comes to questioning ancient philosophers and the religions of the world. Perfecting ominous dialogue can often be critical in a psychological horror film like their newest, “Heretic,” which involves religious thought as no other project has since “The Exorcist.” The William Friedkin masterpiece might have once been considered the standard-bearer for uniquely blending religion and horror, but Beck and Woods have redefined the genre with a lot of help from their witty words spoken by a devastatingly sharp Hugh Grant.
“Heretic” also stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, young Mormon missionaries tasked with spreading the word of the church to convert the people in a given region to their religion. A single-minded religious horror movie that strains to be shocking but refuses to offend, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ “Heretic” leaves itself with no other option but to have some cheeky fun at God’s expense. That proves easy enough for this chatty little chamber piece, as one of the story’s three main roles is a sadistic theologian played by Hugh Grant, who’s having the time of his life in a spirited performance that feels like a cross between “Paddington 2” baddie Phoenix Buchanan and real-world nuisance Bill Maher. “Heretic” may not be serious-minded enough to shake (or reaffirm) anyone’s faith, but it’s rare to experience a sermon of any kind delivered with such panache — and not only because Grant’s character sings Radiohead and impersonates Jar Jar Binks as part of his effort to prove that all of the world’s religions have gotten it wrong.

It turns out that the effervescent but neurotic wit and charm that made Hugh Grant an enduring romantic lead actor translates quite well to horror. His disarming villain, an impish type who delights in psychological and theological warfare, elevates Heretic, the latest from A24 and writer/director duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The self-contained chamber piece gets hung up in its basic lecture on religion, but the smart casting, powerhouse performances, and an infectious sense of humor ensure that it remains engaging.
Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes (The Boogeyman‘s Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) ponder typical teenage things, like condom sizes or whether they fit in with their peers, before they continue to work their way down the assigned list of potential converts. That brings them to the door of Mr. Reed (Grant), a warm, neighborly type who invites the pair inside just as a storm arrives.

Heretic presents an intriguing puzzle that will spark thoughtful discussion. Sisters Barnes and Paxton are Mormon missionaries who find themselves in a troubling situation after knocking on Hugh Grant’s door during a rainstorm. While he seems pleasant at first, offering them shelter, it becomes clear Mr. Reed has other plans that threaten not just their safety but their deeply held beliefs.
This thriller premiered at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, produced by A24. The studio is known for backing challenging genre films, and writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also penned A Quiet Place, give religion an unsettling twist. Reed subjects the sisters to a strange interrogation, questioning their faith through lively but disturbing debates. Grant astounds in his departure from typical romantic roles into this disturbing and hypnotic performance.

Plot: Two Mormons (Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher) on a mission knock on the wrong door and find themselves fighting for their lives, faith, and sanity.
Review: Heretic is the latest horror flick from A24, and like many of their genre efforts, it’s a provocative one. Questions of theology and faith are always timely, and much of this diabolical and impressively harsh horror film deals with whether or not – in the face of great conflict – you can maintain your faith or be swayed by both the desire to save your own life and the evidence you’re being presented with.
In this, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) are young Mormons fulfilling their duties as missionaries by essentially going door-to-door to try to convert people to their faith. Neither is a particular stickler for Mormon theology, with the movie opening with them discussing pornography and condoms,...

As the Toronto International Film Festival gets underway, The Hollywood Reporter’s critics weigh in on this year’s crop of titles, from biopics to documentaries, sweeping epics to intimate character studies, tear-jerking dramas to laugh-out-loud comedies.
Several of this year’s slate have already debuted at other festivals throughout the year. For those curious about the very best the TIFF calendar has to offer, a few — but not nearly all — of the highlights include the Steven Soderbergh ghost story Presence, which David Rooney hailed as “masterfully done” out of Sundance; the Icelandic grief drama When the Light Breaks, which Lovia Gyarkye described as “impossible to shake” at Cannes; and the literary adaptation Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, which Caryn James praised at Telluride for the “astonishing” child performance at its center.

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and that can only mean one thing – it’s TIFF time, baby! Once again, I’ll be attending the Toronto International Film Festival on behalf of JoBlo.com. I’m looking forward to getting an early look at some of the prestigious awards fare we’ll all be hearing plenty about in the coming months. Crazy enough, this will be my sixteenth year in a row covering the festival!
Here’s what I’m most excited to check out at this year’s edition:
Conclave:
Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 edition of TIFF, as that new adaptation of the classic novel/ film proved to be one of the most dazzling war films in recent memory. It's honestly almost impossible to imagine anyone besides Mads Mikkelsen portraying Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the cult NBC series "Hannibal," as the Danish actor fully embodies the show's version of the character. He is Hannibal Lecter, at least onscreen: a Machiavellian manipulator with an obscene wealth of knowledge, an impeccable sense of style, and a tendency toward eating people. His chemistry with his co-stars is undeniable, especially with Hugh Dancy, who plays empath and criminal profiler Will Graham. But back when NBC and series creator Bryan Fuller were first developing the show, they floated some very different actors before finally deciding on the magnificent Mikkelsen.
Fuller has revealed in interviews that he had to fight a bit to get Mikkelsen cast, because the network wanted someone "more mainstream" than the man mostly known to American audiences as the bloody-teared villain Le Chiffre from "Casino Royale." Thankfully he got his way...

You might know Raven Software from the Call of Duty (Cod) franchise. The studio once thrived as a creator of distinct and highly regarded games such as Singularity, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and the Heretic-Hexen Trilogy. The studio has since become a support studio primarily focused on the yearly Call of Duty titles.
Many games and developers have come and gone throughout the history of gaming but fans remember Raven. Many on social media and Reddit have expressed sorrow over the studio’s shift from their original titles to the annual blockbuster series.
How Raven Software Went From Making Cult Classics to Cod
Raven Software was founded in 1990 and quickly made a name for itself from its creativity. The studio was known for its unique games that explored new concepts and pushed the boundaries of whatever genre they tackled at the time. Titles like Hexen, Heretic, and Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast became favorites for gamers.

Veteran producer Stacey Sher still has love for critically-maligned “Poolman” directed by Chris Pine.
“It’s a gorgeous film. Chris made the movie he set out to make. He believed in it and I believed in Chris. I still do. He’s a really gifted filmmaker.”
Following its Toronto premiere, Pine’s film became one of the worst-reviewed titles last year, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it “not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out.”
But Sher believes you have to always support your director.
“Yes – if you believe in that person. Quentin Tarantino may have said that to me a long time ago: ‘The reviews of your movies aren’t written the weekend they come out. They are written 10, 20, 30 years after they come out. It’s all about how they endure.

Few filmmakers can claim to have helped shape an entire era of cinema, but the boom in 1990s indie cinema is impossible to imagine without producer Stacey Sher.
“If you say, U.S. independent cinema of the ’90s, whatever film touched your feelings, your emotions and your memory, most probably, it has Stacey involved in it,” says Locarno film festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, on the reason Locarno is honoring Sher with its 2024 Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, or best independent producer, award.
After a six-year mentorship under legendary producers Deborah Hill and Linda Obst, making such films as Chris Columbus’ debut Adventures in Babysitting and Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King, Sher joined the Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg’s newly-founded indie shingle Jersey Films, soon becoming a partner. At Jersey, she was instrumental in championing a new generation of directors — Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Andrew Niccol, Ben Stiller — whose films would define a decade.

Updated with new release date: Sony said Tuesday that it will now open Miramax’s Here, the reteam of Forrest Gump filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and its stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, on November 1. It’s the only studio theatrical release going wide on that day after Samuel Goldwyn’s Liam Neeson title Absolution, Viva’s animated Hitpig and the George Huang-directed Luke Evans movie Weekend in Taipei. There’s been no buzz that Here will land a place at the fall’s film festival troika of Toronto, Venice and Telluride.
Previously, June 21: Sony said Friday that its new film Here, reuniting the director, writer, and stars of the classic Forrest Gump, will open wide via TriStar Pictures on November 15.
Previously, the film had been scheduled for an exclusive run in Los Angeles in New York on that date, with a limited and wide release to follow on November 22 and November 27, respectively.
